I'm one of those people who don't really watch tv. Not in a superior way, just it's hard for tv to hold my attention like reading does. That said, I cannot wait for the new seasons of Arcane, Severance and What we do in the shadows!!

I am with you on everything you said about trying to make friends as an adult! I do have a silent book club near me that I go to sometimes and there is chatter at the start and then we read silently, and it's nice, but I'm bad at small talk and don't feel like I really connect with people in those types of settings. It's so hard! And like you said, even if you do go to classes and stuff, a lot of people come in groups, and I won't insert myself into other people's conversations. Ugh, I have no suggestions, but I appreciate hearing you put the same things I'm feeling into words and knowing I'm not alone in my struggle!

I was never good at small talk until I was 30. I mean, I was so awkward it hurt people in a 30 mile radius lol. I was forced to make small talk when I worked at a spa and walked people from the lobby to the second floor treatment rooms. I mean, nightmare situation, right? I still give myself grace and if I'm not feeling it i don't force it. I still have a hard time with follow-up and seeing people again.

As an introverted, child free, military spouse I also STRUGGLE making friends. We just moved and I am having to remind myself it always works out once I force myself to be myself out of the house, but man…it’s hard!
It really clicked with me what you/your therapist said about not going into new interactions for a ride or die friend. It kind of takes the stress of it off. Thank you so much for sharing and always keeping it real ❤

I'm in a large university town (I hesitate to call it city) and over 40. I started to make friends when I joined one of the local martial arts studios. I'm super introverted and it took several classes 😅 Definitely recommend finding group activity that meets often where you're exploring a hobby/exercise you enjoy so the chatting just happens around what you're doing and gently grows from there as you see some of the same people.

@JessOwens I was a total beginner, it's been 2 years and I'm loving it and my little collection of people. I'm doing kung fu but I think the main thing is to find the place where you feel fairly comfortable and there's community

Watching a movie feels like a commitment.
Watching a series in a day isn't the same, though, because you're really only committing to maybe 50ish minutes...several times in a row.

I’ve been contemplating for a long time on joining this crochet club at my library but I’m afraid a bit because I don’t know how, but have supplies and want to learn. It’s nice because it says it’s for all levels (beginner and up). I should make myself finally do that. Also I loved “there’s an ear for every yapper out there” Love this type of just chatting content!

If it helps, I went to a learn to knit at the library, and even though I was the only beginner, everyone helped me out. They were happy to explain to me, what they loved to do. And, conversation comes naturally…oh, is that sweater for your niece?…i love this company for patterns…that wool is gorgeous where did you get it?, etc. The group had been together for a while, so sometimes I didn’t always know what they were talking about, but I was happy to sit and listen and attempt to cast on, lol. Finding IRL friends is definitely tough as an adult. I've made some friends at my weekly dance class at the Y. It took some time, but once people get used to seeing you they tend to open up a bit. If you ever come to H-town let me know. We can do a bookstore crawl or something 😊
I'm glad I'm not the only one who has trouble making friends as an adult. I feel like outside of reading my interests are so different from women my age that it's a struggle. I'm also really socially anxious so going to those events/clubs always sounds so terrifying to do alone.
The struggle is so real. Leaving the house causes me anxiety but I’m trying 🥲
I watch tv... Yellowstone, Outlander, Power, Heartstopper, Outer Banks and The Chosen. Between my tv shows, I read books. Love the new concept of your platform.

I love these sort of yappy, you don't have to look at the screen videos! Anyway, I have the same issues as you with finding new friends as an adult. I moved to a somewhat rural area so I could afford to buy a house and making friends has taken FOREVER. I've been living here for a year and a half and have been actively going to things to make friends for that entire time and have maybe one (1) person who I think I could be somewhat good friends with. It's so disheartening. Finding a BESTIE as an adult is even harder.

It grinds my gears when half of the actual content is in script across the screen then I look up and Im lost smh.

When I moved away from home I needed a motivation to get out of the house, because if I didn't I would spend 24/7 at home and it would really get to me! I think a lot of people are just waiting for other to "plan things"/ "host event" but when you start taking it into your own hands you notice we are all in the same boat! Hosting Hot girl walks,Group painting at a bar or silent Book clubs in the park and putting them on fb or IG and see what happens? you never know maybe your bestie is right around corner also waiting to be your friend 💗💗💗

My librarians strangely have the downlow on community happenings where you can meet people. And I have a Michael's that does craft classes and usually people don't come in pairs to that, so I have met people that way!
That’s amazing. My therapist told me to look into Michaels crafting classes but I looked and mine are all virtual 😫

Also, people who are super morally superior about reading over watching TV. grind my gears in a very specific way because it shows that even though they think their worldview is expanded, it really isn’t. TV shows are a visual medium yes, but they are written! Somebody has put pen to paper for this to come to fruition and that’s hard work. And it’s even harder to take concepts that might be easier to understand on paper and make them visually engaging and in a lot of ways comforting. From these hard hitting dramas that literally have you about to have a panic attack to the deep cut sci-fi that takes incredible special effects to make sense to cheesy procedurals. It’s an intersectionality of artistic expressions and I will be hearing none of that faux intellectual BS.

