    a couple of suggestions...for seat-post I went with a Mt.Zoom Carbon post (144g), Stem Kaloy Uno Super-light + Ti Bolts (90g), Easton EC70 Cranks (351g), XTR Cassette (330g), Wolftooth oval chainring (72g), 2 KCNC rotors (136g), Easton EC70 handlebar (217g), Ebay no name carbon saddle (87g), JRC Kumo Seat clamp 6.6g), Farsport wheels (1365g) and Alligator I-Link shifter housing. I got My trek Crocket7 from 9.1kg to 7.55Kg. All weights are actual.

      Tenatious _E, thanks for good suggestions, but there is a reason I chose what I have on the bike right now. I didn’t have an objective to build the lightest bike possible. For that I have Specialized Crux (see video on my channel), which I have further upgraded after the video and it is now 6.8 kg. For this bike I needed a good value for money and comfort. P.S. Sram XG-1195 cassette is lighter than XTR (265g) ;)

    I just discovered your channel...and watched all your videos yesterday. Very enjoyable. Your videos are very well made, I like your relaxed and humorous narrating style, and your bike smarts are impressive and useful and entertaining. I'm thinking you must be a busy guy outside of cycling or you would have more content, such as actually riding your Topstone rebuild on roads and trails, actually riding and camping in the cross-Britain event, as well as some of your favourite rides around London (or anywhere). Your style reminds me of Rides of Japan, one of my favourite channels on YT. Thanks for your content.

    • @TwistedWheels

    I had those mechanical TRP disc callipers on my e5 diverge, swapped them for Shimano 105 hydraulic and honestly was a huge difference for me. An interesting side note \ hack is that GRX derailleurs are 100% compatible with all Shimano 11-speed STIs, which is what I went with for my 1x11 conversion. Although the schwalbes are light, their performance when compared with panacer gravel tires is not so great, especially on tar for rolling resistance.

    • @TwistedWheels
      @TwistedWheels  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The key word in the title of this video is “(on a budget)” ;)
      Hope RX4 hydraulic disc brake callipers that I have on my Topstone right now perform much better than any Shimano or Sram callipers, but they cost almost twice. I personally not a big fan of gravelking SK tyres (which I assume you are talking about) as while they may be fast on the road, they offer a really bad grip when it comes to offroad riding, especially when it’s wet.

    • @neilk22
      @neilk22 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TwistedWheels the hope products are awesome - no arguments there!
      Re: tire selection, I got the sense that you ride gravel more for comfort and robustness in London wet/pothole conditions more than long days in the saddle over jeep track? What is your balance of these two worlds?

    • @TwistedWheels
      @TwistedWheels  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@neilk22I ride gravel on a gravel bike, I ride road on a road bike, I ride city on a an e-bike and I ride trails on a mountain bike. That’s why I have so many bikes 🤦🏻‍♂️
      For gravel specifically, I want the tyres to be a balanced performance between on- and offroad.

    In the video you say you used the Deda Gravel 100 46mm handlebars, but in the description it says 44 mm. which one did you use and does it matter at all?
    Thanks in advance.

    • @TwistedWheels
      @TwistedWheels  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Deda measures their handlebars outside to outside, so their size 46 cm equals to other brands’ 44 cm (hood to hood), with the exception of 3T who measures their handlebars at the drops.
      The wider the handlebar - the more control you have, but the less aero you are. I’m using 42 cm handlebars on my road and 44 cm - on my gravel and CX bikes.

    Hi, if money was no object what BB & crankset would you have gone with as a replacement to the FSA BB-4000/crankset

    • @TwistedWheels
      @TwistedWheels  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I quite like the cannondale hollowgram cranks (light and stiff) and they are not cheap (unfortunately).
      But since this video, Sram has release Red DUB 340g cranks, so I’d go with that. TBH, my current version of this bike already has it 😆

  • @reneroar
    @reneroar 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    A question about changing/converting the crankset. I have a Cannondale One crankset i don't use, with a spindle (A3006 109L G19). With a BSA30 to BB30 converter kit and a new spindle (A3008 125L D19) i should be able to do the same as you. I want to keep the 2 chain rings and just change them to 30/46, as the more expensive Topstone models.

    • @TwistedWheels
      @TwistedWheels  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I haven’t tried it with the double chainring, but the chainline might be off, as the road double chainrings are designed for 109mm spindle and you’ll be using it with 125mm spindle, so I assume that it will be off by 8mm. Carbon Topstones have 6mm Ai offset of the rear hub, so it will compensate for that. I’m just thinking loud, I haven’t tried it.

