Because when stuff like this happens to communities that have high percentages of marginalized people,( since 80% of people are LGBTQIA+ in the furry fandom,there are also a lot of Neurodivergent people) it makes a difference in the laws that people make, and what they are allowed to come to their city. A city may be less likely to allow a conference, when they hear of behavior like this happening within a community. That’s why people are concerned. I feel like it’s necessary to say that I’m not a furry, but if you can’t see how this is a problem for furries it is shocking.

The fact that that article compared someone who literally kidnapped a 16-year-old girl, who was developmentally at the same age as an 11-year-old.....to someone who does murrsuits or has a fetish relating to the community is insane.

I am kinda in your situation but more towards the liking of the furry fandom more than the hate. I respect people (except zoophiles and furries doing some very bad things, ye know what i mean) who are gay or bisexual, and I do take note that every fandom/community has a good and a bad because it wont be a balance. To me, people are judging by the cover of the book and not whats in it. The cover of the book are bad stuffs about bad furries and things in the furry fandom which relate to it but the pages contain all of the good furries.