I've made friends irl by leaning into hobbies - for me it was social dancing; salsa, swing, ballroom lessons etc.
I finally made a small group of new online friends by leaning into a fandom. It took a while but I finally rooted out the fun neurodivergents like me lol
I’ve been diving deep into the fandom space lately, so maybe I’ll find someone there. And I need to do more things outside of the house

My therapist would be on me about making friends too. We talked about using a friend app but I was too nervous. But where I live, I go to a writer’s workshop which gives me my weekly dose of people (because I also work from home) and an extrovert found me and now we’re friends 😂 I have my one in person friend and the rest are in my phone like you said. Haha
And girl you know Abbott Elementary is coming back soon?! I’m so excited about that. I’m also a fan of From and highly recommend it.

We tapped out on "Bones" after the baby in the manger Christmas episode. That show went on for ages. (And the books are good, even though they are VERY different.) Still, we liked it enough to give our daughter the middle name "Joy." I mean, not FOR the character but inspired by.

9-1-1 used to be MY SHOOOOWW! They really turned me off with the way they ended season 6 and I haven't been back for season 7. From what I've gathered from some recaps, they've made some interesting choices (I'm looking at you, Eddie!). And now the trailer to season 8 with the bees I'm like do I wanna go back or are they getting a little too silly now? BUT, if you end up yapping about it I might end up watching just so I can be in the loop 😭

I love cable tv! I watched 911 when it was on Fox and think the story line was better there. I left before the cruise ship tipped. I love Call the Midwife! I get a lot of reading done waiting for shows to start new seasons.

I love Bones, I always recommend Pysch (if you don't like it by episode 3 it's probably not for you). This format is great I joined 2 book clubs in my area to try to make friends but it was still not easy. My one friend started her own knitting club. Also if Nigel is cool with it use him. Some of my good friends I made at the dog park and on walks. Lastly if you are stuck for something to say ask them about themselves, people usually like talking about themselves
I should find a dog park because there’s none near me. Nigel is just so aggressive when he meets dogs- like not in a mean way, like too excited lmao
As for a Fall show I'm looking forward to, I am chomping at the bit for the second (final) season of Arcane on Netflix. As for making adult friends...my friendship circle has only expanded because I regularly hangout with my friends and met their friends, who have now become my friends. I am planning on going on a singles, 30-40 yo, week long vacation (hopefully to Bali) next year. It seems like people generally make one to two friends out of those experiences, plus you get to go on vacation to somewhere new and exciting.

I understand the struggles of making friends as an adult. A lot of women in my age group are mothers and I'm not, so it's not like I can connect through that and wouldn't want to because that would be only a piece of a bigger picture. I can sympathise with the tribulations, but the reverse is a rarity. Comments about how much easier it is for me because I have time for myself aren't really helpful.

I think we might live in the same parish. If so, you are right that they don’t have many things where you can go and meet people. The RRR is going on right now, maybe try that. I’m a huge introvert and almost the only people I socialize with as an adult are people I met at work. I actually met my husband at work 😂 and even formed a book club there.

@@JessOwens for the ph.d. applications you really have to go into it with a whole research project plan which can be a lot so if you are just interested in learning more and don’t have a specific special interest i would look into masters programs first! i specifically focus on cultural and environmental anthropology and am currently research prison garden programs in the US!❤️

Making new friends as an adult is hard...but I don't know why?? I can't figure this out. Are we just too guarded as adults? We moved to a new state when I was in my late 30's and even though I had small kids and was around other parents all the time for years, I never managed to make any new friends here (and that was 16 years ago). At least my nuclear family is really close, and my co-workers are awesome, but still. Sincere good luck to you!!

I have exactly 1 friend at this point, and I am 32. My therapist recommend I use the Meetup app to finding things I could do with people but I also live in a tiny town hours from any major city. Even the events I find that I would be willing to drive for, I can't go to because they are all like "Tuesday at 5". Do people not work?
I downloaded Meetup too and everything is either 3 hours away in the big city or virtual

Definitely understand your feelings that reading is taking up time away from other hobbies, but I tend to get so distracted when watching a show if im not also eating a meal or playing sims lol. But I find I’ve been using reading as an emotional crutch to avoid thinking difficult thoughts so…🫠not sure what to do about that
