The haze didn't happen annually though. It didn't happen in 2020. It really depends on what was happening in the farming sector of Indonesia. The last one that hit was indeed very bad. Worst than having a Covid-19 lockdown. I would close all my windows and hid at home.

(1) Because of our small size (2) Because the govt made it so, to deter consumption. (1) So, obviously, because of Sg's small size, housing is expensive. (2) Three things that are made expensive by the govt to deter consumption: cars, alcohol, cigarettes. Cars, for obvious reasons. Alcohol and cigarettes, the govt imposes "sin-taxes" on undesirable goods, in order to deter over-consumption of them. That's the reason why alcohol is expensive. The govt doesn't want alcoholism to become a prevalent social problem. So, if you don't drink, don't smoke, and don't drive, you can actually survive Sg with about $2k a month, rent included. I know this, because I am doing so. 🙂
To me, safety is my main consideration if I want to visit or live in another country. In Singapore, being able to walk about at 3am without the fear of being robbed, molested, etc. is priceless, something that you can't find in our neighbouring countries and many parts of the world.

Except for friends or social sake, I try to buy back from overseas, or hunt for bargains, or head to local coffee-shops for beers, or organise private parties. Again, as you’ve rightly pointed out, unfortunately for various reasons, the following are eXpensive in Singapore: cars, private housing, alcohol, international entertainment, and some tourist attractions. As a local born Singaporean, I think Singapore is most suited for one who is looking for a country that is built and driven by pragmatism while providing you enough space to live and carve out your own philosophical and or ideological existence albeit within her legal boundaries, and while respecting others.

As a Singaporean. I am really happy to see expats love working & live in Singapore. Yes, we do hope more expats can mingle with the local people. Mostly are friendly and helpful. But of course, not every locals are the same. Just like we also saw some expat disrespect the laws in Singapore and also insult/assault the locals. It happens.. If I am not wrong, we accepted the presence of expat back in the 80s. When our country has got alot of multi-national companies. I agree it is expensive for foreigners living here, esp if u are not employed with expat package with your company.

The majority of the population speaks English in Singapore. Nearly all Singaporeans are bilingual, speaking English along with one of the other 3 official languages.
Fortunately the haze hasn’t been here for awhile (touch wood) after strong measurements from the respective governments. As for the car price it is crazy. The car I drove in Singapore costs 27 thousand pound in UK, but I will need to pay $150 thousand SGD.

Just because "They're used to it" (sic) does not mean that they like it. People prefer the company and society of people like themselves. You can learn the language, or all of them, convert to Buddhism, marry an Singaporean and you will still and always shall be, an farang. As well, standards in Singapore have apparently declined, precipitously, if they allowed you to live there. 20 years ago, you wouldn't even have been allowed to leave the airport.

Yes! Some people like it hot, some people like it cold, some people like 4 seasons, and others just like/miss what they can't have. IAF3417 simply, the hots are hotter in China and the colds are colder. Singapore’s temperature is super consistent and there is always high humidity. China is also a huge country with a wide variety of landscapes and elevations which also affects temperatures.

As someone who lived here for about 5 years now i can tell you this point. Don’t be troublesome and the locals will automatically accept you. But there is no room for condescension or arrogance (seen in many tourists after their trip to Bangkok), the people here are far from the tolerant ever smiling Thai people of Bangkok. Here its fast pace and people (and the government) doesn’t like things going out of normal.
Drink at home will be cheapest, hahaha. Expensive because the govt tries to discourage drinking and smoking, cars to jam up roads and limited land space for development. No choice.

Reserving seats. Don't ever do that. Even as a Singaporean, that is a bad habit that we need to stop doing. One, it reflects one's social etiquette. Two, there bound to be some unscrupulous characters that throw your things away and claim that seat for themselves. So don't learn that bad manners. Instead, have a friend stay on that place and politely say that it's for you.

Singaporean are not perfect people but they embraced their diversity with an opened arms, hearts and minds! They live side by side with great respect for one any! Definitely tensions, grudge and banters do happened but they have quality laws enforce to minimize situations!

Thanks, Andrea. We knew singles living on $2,000 but feel like a family of 3 might want $5,000 minimum. Housing is the wild card. Utilities are reasonable. Eating local food out is very low and grocery are reasonable as well assuming you're not just buying expensive Western foods.

Dude, as a single you'll probably need a minimum of $2,000/month USD if you want to live alone assuming that your company pays for your health insurance and not your housing. If you're a couple making the same assumptions above and living in the same place that the single person would, $2,500/month USD. You'll probably need to added between $500-1,000 for each additional bedroom and person that fills that bedroom (kid) to cover food and housing and that does not included education fees. Great video as always! I thought you would mention the heat as well as the haze. Being hot 24/7/365 is what made me take it off my list of places to relocate to.
Sandra - There is air-condition everywhere you go.... including transportation. Everywhere except outdoor. Outdoor is great in the evening and early morning when it is not so hot. Anyway, hot is better than freezing cold winter. You can jump into a swimming pool any time.... but even that is not really necessary as you can go indoor and enjoy air-conditioned comfort... shopping, hotel, restaurant, at home, office, etc.
Now, practically everywhere in Spore especially housing estates, there are shelter link ways to give shade from sun and rain that you don't even need an umbrella when it is raining.
Is it feasible to live in Johor Bahru (Malaysia) and commute to work across the border every day? (at least temporarily while I hunt for affordable housing in Singapore)
Yes, a lot of people do it. We would highly recommending getting the customs card that allows quicker entry into Singapore for those from the Malaysia side that work in SG regularly. Please know that right now due to the pandemic, things are operating differently.

