    Hey all! Today I'm bringing you a pickup comparison with my Schecter Hellraiser 7 string. I've recently swapped out the EMG 707s for Fishman Abasi pickups, and figured I'd do a high gain head-to-head when swapping them over.
    Which one sounds the best? Write down in the comments below!
    Each amp sim may sound similar as I'm using the exact same GGD IR settings. The different amp sims are more so to showcase how the pickups handle slightly different distortion types. This will be tested further in my deep dive video.
    If you have any questions regarding anything mixing/production/instrument related, feel free to drop them as a comment below, and I'll try to reply to everyone :)

      How do fluences work? had no idea they could be used in 5 positions

    • @LivingTimmy
      @LivingTimmy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@adriancaulfield There's basically 8 positions. The way I have it wired, you have a 5 way selector switch (bridge humbucker, bridge/neck inner coils, bridge/neck humbucking, neck outer coil, neck humbucker). However in the three humbucking modes, you can change voicing via a push/pull, which alters the tone and response a bit. Seriously versatile pickups! I would have loved to try do a 6 way selector and add a bridge outer or inner coil only setting, but I'm not that good with electronics yet haha

    The EMG 707v sounds richer and deeper, more distorted.
    P.S. I like the bit where you play the music.

    I'm considering upgrading pickups on one of my guitars from pasives to actives, and I've really given a thought to throwing a pair of Fishmans in it, but in every EMG/Fishman comparison I watched so far, I kinda prefer the EMGs, because even though Fishmans seem to be all the rage these days, for some reason every time I hear EMGs my brain's telling me that's what a metal guitar is supposed to sound like. They're also half the price of Fishmans in my country.

    Although this video is older, I am glad that I stumbled across it. I've been trying to do research in order to upgrade the pickups for my 8 string. I have always been bias to Seymour Duncan's pickups. However, the Fishman seem to deliver more clarity. I'm hoping for a versatile pickup to enable versatile writing. I'm thinking Fishman might be the way to go. 🙌☺️
    But, I'm unsure how much difference there is between the Fishman Modern and the Fishman Abasi

    Hands down one of the best comparison videos I’ve ever watched. Great presentation running through all the different settings back to back and even different amps. This should be the new standard people follow. Really dig the split sounds on the abasis, the EMGs have a little more bite in some of the humbucking, but everything here sounded awesome. Great vid man keep em coming!

    • @LivingTimmy
      @LivingTimmy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cheers man! I actually feel the same, the Abasi single coil modes are nuts, but there's little difference to the EMGs and the Abasis. Still prefer the Abasis for both, mainly because there's the mode 1/mode 2 switch for different tones 🤘

      @robadobflob3405 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tosin did his own comparison using his own guitars, but he compares the Fluences to various other pickups in various other guitars. Granted, he has the same signal chain aside from the source, but its a bit less precise. I think it is very worth watching as it clearly shows the difference between his signature set and other leading metal pickups (because lets be honest, 90% of people arent buying his pups for the cleans). I highly recommend it, it's called "Tosin Abasi's Pickup Shootout" or something like that.

  • @InfamouslyCantankerous
    @InfamouslyCantankerous 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I enjoy the emg single coil sound. The emgs are brutal but I find I like the abasi set in normal humbucking mode better it has a bit more clarity slightly less aggression but it seems to be more sensitive to pick attack. Where as the emgs seem to just go balls out regardless. I also feel like the fishmans lend themselves better for consistant tracking. But thats just my 2 cents.

    • @LivingTimmy
      @LivingTimmy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very similar opinion to me! I'd love to wire the Fishmans to have a bridge single coil only mode because I reckon it'd sound amazing, but my wiring knowledge isn't fantastic yet unfortunately haha

    • @robadobflob3405
      @robadobflob3405 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel like the EMG's split sound is more akin to a true single coil whereas the Fluences position two sound is more akin to a high-output SSS configuration superstrat in position two. The Abasi's are more brutal, but the EMG's are more single coil.

  • @flufo
    @flufo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    the fishman fluence single coil tap whatever the hell it is sounds so nice, normal humbucker wise they really don't sound different enough to matter but the position 2 stuff sounds allot nicer on the fishman lol

    • @LivingTimmy
      @LivingTimmy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fully agree with this eh! Position 2 on the Fishmans quickly became my favourite. I really wanted to try put a 6-way switch in so that I could still have just a single coil bridge pickup sound, but that was going to be way too hard haha. Even then there's basically 8 different settings stock

      It's pretty nuts eh! The Abasi doesn't have a "bridge single coil only" mode when you wire it up like Tosin's guitars, but the bridge and neck inner coil setting sounds insane! Definitely doing a full track with that setting

    It would have been easier for my ears to tell what's going on if you first compared the humbucker sound of each pickup and then the single coils after but either way there's not much in it. Given how much hype there is for Fluence pickups and how much trash talk there is against active EMG's I really wouldn't bother upgrading if I had the EMG's already. Good to know!

    • @LivingTimmy
      @LivingTimmy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did actually think of doing that, but unfortunately that thought came to me after I had uploaded this haha. I can always re-export with the humbuckers together and send it through to people if they want more in depth analysis. Was actually surprised that the Humbucker sounds were similar. I'm still glad I did swap them out because I am a huge fan of the split coil modes and the second voice for each pickup (which I didn't demo here). Was expecting a bit more from the humbucking mode though.

  • @AlwayzTired
    @AlwayzTired ปีที่แล้ว

    I know it’s not a popular opinion, but the EMGs in humbucker mode sounded way better to me. The single coil mode on the Abasis slapped harder for sure.

  • @dominikrucka3552
    @dominikrucka3552 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey man, is there a difference in volume between the Abasi's V1 a V3? I bought them recently, brought them to a shop to have them replaced and the guy said (after a week), that because the V3 is a coil split, it also noticeably lowers the volume (compared to the V1), which is a big problem for me.
    Was that your case? Because I've read that there is a volume difference between V1 and V2, but nowhere on the internet I've seen anyone mentioning V3 being quieter.

    In the mix the difference is pretty audible, but both pickups sound good to me. Still the Fishmans have something uplifting to them, like pulling up the blanket from the cab. Raw guitar tracks would have been cool!

    • @LivingTimmy

      Same thought as me eh! The Fishman humbucker does sound a bit better than the EMG, the single coil settings on the Fishmans are on another level though. I'll do a video with all of the different settings of the Fishmans to show it's diversity. Was also supposed to upload a version of this with isolated guitar tracks, so will have to upload it after work today 👍

  • @FatSoundStudio
    @FatSoundStudio ปีที่แล้ว

    I feel like these pickups would compliment each other well. I feel the emgs are a little thicker and less mid forward than the fishmans. Either route you go, they sound great.

  • @robadobflob3405
    @robadobflob3405 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I personally think both are on par with each other for the whole bridge humbucker part of the video, maybe with the Fluences pulling ahead in some and the EMG's in others, but dear lord dis the Fluences destroy the EMG's when it came to the single coil mode. The EMG's sound plain, boring, and lifeless when compared to the sheer brutality and visciousness of the Abasi's in position 2. Not even close.
