      At the time, the information available did point to something being off. Once more information became available it pointed the other way. Its pretty simple. Reporting has to be done with the information you have so its reasonable why people felt the way they did at first.

    • @omgbygollywow
      @omgbygollywow หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Fly-The-W With the information at the time, even I knew Shohei was innocent. Everything we know about him and past behavior pointed to his disinterest in money. There is well-known anecdotes about him not spending any money, and that he is only addicted to playing baseball. His leaving hundreds of millions of dollars to go early to play baseball in MLB, his tiny budget that his mother gave him for allowance, and even scolding his Angels teammates once when they invited him to go to a casino with them, all are evidence of his character. And we did know that Ippei changed his story twice in a short amount of time so we know he had lied. So it was a totally unfounded and baseless and highly reckless jump to conclusion that Shohei was a gambler.

    About the HR ball, Ohtani said “there was a talk with the fan. She gave the ball” in form of humble language. But the new interpreter translated “I talked to the fan”. That’s how the confusion started.
    The new guy speaks more clearly than Ippei but I don’t think Ippei would make that kind of mistake since he has many years of experience.

    There was an issue with Ohtani’s new interpreter and the home run ball. When the media asked Ohtani about his first home run ball with the Dodgers, Ohtani answered that “someone” talked to the fan and was able to get the ball back. But the interpreter made a mistake and said “I” talked to the fan. I don’t think the new interpreter mistranslated on purpose but he doesn’t seem like a professional interpreter either.
    It also didn’t help that a click hungry journalist wrote several tweets and articles implying that Ohtani lied about meeting the fan without reaching out to Ohtani’s camp to check. I felt bad for Ohtani because a lot of people were bashing him when he never said “I met the fan” or “I talked to the fan”. And it turns out that on the day Ohtani hit his first home run with the Dodgers, he was interviewed by the Feds. The whole situation was just unnecessarily blown out of proportion. Good news is that Ohtani met the fan a few days ago and the fan said she was super happy. So everything worked out in the end.
    I hope that Ohtani’s agent and the Dodgers hire professional interpreters (not just one interpreter because we saw what can happen when you rely on one person) for Ohtani and do thorough background checks from now on.

    In regard to the home run ball and the translator, the translator did not lie he simply inferred Ohtani’s context incorrectly. Shohei basically said the fan was spoken to and the ball will be received. But the translator said that I spoke to the fan. He definitely did not lie.

    The problem in Ohtani's case wasn't federal agents wanting to make a name for themselves, but so-called reporters, namely ESPN's Tisha Thompson who fell for the conman's story, reported it uncritically and tried framing the victim as the perpetrator. No journalistic integrity whatsoever, no correction, retractions or apologies to Ohtani whose reputation she seriously tried to damage for the sake of being the first to report the story. There are levels of language fluency. It’s not a simple yes or no when you are learning a second language. I’m sure Jeff Passan talked with Ohtani in English, but I doubt he was talking about complicated topics like finances, taxes, or the law which require a higher level of fluency. In addition, one-on-one conversations tend to be easier to follow along in your non-primary language, than discussions in group settings, meetings, lectures, or fast-paced discussions. Plus, I’m sure Ohtani’s level of English now has improved since he came to the US and Mizuhara helped him to set up the bank account he later stole from when he most likely knew very little English.

But guess what… If money really has the power to bribe US agencies, then how come we still see export restrictions on Nvidia’s AI chips to China? Ohtani is taken care of, by the club, and probably doesn’t look at his bank accounts statements.