@@sean2015 if you’ve got the cash to live in Singapore, just do it since that’s where you’re going to work plus with CoVid, you won’t have to worry as much as how both countries are handling it. Getting from the city center across the boarder can take 45 minutes to an hour by public transportation and that’s without traffic or border delays.
Salaries for expats tend to be very good, but it's also very competitive and people don't tend to get their start in Singapore if you know what we mean.
It's very difficult to say because everyone's insurance is quite different, you know? Private insurance is very good though. It's safe to say you'll be paying around $3,000 SGD and up. Thanks for the question.
Public healthcare is alot cheaper but mainly for citizens. Private healthcare options are many but many Singaporeans will buy their own insurance to cover all chronic illness/life insurance. Make sure the company u r working for cover insurance.

Just because "They're used to it" (sic) does not mean that they like it. People prefer the company and society of people like themselves. You can learn the language, or all of them, convert to Buddhism, marry an Singaporean and you will still and always shall be, an farang. As well, standards in Singapore have apparently declined, precipitously, if they allowed you to live there. 20 years ago, you wouldn't even have been allowed to leave the airport.

Its 90f all year round but funnily me n my bro from another mother in PA, usa argued he would rather have 90f than 10-30f cos he has to shovel snow sometimes n needs the heater orelse water gets fozen, i was like nay i would love the snow 3-4 months a year lol
Yes! Some people like it hot, some people like it cold, some people like 4 seasons, and others just like/miss what they can't have. We debated the weather thing but most of us at EE like the predictability of the warm/humid weather over other types of more eradicate weather patterns.

@IAF3417 havent been to china but some countries may experience 90-100degrees to but its dry n windy. Here its humid because we're on the equator even 80degrees feels uncomfortable

IAF3417 simply, the hots are hotter in China and the colds are colder. Singapore’s temperature is super consistent and there is always high humidity. China is also a huge country with a wide variety of landscapes and elevations which also affects temperatures.

As someone who lived here for about 5 years now i can tell you this point.
Don’t be troublesome and the locals will automatically accept you. But there is no room for condescension or arrogance (seen in many tourists after their trip to Bangkok), the people here are far from the tolerant ever smiling Thai people of Bangkok. Here its fast pace and people (and the government) doesn’t like things going out of normal.

Drink at home will be cheapest, hahaha. Expensive because the govt tries to discourage drinking and smoking, cars to jam up roads and limited land space for development. No choice.

Seems like you guys lived in Singapore for quite a while. How long were you both there? I’m a Singaporean but left the country about 5 years ago and moving to Portugal next month.
We were there 4 years. Still love it. Still very connected there. Amazing community of people but just needed to pursue other opportunities in life. We would go back one day to live.

It's definitely harder to assimilate into the local cultures, way of life (for Tokyo and Seoul) but surely a worthy experience. One of my friends from 5th grade moved to Seoul a while ago. Even as a Singaporean, that is a bad habit that we need to stop doing.
One, it reflects one's social etiquette. Two, there bound to be some unscrupulous characters that throw your things away and claim that seat for themselves. So don't learn that bad manners.
Instead, have a friend stay on that place and politely say that it's for you.

Singaporean are not perfect people but they embraced their diversity with an opened arms, hearts and minds! They live side by side with great respect for one any! Definitely tensions, grudge and banters do happened but they have quality laws enforce to minimize situations!
Nice vid, altho I would like a more insightful one in the living aspects (rents, groceries, low profile weekend entertainment, moving around). But maybe this wasn't your goal so eh :) I might be moving as a family of 3 (2+ 1 infant) to Singapore soon. What would you say is a good salary (either in SGD or $) to get a relaxed livelihood in there? No luxury but also no shared house and nothing overly frugal
Thanks, Andrea. We knew singles living on $2,000 but feel like a family of 3 might want $5,000 minimum. Housing is the wild card. Utilities are reasonable. Eating local food out is very low and grocery are reasonable as well assuming you're not just buying expensive Western foods.

It's pretty wild. A lot of Singaporeans do not recommend doing this but it seems like a tissue packet or old umbrella does the trick and is safer to leave than a wallet or phone.

Dude, as a single you'll probably need a minimum of $2,000/month USD if you want to live alone assuming that your company pays for your health insurance and not your housing. If you're a couple making the same assumptions above and living in the same place that the single person would, $2,500/month USD. You'll probably need to added between $500-1,000 for each additional bedroom and person that fills that bedroom (kid) to cover food and housing and that does not included education fees. Sandra - There is air-condition everywhere you go.... including transportation. Everywhere except outdoor. Outdoor is great in the evening and early morning when it is not so hot. Anyway, hot is better than freezing cold winter. You can jump into a swimming pool any time.... but even that is not really necessary as you can go indoor and enjoy air-conditioned comfort... shopping, hotel, restaurant, at home, office, etc.

Yes, a lot of people do it. We would highly recommending getting the customs card that allows quicker entry into Singapore for those from the Malaysia side that work in SG regularly. Please know that right now due to the pandemic, things are operating differently.

@@sean2015 if you’ve got the cash to live in Singapore, just do it since that’s where you’re going to work plus with CoVid, you won’t have to worry as much as how both countries are handling it. Getting from the city center across the boarder can take 45 minutes to an hour by public transportation and that’s without traffic or border delays.

Salaries for expats tend to be very good, but it's also very competitive and people don't tend to get their start in Singapore if you know what we mean.
What about healthcare costs? Private insurance? Never lived there, but always enjoyed visiting.
It's very difficult to say because everyone's insurance is quite different, you know? Private insurance is very good though. It's safe to say you'll be paying around $3,000 SGD and up.

Public healthcare is alot cheaper but mainly for citizens. Private healthcare options are many but many Singaporeans will buy their own insurance to cover all chronic illness/life insurance. Make sure the company u r working for cover insurance.
