If you've ever seen videos by Derrick NOT A FISH or Cream or other SL trolling, you'll get a better idea of why a lot of people are hesitant to engage with avatars that look kind of noob-ish or use voice all the time. They are just kind of silly fun, but I've seen other trolls and griefers who are verbally abusive or spam the chat, play loud or annoying sounds/gestures just to be disruptive, or "litter" an area with objects. There are some really nice people in SL who are willing to help you find your way around, make changes to your avatar or learn about the grid. The guy you chatted with on voice near the end of this video is just one example. Different groups have their own meetings and activities, too. There are sports leagues, there are groups of boat-owners who meet to sail open water together, there are motorcycle or car clubs, there are communities of people who have inworld horses and go riding or hold competitions/shows, there are communities of players whose avatars are mermaids and spend their SL time in ocean/water areas. You can get connected with a lot of these communities by doing a search for things you'd like to check out (not using Destinations, but using the magnifying glass search function). You can search by places, or you can search by group names. Some groups and places are more popular and active than others, and generally the search function will show you the amount of traffic/membership to help you decide what to explore. Maelstrom Eyre inworld, you are welcome to send a friend request and I'd be happy to meet with you inworld some time!
I just found out about you and this series and I like it. An advice I would give is going to the "Places" tab on the search menu instead of the conventional search, on that tab they sort out the places with most traffic at the top. Also the traffic refers to the people that comes and goes so it doesn't really mean there's people in there, usually the traffic for actually active places should be around 20K+, second life is far from being dead on 2024, I'd love to see you explore more, new sub!
In November you should do some shopping. You can usually get free mesh heads and half off bodies. Hit the black friday sales. Though it's usually best to preshop and build the outfit using demos.
They just implemented new lightening, very much so still existing. Currently they’re working on a mobile app. 🤷♀️ You might see more of SL in the future if they manage to pull this off
@@tartarus01for real, as someone who plays in 2024 it's far from being dead, let's see how they do on the mobile app, I kinda find that hard to do bc even with a gaming pc it lags bad sometimes, there's just so much detail and scripts running on every avatar now, I can play any game on ultra no problem but I gotta play SL on mid graphics to actually have a decent experience lol
@@eduardo1624 Same with running on mid 🤣 It’s going to get worse before gets better. With new pbr it made our graphics take a little dive but I think once it is used correctly and balanced out with other kinds of textures things will be fine. I heard someone say billa-pong actually is more laggy so with the progress of PBR we should see less lag as it is phased out & PBR is used for it’s appropriate needs. People smacking PBR on everything really aint helping, especially when the item isn’t meant to be reflective 🤣 I think SL just has an older audience, it seems people graduate from imvu or other apps to play SecondLife these days. Especially as IMVU continues to push payed tiers and “NFTs”, SL becomes more attractive to players who cannot keep up with the prices of IMVU (especially within creation & the fact IMVU steals SL mesh anyways).
When I started I had the same hair as you - a nice Avi gave it to me... I was there 7 years ago and kept coming back - until it started to get bored, or people started to get stupid - it just wasn't fun anymore
I started in 2003 and built sky homes(Hudson Heights) and rented them out. I got to meet some really nice people. I was lucky enough to make some money to pay those damn tier fees. I made a couple of good friends there too. I cashed out in 2008, real life wanted me back. I drop in from time to time like a time traveller watching how the grid changes. Lots of good ones Many of my fav old LM's are no more and others are surprisingly still there! As well as people I used to know. I kind of miss the place. Anyhoo thanks for stimulating my neurons to remember that strange world.
voice is often used between people who already know each other. Try right clicking and IMing the person..and yeah..usually people who are shopping may wander away or not want to talk...live music, educational events, etc. are more likely talk to you in typed chat. Reply
ctrl alt v will activate fly anywhere than hit F and you can fly. Though it only works on a third party viewer like Firestorm. And to my earlier comment, people are more receptive to more invested looking avatars.
Still on line ? I remember when I roleplayed in Gor in 2007-2008. It seems Gor sims are no more there, impossible to uptade the gor meter. A lot of my landmarks go to nowhere now, the other landmarks bring me to completely different sims.
Wtf is up with people just standing there. I tried playing and literally no one talks. Half the time I teleport to a green dot and no one is even there. This game blows
Most of the people are afk. Doign other stuff irl. just be patient, If you wanna talk to people. but most are default avatar snobs so yeah keep that in mind.
you'll have more luck with furry or anime avi ppl than the normie spots ngl but in exchange you'll get more neurospicy behaviors, this game is actually trash if you focus on regular default people/ places
Bots, afk people, lots of reasons. You gotta remember SL isn't just a place to have fun and do stuff, for many its their work/business. Some are logged in to just give support to customers or they are busy working on something. You have to find places that are specific for hanging out where people gather like London City.

Most people in SL use text chat. Long-time users sometimes find other people speaking in voice to be annoying.

Nerd are you ever gonna do a similar thing but with vrchat?
It's per-verse...
This cured my depression!
do you not know you can fly in second life?
It was disabled on that land, but you can get around it with fly override but I'm pretty sure he doesn't know how to do that.
@@HikaruYamamoto looking up a tutorial on this haha I knew you could fly but couldn't recall the mechanics -- had been a bit since I hopped in
@@ObscureNerdVR Its under the advanced tab. Also come to The Ivory Tower in Natoma sometime :)
