- In this video me and Marcus look at dead test number 2 in BS7671. In the test sequence this is "testing continuity of ring final circuit conductors, including protective conductors". We go through all 3 stages recording the results and we show the calculation for R1 + RN and R1 + R2 from r1, rn and r2 end to end readings. We prove the circuit is wired as a ring final circuit sometimes called a ring main or socket circuit. After proving the circuit is wired as a ring and the polarity of the sockets and record the results on the testing paperwork.
How to carry out a figure of 8 test on a ring final circuit (sometimes call a ring main circuit)

But is it permitted to wet those three heads with stuff to get good result?
Congratulations on 50k. Looking forward for much more videos
Thanks 🦾
Top video as always. Really appreciate the detail you put in guys. Excellent help
You have covered everything that a student would need to know thankyou.
Thanks 👍🏻
Such an informative video. Thanks guys. 👍🏾
amazing guys wish you best of luck i know your channel for some time and it is amazing you took this guy on and producing to me even better more clearer tutorials again keep on thanks for all your hard work

👍🏻
Hi Guys. Just wanted to say thanks very much for all the help your video tutorials have been. I am just after achieving my 2391 and your videos and explanations were a massive help to me. Thanks again and keep up the good work!!
That’s fantastic news Nigel and thanks for watching 👍🏻. All the best Gaz
thanks for showing the test sheet and filling that
👍
What a video. Excellent detail, I’m also an adult learner and this is Really really helpful! Thank you 😃
Thanks David 👍
Thanks for clarifying step1 relating to results being within .5 and not on the value of r1 + r2. 👍👍👍
Also congratulations on 50k subscribers. Will be 100k in no time.
I have my final exam tomorrow and I had no idea how to do the testing, now I do thanks so much
👍🏻… all the best
Thanks for sharing it with us
Congratulations on over 50k subscribers👍
Thanks 🦾
Fair play to Marcus, fair play to him
👍🏻
I like the way you connected line and neutral alternately. Replicates the normal flow of current in alternate directions
Great content guys keep it going 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks 👍🏻
Very good. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for the support 👍🏻
You should make an in depth video on IR testing showing the type of faults that throw up bad readings their doesnt seem to be any on youtube.
I have a rig for that just need time to get round to making the video 🦾. Gaz
Great content.
Where can I get a replacement motherboard for a megga insulation resistance tester? Where do they sell replacement parts?
Thank you ❤️
Very interesting work your doing. I’m in Canada and wow its very different here. Same but very, very different.
U guys are amazing thanks a lot
Thanks 👍🏻
Great videos garry but can you please do video explaining types of tests and what it means to the circuit. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Great video. Thanks
Thanks 👍🏻
Love the content gents! Quick question this is under unit 204 level 2 but in this video Gaz mentioned it's for level 3....
Is that contact cleaner the stuff that Halfords sell for use in vehicle engine electrics?
Thanks, good video
Thanks for watching
Great video . Hope thats not a euphemism "marcus gone to take kids swimming"
😂😂😂
Hi,
A few (maybe silly) questions please as I've never done testing before, just learning now.
- Do I need to disconnect everything from the sockets before testing?
- Do I need to switch ON or OFF the sockets each?
- What if there is fused spur on the ring? My boiler is on the ring of the living room sockets. What should I do with it?
Many thanks for your answer in advance!
when do you do small r1, rn, r2 test and when do you do big R test?
Thanks for the video gentlemen. It is really helpful to so eone like me who is very interested in electrical installation and hoping to get into this line of work as well as my plumbing and heating. Seems like it is just as expensive as plumbing with the tools and calibration etc with flue gas analysers and multifunction testers. Is it better, cheaper togo for individual testers or better for the multi function? thanks again
multis are expensive but its an all in 1 unit. alot easier if your main job is testing
Thanks for help
Something you could add... if when you do the R1+R2 after doing the R1+Rn, if the switch doesn't switch off the second time round, it would have meant (pending on other tests) that it is highly likely that the switches are double pole and only the neutral pole was switching off
Great video, did you mean to say 0.05 when the reading and calculation was 0.51.
I have confused myself
Great video, thank you for sharing 🙏
When you were checking the spur did you probe up onto the input or did you switch it on & probe on the output?
Outgoing and operate the switch… our spur had NO outgoing circuit 👍🏻
Can you test at the outgoing load from the spur…?
@@GSHElectrical Yes - it's awkward for some, but I can just about. I was just thinking that the load will affect the resistance reading..
Thanks 👍
Very good 👍
Thanks 👍
Are the readings coming down because you've sprayed the plug top and loosened the contacts or just because the liquid is reducing the resistance in the contacts momunterely as it is aiding the flow of current with the plug top being wet ? Just a thought.
Hi Gsh electrical currently am on second year ( actually 3rd gear ) covid 19 messed up every my learning. Questions how to remember to do ring circuit in order
I noticed Marcus used the tips of the crocs when connecting to the conductors, my cps assessor has questioned me twice on consecutive visits how I personally carry this out, if I use the tips he says the spring end gives a better connection and visa-versa on another visit, personally I don't think it matters so long as the contact is good, what is your opinion?
You make some great points 👍
Taking the resistance from the sockets when the whole ring is one continuous conductor made into a loop.
The L & N in the socket may be at opposite ends to the loop. That is, if the loop is 100 metres long, the L & N in the socket will be 50 metres apart on the one and same loop. So the measurement is right around the loop? Hence a reading of 0.5.
Fantastic video, I’m not an electrician, both yourself and JW state on the figure of eight test between the line and cpc should be higher overall due to the thinner cpc but all substantially the same , but the on site guide suggests increase or decrease measurements depending where you are on the circuit?
The on site guide is correct. I tried explaining this to my tutor and he didn't accept it. When you draw it out it makes perfect sense. (r1+r2) / 4 works when you're half way around the ring. As you move along, you will have more cpc on one leg and more line on the other. So the overall resistance decreases as you move towards the ends of the ring
you said in the AM2S theres a fuse spur which goes to a outside socket, when testing at the fuse spur could you not put your probes onto the load side of the spur and click the switch to confirm polarity as well and then test the outside socket like normal ?
Hi
Just came cross job i tested at CU and found r1 higher than rn on 2.5mm cable i didn't have time to investigate can you please advise im going back next week.
Thanks
On a ring you can only spur one and if you want another one you need an fcu. This is because you could potentially draw more than 26amps correct? However, with radial circuits does this reg come into place because before you can draw more than 26amps the 16a mob should trip correct?
yeah mate
Hi I am a huge fan great video as always, a little baffled by calculations.. 1+ 1.67 / 4.. same with other calculation.. can you advise
also you havent said anything about nulling the resistance of the leads when you used the plug in tester,is this something you need to do or not for the AM2S?
Remove the resistance of the leads
Is a ring final and ring main the same thing as a ring circuit just different wording such as earth conductor/CPC etc
Thanks
👍🏻
Massive thanks for being my first super thanks it is very much appreciated. Gaz
after getting r1 0.62, rn 0.64 r2 0.93 end to end, on cross connection what would make you get a figure of 0.00 at socket points?
Brill Ty...
How have you nulled the leads with the plug in leads?
Doesn’t the fuse in the plug cause any issues with the readings? Or is the assumption of a fuse being in the plug incorrect?
there is a fuse. but it should only act as a fuse and should let the current pass with no addition to the resistance reading
Aren't we supposed to carry out isolation, before doing continuity?
Do you have to do it in the board or can you do it in any socket in the ring circuit?
Any point on the ring final circuit 👍🏻
@@GSHElectrical I thought so but I was told it has to be at the board so that the tester won't pick up any parallel paths from other earths or neutrals?
can anyone link me to the earlier learners video they keep talking about? I'm still early days and I'm a little too dumb right now to understand everything in this one. Thanks!

