  • Film photography is known for its cliches in the modern era, but a look in the past reveals a more complex picture than we like to quip about online. One of favorite way of learning about photography's past is to look at old photography magazines. My favorite of all time is probably Camera, a Swiss magazine edited by Allan Porter during its most important era, from 1965 until December of 1981. Check out my super awesome photography thrift haul here!

I showed up at 11am and the line was so long. Stuck around for 30min in line but it didn’t move much so I didn’t think I had any chance of getting anything good. Left and went to lunch. Came back at 2pm. Line was all gone and so was most of the stuff. Picked up that last remaining magazines that you left behind like View Camera, B&W, and COLOR. $1 for a bin was a great price.

Oh cool! I'm glad you got those mags! I wanted to so badly, but after all the Camera, Lens Work, and a couple of other things, I was maxed out on carrying/storage capacity. So glad those are going to a good home. Most of the cameras and all of the C-stands had gotten claimed by the time I got inside after about ... I'd say a 30-minute wait in the sun. What a day!

What a collection! There is something sad about the way we view photographs today online & miss that feeling of a print, even it is in a magazine.

I definitely agree! These are very well-printed, and they've lasted for so long. It's hard to even find scans of pages of this magazine online, but here they are dropping into my hands at random times. Online may be cheaper, but sometimes we need to realize cheaper isn't always the best. Thank you for commenting!

What a treat to have access to these pages!! And what a score to get them all for $8! I'm insanely jealous!

Thank you!! I saw the first year on the shelf and I was like "Sweet, a few Camera magazines!" ... Then I saw the entire row was filled with them. I also picked up a ton of Lenswork and some late '90s-Mid 2000s Hasselblad Forum magazines.

@@JamieMPhoto I recently got my hands on a bunch of old 'black and white photography' magazines from around 2004 from one of those free library box things! Jealous of the lush color in these Camera mags though

That's awesome! Those are good, too. There were so many magazines at this thing, but I only had so much ability to carry more. haha. I LOVE library discards. I scored a small stack of 1970s Hasselblad magazines that way, among other fun things.

Oh yeah! I also got a Dynalite 2000 watt pack and head for $60! :)

Aw, thank you!! I have a very unusual video coming up once I can film a little bit more with a friend who has been sick. And I LOVE old photo magazines. :) It was all I could do to not ramble about them for another 15 minutes. ha ha.
