The Zf has been a massive win for me. Such a bloody good camera.
The best thing about adapting older lenses or manual focus lenses is the subject/eye tracking while in manual focus and the ability to punch in for focus on the Zf!
YES...forgot to mention that..
@@ogonzillacan you try Sony/Sigma E lenses with aperture ring? If you have smart E to Z adapter.
Hello! I have a question. can this camera record 4k 60 externally? For redundancy atomos ninja v?
I think Nikon’s system regarding the shooting style and dials is actually extremely smart. It allows you to switch between modes super fast without having to tweak every dials each time.
Saves you a LOT of time and makes user experience much smoother.
Well done Nikon !
As a Fuji user who recently switched to Nikon, this camera is really intriguing.
Z8 for wildlife and Zf for Macro and basically everything else, where the huge Z8 would be out of place.
Cameras like the Zf are why my love affair with Nikon has endured for more than 40 years, bless Nikon for giving us what we want.
the Zf is fantastic, the subject detection with manual lenses is so good. as somebody who repair lenses, this is something that helps give me more enjoyment out of my adapted lenses from moree than 50 years ago.
No one talks about being able to flip and hide the screen. I find this very appealing
Fair point but that's probably because it's a feature that has been around for many years. I remember having it on my D5100 and it wasn't a new feature then either.
It's my favorite thing about the fully articulating screen lol
I do too.
It's great if you like fully articulang screens, saves battery and protects the screen but I have moved on to tilting screens, suits me better because I mostly do photography.@@just_A_Hack
Would be more effective if it had a joystick…..
Congrats, I pre-ordered mine but still didn't get a chance to pick it up yet as I opted for in-store collection. I live using this exactly as you mentioned, with the screen tucked in. However, if you miss the joystick, you can always map the rear screen to move focus points, which is terribly useful. You'll just end up with a lot of fingerprints! Enjoy!
I just love that Nikon went with the magnesium adamentium vibraneum alloy for the top plate, it really gives this camera a beautiful feel to it
Hey Omar, thanks for all the comparisons. I'm a fuji shooter (X-Pro 2), but the Zf is definitely on my shortlist. It's the Fuji XT but with Full Frame. Just wish the lenses had a shutter dial. But a few of the Voigtlander lenses look very good with this.
You might be able to map the focus ring to be a shutter dial or other kind of dial. I haven't tried, but it might be possible.
You can use smart E to Z adapter and use Sony/Sigma E lenses with aperture ring. I think that’s a better choices than using adapting F lenses. Hopefully soon Sigma will release more Z mount lenses.
I think Fujifilm perfected the manual controls for that ''retro'' feel. Very intuitive, very efficient. That being said, this new Nikon Zf is just beautiful.
The controls of this camera seem to offer Fujifilm-like dials but with a bridge so that people used to PASM aren't alienated.
Of course Nikon perfected the actual manual controls on SLRs back in the 60s and 70s. But I actually think Olympus did it better with the OM series by having the shutter speed dial around the lens mount - it’s brilliant you literally do not have to take the camera away from your eye to manually adjust SS.
After using an XPro1 since release, and the Df ( and D200, D3s, and now a Z6ii) I have to say I like how their controls work on (d)slrs, but the Fuji auto modes interface with the retro style is more intuitive. To me. But, I do LOVE my non-retro styled Nikons. It’s too easy to make them lie to you with the retro interface/dials.
I fear this might be the end of Fuji :(
@@bLaffixI hope not. I'm still waiting for the X-T30 mk. III 😀
I could not resist so I have just placed a pre-order with the best Nikon dealer here in London for a Nikon Zf. I will not be getting rid of any of my Fuji kit but it is nice to be adding to my older Nikon gear of SLR and DSLR cameras. (Edit 2 weeks later) I have now picked up two Zf cameras and just starting to get to grips with how to use them. So far I am really impressed and very happy with my purchases.