@@GSHElectrical how quick was that reply! Thank you!
Do you need to make a temporary link?
Use a connector 👍🏻
These guys are quite selfless. They probably earn less as a tutor delivering the gold standard than working out in the field on the tools. The college looks cool and if it wasn't for distance I would be wanting to do my 2396-01 here.
Wow thanks for that amazing compliment 🙌🏻👍🏻…
What would be a better lesson might be to show how to split a ring into 2 properly fuse rated radials.
Great video but it was very fast to understand slow stpes would help to understand better
Thanks for the feedback 👍🏻
you hid well, where to put the probes during Step2
Why not show reading on a socket wired wrong. Also show were CPC and neutral is reversed at a socket.
Rewireble polsalin circuit fuses haven't seen them for a good view year's, and the earth conductor wrapped up like. A bandege with green and yellow Pvc tape bit shoddy.
Vordeman ??? Don’t be so hard on yourself Gaz ... your moobs aren’t THAT big 🤣
Great video .. thanks 🙏
You stood in front of the figures on the white board
Sorry
Testing rings is one of the many ways I dislike them. The point at which you disturb the joints are the one area you cannot test.
Joining the opposite L and N in the connector block makes one long single conductor joined at the ends. A loop. I don't think that was mentioned. Could be wrong.
Possibly we didn’t - it’s a training aid so always lots of talking points can be raised 🦾.
we cannot see the connections because the writing comes in front
Turn off your subtitles 👍🏻
@@GSHElectrical Your writings still appears .If all the subtitles are removed then people will benefit more. I am doing Inspection and testing at trade skills for you.I am resitting the exam only the practical. I need to master the practical
those readings tell me the ring is about 125m, voltdrop hmmmm lol
where TF are the American videos? every video I find is from the UK, can't understand them.