    • @reneroar
      @reneroar 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TwistedWheels Thanks for input, didn't think about the offset, due to the crank converter. Maybe it's a better (and a lot cheaper) idea to keep the crankset that comes with the model (Thinking about the Alu 105, 1 or Ultegra) and then change the wheelset and headset/handlebar.

    • @TwistedWheels
      @TwistedWheels  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you have Shimano Sora cranks, then I’d definitely recommend upgrading it for lightness snd stiffness. The solution that will work out of the box is Sram GXP cranks and bb. Sram Force cranks are light and there are relatively cheap used versions on Ebay.

      I don’t have the original axles to check the measures and the new ones don’t have anything printed on them. But if you remove your original axles, there will be length and thread pitch printed on them, so you’d be able to order the same.

  • @TheTK97
    @TheTK97 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This must be the 2019 model right? I’m planning on doing the same (buying the cheapest model „Sora“ and upgrading almost every component) with the 2020 model. I see the version in the video has BSA bottom bracket, wich is very welcome for me as I think threaded BB is the way to go (for several reasons). Does anyone know if the 2020 version still has threaded BB? From pictures around the web it looks like the frame is still the same in 2020 as it was in 2019 (which I also like; never change a running system). Also, is the paint color still the sane? I don’t know for sure so I thought I’d ask some fellow guys here on YT.

      Twisted Wheels one more question: you said you had to reverse the chainring in order for the chain to run straight. In the next sentence you said because the chainring is symmetrical and this is a 1x setup, this works. But I don’t get the logic behind that when you say a) you had to reverse it and then b) it is symmetrical. So what is the difference then? In my head, turning something symmetrical around does not change how it works. I want to use a GRX 1x or Rival 1x setup, but from the pictures it looks like they can not simply be mounted in reverse.

    This is awesome! If the selling of the new components works out well and you are able to sell them quickly, it is really an option to consider! Although, I think it can be pretty tough to buy user carbon components, especially when you don’t know the history of the parts (small cranks in the carbon structure because of a crash, that you can’t see with the bare eye can be critical). I still like this build very much!

    • @TwistedWheels

    Really nice and well thought upgrades. Maybe you just converted a little bit it more towards a cx bike than a gravel one... If I'm right you lost some gears switching from 2x to 1x and some mm a width into the tires (they look narrower than stock ones)

    • @TwistedWheels
      @TwistedWheels  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn’t say CX as I have a different bike for that - you can find a video on my channel where I’m building a Specialized Crux. In terms of switching to 1x - you may be missing some gears on speeds over 45km/h, but that’s when I prefer to stop pedalling and be ready to pull the brakes especially when you going on gravel :)
      On the other side of a spectrum, I have 40-front/42-back gear for tough climbs, which is easier than 34-front/32-back that you have in the original setup. So 1x works great for me and I am not missing any gears. It also allows to use NW chainring on the front and clutch rear mech - both preventing the chain from dropping which you can’t have on 2x.

    Hi, at 1:04 you mention the fork is 390g, but the follow-up text says 460g (which I think is more likely). Which figure is true?
    Also, what is included in the 1,600g frameset weight? Just bare frame, or was there headset, BB, etc..
    Thanks for making this video and listing the parts - helps a ton as I'm looking to compare this to Trek Checkpoint as all-rounder. Subbed.

    • @TwistedWheels
      @TwistedWheels  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, I can’t remember exactly now, but it might be that 460 is the weight of uncut fork with the fork bung, whereas 390g is cut and without.
      1600g is the bare frame (but with paint haha).
      I believe carbon checkpoint weighs the same as this alloy Topstone. Whereas alloy checkpoints are much heavier: both, the frame and the fork with alloy steer.

    • @pesky89
      @pesky89 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TwistedWheels Thanks! Checkpoint is 1,570g for frame (56) and 600g for fork, so 2,170g claimed. But the frameset sold includes thru-axles, head set, seatpost clamp, derailleur hanger and chain guard for a total of 2,480g claimed.
      So the frame weights are comparable but the fork is beefier. I intend to run a mini front rack for backpack ~5kg heavy. Do you think Topstone fork is suitable for that? Checkpoint explicitly states front rack possible, nothing on Topstone.