Omar, Nice quick overview. I've recently made the 100% switch from Canon to Nikon. Have had the Z50 and multiple DX lenses, several Z FF lenses, briefly owned a Z6ii, and expected I'd be great with a ZF. Looked forward to the flippy screen and better IBIS. Loved the Z6ii files when i had one earlier. Put my pre-order in the first morning it was announced. Ten days ago our regional Nikon sales rep was at an area dealer with the camera so I went to check it out. While I would have preferred a Z6iii, given we'll have a longer wait for that, I was prepared to go with the ZF. I didn't expect to have issues with the ZF's ergos. (I've owned a number of Fujis and was good with those.) But when I actually laid hands on it, I was surprised at how negative a reaction to its body shape I had. It does feel very solid. But it is VERY hard to hold comfortably, even with the SmallRig accessory grip it still feels like it might slip from your hand. You feel the need to cradle it in your left hand, or you end up really squeezing it with your right hand. Contributing to the problem is that the leatherette covering is not the usual grippy material, but some slippery, more plasticky feeling material. The lack of any sort of bumper or edge on the back (to help cradle your thumb) is also really missed. Sooo, I cancelled my pre-order. Not sure what I'll get...buy a used Z6ii, or wait for the Z6iii? Moral of the story - Get your hands on one before buying from a place you can't return it to.
Mine arrives next week! Can't wait. Thanks for the excellent preview and comparisons. My intro to mirrorless was Fuji X-Pro2 (which made nice photos but didn't ultimately live up to expectations). I now have 2 Z6s, a Z8 and Z9. The Zf will be my "every day" camera. Have a Z 40mm f/2.0 waiting to, er, hook up.
Please Omar don’t you ever stop making videos. I just love how you do these rundowns!
Outside of the Nikon 26mm, 28mm, 40mm. Manual lenses to keep the size down is what I will be looking for.
The way you look genuinely happy just gets me. ❤
Hey Omar, on the ZF you have an option to use part of the screen as a joystick, it may not be as great as a true joystick ( especialy if you use you camera screen closed ^^ ) but it's still a nice thing to have.
Mine is arriving today in Moss Green! Love my X-T5 but excited to see which one continues to be my daily carry street camera. Z8 already replaced my Fuji for weddings and events due to dynamic range, low light performance, af, and depth of field. I love Fujifilm, but it's hard not to love these new Nikons too!
Send me a photo on instagram!! Love to see it in that color. @ogonzilla
I looove that they offer different colors. More manufacturers should bring that option back for their cameras. I have the burnt orange coming in today.
@@ogonzilla will do!!!
With Nikon cameras, all the buttons have a different feel. Take the Z6ii and look at the top. The ISO and Movie button all have a different pitch, and even the area around the button. This is something I’ve always loved about Nikon cameras, the little little details.
True true...but why the bottom right only? lol
@@ogonzilla 🤣
I bought a Nikon Df when it came out back in the day and I loved that camera. It's taken a decade to get another one that follows in it's footsteps. If I was still in the Nikon universe, I'd certainly be interested to get one...
I bet the Z mount Voightlander lenses would go very well with this camera. The 35 and 50 F2 APOs are awesome. I'd like to try the 40mm f1.2
Awesome camera!
I got my Df earlier today, play with it a few hours. My initial impression is it feels like a mirrorless camera in DSLR body. It’s hefty and the shutter sound is almost the same as Df and the focus is fantastic. Only wish it has a Z8 screen (I’m photo only).
Awesome, I can't wait for mine to get here! It appears the influencers are first in line to receive it. I look forward to your reviews!
What a fantastic way to explain the iso of this camera. Others have attempted. No one is even close to your understanding. Bravo brother. My therapy session for this week is complete. I feel rejuvenated. Still waiting for the damn camera to arrive.
I had a black FE2 back in the day. I adored that camera. 😍 The Zf looks like good mirrorless bang-for-buck from Nikon (at last!)
This is what I have been waiting for!! Hope you are well Omar!
