I only made one visit to Towcester before it closed. I thought the finishing hills at Cheltenham and Sandown were testing enough until I saw this place !!
Yes it was, but I never liked Dunwoody or Maguire for their use of the whip. They used to get a lot of paltry little two-day suspensions which didn't put them off. Thank goodness we don't see riding like that now. I was at a testimonial dinner for Steve Smith-Eccles, around that time and he was rather partial to a drop of whisky. He came to our table and gave us a tip in exchange for another scotch and water. I ignored it because I thought he was drunk. The tip: Granville Again for the Champion Hurdle ! 😃
@ a really good tale btw 🙏 But you’ll have to try a lot harder to get me to agree with you regarding 2 all time titans in the saddle , particularly Richard Dunwoody , who Mick Fitzgerald idolized as a young jockey and was the Lester Piggott of the jumps in terms of unabashedly ringing up to snatch others rides apparently . Francome and Smith-Eccles were a great pair with their capers and stories 😆 👍🏴
@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering I'm not even going to try. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Fitzy had a few run-ins with Dunwoody in his time. I didn't like AP McCoy at first but he was given a course of coaching on the correct whip use. He took it on board and he improved his riding to the extent that he is still the standard bearer for present day jump jockeys. I was happy to ask him for his autograph at Market Rasen one day and he was equally happy to sign. 😀😀
Was at this meeting with My Sister. It was exciting Seeing Adrian Maguire and My fav jump jockey Richard Dunwoody. One sad note dunwoodys mount Henry Mann collapsed and Died at the finish of the race won by invasion.
Great track such a shame it's gone
Absolutely 😢