Other than the Z8, this is the only Nikon camera since they went mirrorless that has tempted me. The price is stellar for what you get also. The lenses are the main thing holding me back. (that and I don't neeeed the camera)
I had my hands on this camera in a store yesterday & I couldn't quickly figure out how the ISO dial works. There's a "C" setting that I heard someone call "Control," that I was hoping to map to Auto (like you show in the Fuji system), but the camera had an internal auto-iso setting ... & if that was set, nothing you set the dial to did anything, even C. Pretty confused, could d/l & read the manual, but imo it's pretty crazy confusing coming to it from a Z6. I tooootally agree with you abt the shutter speed dial in A mode, I'm getting older & forget stuff, that would drive me bonkers. I also don't love the 1/3 shutter spot, since I prefer adjusting in 1/2 stop increments on my Z6. Actually, I wish you could set it to full stop increments, so it better matched things during the film days & you could move quickly. I thought I was going to love & buy this camera, but somehow they messed up the controls so much it's 100% a deal-breaker for me. Why couldn't they just copy Fuji. Maybe next time, sigh.
Mine was delivered yesterday. Looking forward to using it.
Enjoy!
Great video! Cant wait to get mine. Shipping date in japan is in the 27th with some freebies and I also ordered the Japan exclusive nikon grip. I prefer it over the smallrig grip for the zf.
What site did you order the grip from?
@@DJKISSchitown I live in Japan so I ordered it from official Nikon japan website. Yodobashi camera also have a preorder open right now.
Well, the excitement of unboxing a new camera gets old as soon as you finish opening it, doesn't it? 😆 That's why we get GAS! It still a good feeling...thanks for sharing Omar!
Better looking than any of those Fuji ones. Thanks Nikon
OH boy I really really reaaaaallllyyy need one. What a great piece of tech. Love it!
That Jared cameo was beautiful.
Most beautiful camera of digital era.
Looks nice. However, I would get the Voigtlander 35mm Z-Mount lens. It is manual focus only, but I would prefer the whole retro vintage look.
One of the best videos on the Zf that I have viewed. And I really all the closeups of the function dials. I did notice on my Z5's that the lower button on the back is also lower than the other three. I don't care for the battery compartment and memory card slot combined and on the bottom. Nikon does that with the Z50 and it's the only thing I dislike about my Z50 and Z30. I like the Z5 having dual card slots, although I really haven't had a true need for it for my work. Your comment about lenses compared to the Fuji - I have the 28mm, 40mm full frame compact Z lenses. I also had the 24-50z. Although they are not "pro" version lenses, they are sharp and compact - and reasonably priced! Again great video, but will I buy one - No. My Z5's do me right.
In Europe you will get a Grip with the Nikon Zf…. Mine will come today! 😍
A totally different review, like an ergonomic review. Very important because it complements the rest of the videos. We seldom see a video like this one with good production, including audio. As I said it's not better than Matt Granger's preview with a photoshoot, AF comparison etc, it's complementary.
Omar, I love your reviews. You cover the feel of the camera uniquely. Well worth the watch.
First content creator who knows how to zoom and focus
The pasm control works the same on the older film cameras. It’s easier for me. I’m going to order one.
The RAW files will carry the B&W profile that you select with them and you have your RAW processor honor the camera profiles, you get a B&W RAW file that you can change back to color. It’s a wonderful thing.
I have my Adobe products set to use the Camera's profiles by default instead of their profiles. It works great.
It’s brilliant, love it so far, plus it arrived day after release no 3 month wait
Excellent video, Omar. Thank you for this. It was the review that best helped me when choosing a new camera. Hugs from Brazil.
Very good Omar , really enjoyed your look at the ZF.
Fantastic video! Can't wait to see more about Nikon Zf on you channel :D
Maybe you could make a comparison between X-T5 and Zf in which you'd try to get make both cameras shoot like film cameras? I know that a lot is up to post-processing in Lightroom (or any other tool), but it could be super interesting to see which one gives better results.
I'm dying to get a retro look like camera and the only thing that is getting me alway from fuiji is the APS-C sensor. Maybe I'm wrong, but I do love FF cameras. This Nikon is going to be my next one, for sure.
ISO PERFORMANCE on the Zf is stellar ❤😊❤❤❤
Nice overview, Omar. Glad you pronounced it “Zed F”. You made us Canadians happy. 😊 Seriously, one of the other strengths of the Zf is the 2.2” LCD screen, especially since there is no joystick. I’ve gotten so used to the 2.2” screen on my Z7ii that it is really hard for me for work with a camera that has a smaller screen now. Once you buy one and get the SmallRig grip, I’d love to see a size comparison with your Z8. My Z7ii with the SmallRig grip is actually pretty close to Z8 dimensions and I guess the Zf might be as well once the grip is added.
There seems to be a bug at 14:28: Zf can shoot 420 10bit instead of 422 10bit. This camera is selling like crazy in China. I've been waiting in line for half a month since I ordered it.
It's popular everywhere. I heard it's out of stock in US as well.
Cool first look - looking forward to examples of the photo's you take with it !
This camera would be perfect if the back was the same as the Fuji XT cameras. I just hope 1 day they add a customizable d-pad, joystick and non flippy screen, everything else is perfect!! And also their own film simulations like Fuji
Thanks Omar for another great video. I'm an amateur who shoots mainly my family and travel. I previously shot lots of landscape and nature with a D750. I have the XT5,X100V and XT3. I was thinking about selling the latter 2 and getting aZ8 or used GFX 100s for landscape, nature etc. Now that the Zf is outI'll have to consider it. Any thoughts?
Considering parity between my Nikon FA and this, the mode selections work exactly the same, which I like
Agree the micro SD card should stay in there. A good move by Nikon. I would treat the micro SD card as something like internal storage for the camera.
I think this will be my first camera in the Z system. Coming form a D850 though which still does everything I want it to do. I wonder when will Nikon put the 45mp Z8 sensor in this beauty.
The best thing about this video? apart from Omar, obviously. The shout out to Flossy Carter! 😂😂 Absolutely brilliant! As you got half way through the catch phrase, I was thinking, "hang on a minute". Loved it. Who knew you watched Floss and White Shoes? My respect for you rose by at least 2% after that!
Omar, I'm seriously considering getting the Nikon Zf. This first impressions video was immensely helpful. Especially the parts about the physical feel and buttons. I would have never thought of the shooting modes and how they relate to the dials. I've never shot Fujifilm so I don't have that frame of reference that you brought forward. Well done!
get the Zf, it is really good
@@richardhaw9757 I’m already a Nikon shooter with a good range of quality lenses for my Z5, so I’ve been waiting for a Z camera that would be a big enough jump for me up (I’m a non-professional who does street, theatre, travel, and headshot/portrait/publicity photography). Between the more tactile form factor, the flip screen on the full body camera, and better autofocus this may be the one!
@@GeoChild that flippy screen is helpful for street
This is the review I’ve been waiting for! Omar on the Zf.
Finally!! I've been waiting for this!!
So glad Nikon built this as a solid, real camera. In anticipation of the ZF release, I only just recently checked out the ZFC in a store. I was totally shocked, I had to check a number of times that it wasn't a plastic toy replica just for display.
Would love to see this in different colors.
Me gusta tambien hacer retratos. Y me gusta viajar.
Great video Omar. I have seen so many review videos on this camera and your video is the best. Thanks
I am Oly shooter and love my m43 set but this brings back my Nikon shooting days back.
I kinda agree on the feel of lesser robust build quality on the Zfc. I also own the Z9. Actually I never take photos with the Zfc. I have a tan leather case on it and leather camera strap so I just carry it on my shoulder cuz I look so cool. I heard passerby say "look at that guy Bill, he looks so cool especially with that retro camera with the leather, must be expensive!!" so you see you don't need to be cool, just have to look cool. Thanks Omar
Wow thank you! Youre the only youtuber who asnwered my question about nikon and fuji 😂
I received mine yesterday. Battery had no charge. I kept pressing WB button because I was dying for a good hold for the body. Build quality is very good. I havent' figured out how to move focus point on touch screen while using EVF. Menu system is much better than my D850.
i hope you can create a full tutorial for this Nikon ZF.. im transition to Nikon.. but still keep my xt3.. for now..
The leatherette on the top prism section is exactly like the Nikon FE/FE2 which its design pays homage to and looks identical to. Nikon going "retro" of its own SLRs of the past would not have it any other way.
Also worth noting about build quality, the top dials are made of brass, so years down the line it will age beautifully, just like the FE did with it's brassiness when the paint wears down, another true retro nod to It's heritage.
Excellent video! We've been curious about this camera as it compares to our Fujifilm cameras and you answered all of our questions. Thanks!
I've been using the Canon 90 camera since 2019/20 and I gotta say this is the first camera for photography that im thinking about getting!
Nice Vid and honest feedback on the Zf!! But, Wow!! You have alot of brands you shoot with!!! Must get crazy at times with overlapping features, glass and accessories. I would love to see you do a video on which accessories have been your best and worst across the brands you shoot with.
Button in bottom right (outside) could be lower to allow for thumb to glide over it and press other buttons without pressing it.
I heard that my old AF-D lenses won't autofocus with the FTZ adapter, which is a bummer but I do love everything else I see about this camera. I think I'm gonna have to pull the trigger on this one as it seems destined to be a classic.
The wonderful sensor of the Z6II, combined with the Expeed 7 processor from the Z9/Z8, along with some new industry-first technologies...and all wrapped up in a well-designed retro body that apes the original Nikon FM/FE line of 35mm cameras? And real brass dials?
More strategies like this, please.
@@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas I think Omar probably just got the camera. Hopefully he'll come back with a more in-depth review that covers things like pixel-shift and the all-new Focus Point Sensor Stabilization.
I ordered zf with kit 28-75mm. waiting for delivery.
Really well done details on the unboxing- will use some of your links. Really close to entering back into the photo world after a 5 year break - still have all my FX lenses. 3:00
Beautiful cam! You make me dream Omar. But i can't afford it.
Another great video. I'm curious if you are going to do a video where you deep dive into your impressions of the image quality in real world use.
Thanks for always entertaining Omar 🙂
I think Nikon's next step is to make a Z1 or Z3 that's like the X-Pro series.... but FF.
I supposed for the rear LCD if you really felt like you had to, you could cut out part of a film package and tape it to the back of the LCD (like some people did with their film SLRs to remind them of what film was loaded (although doing so may make it harder to put the screen flat with the LCD facing you).
I would say that while the Zf has a smaller grip, I think Nikon made the right choice by making it smaller, and then letting the user add a third party grip (like the Smallrig grip) later, but not force people to have a specific grip (some may prefer little to no grip actually) so the idea that they made this a "choice" was probably a good one. I would probably get the Smallrig grip if I get a Zf for the times when I want to use larger lenses, although I never found the grip on the XT20/XT30 to be a problem with reasonably sized lenses (like the XF 55-200) when I had it. The only people that might find the small grip a problem would be people trying to carry around larger lenses by just the grip, in which cas iwould say you should be using a strap instead (like a Rapid strap or something that connects to the lens itself). There's also a thumb grip you can get that fits into the hotshoe, like you can get for some of the Fuji cameras.
I am a bit puzzled why Nikon didn't want t oput a joystick on the Zf. I know it was probably to keep it as retro as possible, but I think that would have been an acceptable departure (those who don't like to use it can just ignore it).
The ZF is the first Nikon camera with touch drag autofocus. (You can move the focus point by looking through the viewfinder and wiping your thumb along the display at the same time) I could imagine that you could possibly make very good use of this. So far I can't find anything about this in any review. (Has nobody discovered this yet?) I would be interested to know whether this feature is useful for you. (I was only able to try it out very briefly on a Canon camera. I found that you can move the focus point much faster than with the joystick, so I thought it was really cool. - But I don't have a Canon myself, I have everything from Nikon).
5:10 The continuity bothered me also on my black Zfc, but then I bought the original Nikon grip and it fixes it. So I will do the same with the Zf, will order the original grip. It also adds more protection to the bottom.
My Zf arrived today and wow am I impressed. I am still setting it up but it is a major step up from myz6 and Z6ii. I will wait and see what the Z6iii is like but it will have to be something special to talk me out of getting a secoond Zf.
Interesting to hear. As a ex Fuji owner I am drawn to the Zf. Have a Z8 and Z6II now. Was looking forward to the next Z6 but this could do it
@@tdalton854I was all set to buy the Z8 but this came out. I am torn about what I would use the Z8 for now. It would be a very expensive D500 replacement that I would use very rarely these days.
Working on a setup video... :) Enjoy!
Step up how for you?
@ogonzilla keep an eye out for the video settings. There are 3 that are set for "same as photo" or similar wording. There is colour balance, picture profile, and I can't remember the other one as I am not home with my camera. Straight Out Of Camera did a video about it and mine was the same.
Beautiful camera, just 3 things holding me back, Nikon needs a set of their own "Fujicrons" (F2, light, WR, metal with aperture rings), 24MP sensor means it has a AA filter which softens images a bit & finally I prefer the Fuji control scheme in terms of choosing what mode the camera is in. Hope Nikon keeps it up though! Great to see Fuji have some competition
I would say, f3.5 would be fine too if it can be very small. I think they will do that once they know that the camera is selling well.
they actually already have some of those lenses available, even without adapting to f mount. There is a 24mm, a 26mm, a 28mm, a 40mm and a 50mm in assorted apertures from 1.7 to 2.8.
@@olivertrees no they don't, the 28mm and 40mm are plastic, no aperture rings(a control ring does not count) and no weather sealing. The 26mm is good optically but again, not the type of lens I'm talking about
@@ufukkiblat sure, but I definitely think F2 or F2.8 is possible while keeping the lenses a reasonable size
@@CianMcsweeney I’m with you. Those plastic down to the mount Nikkors are an insult to Nikon’s legacy and its customers.
The slightly lower button on the bottom right side is an ergonomic feature, so when you hold the camera your palm will less likely to push on it.
Makes sense!!!
I have a z7ii and this is so TEMPTING just for the autofocus...should I do it? LOL I mainly shoot Portraits/events for my paid shoots..I DONT NEED IT I WANT IT UGH
Thanks Omar always a pleassure to watch your reviews !
Thanks Omar!
I got the XT3 and was looking for nikon’s bodies. Really helpfull.
And great camera!!
As a Fuji user, this is the first FF camera I feel tempted to buy... But the price, flippy screen, no aperture rings, the look of modern lenses on this old school looking body... It's hard to say no, but no... Nevertheless it is an absolute beauty!!!!
minor correction: the Nikon Z 40mm you mention is f/2.0 and not f/2.8
Not sure flossy says "stuff" though :D love that you watch him too!

Thumbs down because I have to wait at least two weeks until I‘ll receive my pre-order. Double thumbs up for putting the Fro in the Video 😂 Have fun with your Zf!
Regarding small lenses … I am going to adapt Voigtländer M-Mount Lenses on my Zf. And probably I‘ll have a look at the Techart AF Adapter. If this Adapter works, I‘ve found my dream combination.

Thanks for this video. Please do the detailed autofocus comparisons between your Z6 ll and ZF.
Omar, I was starting to hope you would never post a Zf video. Darn.
This is the only camera I'm interested in right now but it's so much pricier than any cameras I've bought previously. It's great that they've crammed it with tech, but the fact it's already in stock in the UK so soon after release makes me think it's quite a niche product that's not flying off the shelves yet...
Your feelings on that screen is one of the same reasons I like my xt-4 so much.

Good to have a video/stills switch but since we often don't use the same exposure settings at all while shooting video (shutter speed for instance), it won't help as much as it could. Defenitely a still camera, no hybrid.
@jorgepinogarciadelasbayonas Without custom modes such as "portaits" or "landscape" or anything, such video/stills selectors are better than nothing but they are quite crippled. When shooting portraits for instance, if you switch video/stills, you'll most likely change things which are otherwise physically dialed such as shutter speed or ISO or mode (from A to S or M typically).
1. The ''Flossy Carter"" shout-out was a surpirse.
2. My GAS is killing me.
Speaking of GAS, I have held one, I didn't like the way it felt but I still want one lol
