After all these years I never knew that so many of the best songs I've ever heard were written by this very talented man. Mr. Webb is a wonderful songwriter!
I'm, watching, & listening, to, Jimmy. I've, goosebumps! What, a belter of a song. A true, talent. This is what music's, all about. Wonderful. The dire, state of, daytime, radio in, England, 2021,..is,absolutely.. ,DIRE!!
Had the privilege of him doing my favorite song live at the Palace on Eastwood Syracuse N.Y. two weeks ago, he was awesome and a true star, stayed after the show for pictures and autographs and was a true gentleman, one of the best songwriters of my time , thank you Mr.Webb
Quite possibly one of the most brilliant song writers of our time! I have cried more to his songs than to anyone else's! Especially when it is him who is performing them!
I don't like his dismissive comment about Joe Cocker being included with Joan Baez, Judy Collins and Linda Ronstadt. Anybody who has a heart and a soul should know Cocker's version was the heartbreakingly BEST version. The other 3 grande dames are amazing, in their own right. But Cocker's version is nothing short of amazing !!!
@@Mikeyboy51866I thought that a bit took.,.clearly not his intention...vhe was going for a gag...three very feminine women and a really masculine bloke He ends by saying how grateful he is to ALL these great artists Of course he was rapt about Joe's version...it's incredible
An absolutely, stellar, performance, from, Mr Webb. Love his voice, his playing, & the way his songs, have that, wonderful, ability,... to touch, your very, soul.
I stumbled upon this looking for the Joe Cocker version. I know Jim Webb as a songwriter, but I had no idea he also performs so beautifully. I’ve loved and sung this song for years now. It’s one of the most moving songs I’ve ever heard, The lyrics are such stunning poetry.
Funny how many people consider Webb to be a weak vocalist, and when you compare hi singing to anyone on the charts today, he sounds twice as good as they do. What he may lack in vocal range or power he makes up for with SOUL.
I have always & still love Joe C and, yes I agree, Webb's songwrting, & his original version is so bueatiful because of histalent, wonderful voice, & because he sings with passion & soul. I love vocalists who feel the lyrics/music.
One of Jimmy's better efforts, but you can see and hear him straining for those notes. One of the best song writers of all time, without doubt, and I don't blam him for wanting to sing his own songs. Well done Jimmy.
Joe captured the phrasing / emotion. Here's another good one. th-cam.com/video/OUhpvfbpDIE/w-d-xo.html Don't like the outside chords but phrasing is wonderful.
I heard a rumor that Kenny Rankin was to record this just before his passing.... Jimmy was to play the piano. ...? I agree - the moon can be Hmmm... difficult. damn Fate-great song
Please show the correct respect..... THE original recording is just that, ORIGINAL!!! Cocker does indeed do a nice COVER of it, but a cover nonetheless?
I listen, respect, & really enjoy all music, all genres, male/female vocals, instramentals, original versions, covers, etc. Literally, I love ALL MUSIC equally, regardless of whether it's old, new, original or cover. The criteria I use to select "my favorites" is based solely on those I love so much that I actually spend money to buy them. Given the paltry pension, upon which I barely survive, there is a distinct point to my selection criteria, that being, I love some a little more than others.
Best version I think is the Radka Toneff, Steve Dobrogosz and Jon Eberson version on "Fairytales" album recorded in 1979. This recording is in the same mood as Stanley Myers "Cavatina", Eva Cassidys "Fields Of Gold", Nina Simone - Mr Bojangles... all great songs
I always found Jimmy to have a lot of potential with his vocals but he's admittedly very unpredictable. There's a lot of moments in this performance where he delivers some exceptionally poor lines, yet by contrast some lines are delivered with such a beautiful quality and control behind them. I kinda get the feeling he just didn't believe in himself enough to take it seriously
One of the greatest song writers, his piano chord vocings are great too.
I loved watching this lovely woman. She got ,Jimmy. She felt the song, bless her!
just beautiful, so much emotion conveyed in his songs. and they are best when he sings/plays them.
After all these years I never knew that so many of the best songs I've ever heard were written by this very talented man. Mr. Webb is a wonderful songwriter!
This song isn't heard enough. Webb is a pop music genius.

I have his "Ten Easy Pieces" CD, really good.
I don't like his dismissive comment about Joe Cocker being included with Joan Baez, Judy Collins and Linda Ronstadt.

I don:t believe he was dissing
cocker at all. I think you are a little too hard the critic.@@Mikeyboy51866

This the best version, bar none. Webb's voice is perfect for the melancholy of having loved and lost that love due to your own errors.
Agreed. The first time I ever heard this was on El Mirage, and in my book nobody will ever beat Jimmy singing his own tune.
Gorgeous. Jimmy is a great writer and singer. Thank you.

I'll always love Joe's version the best. He really nailed this one.
Webb is definitely one of those singers that got better over time!
❤ absolutely gorgeous
Nobody, I repeat! Great song, but nobody can make this song feel, like Joe Cocker. Thanks Jimmy!
Jimmy Webb.....What a blessing.
Jimmy's book is so amazing. Cant listen to him without it.
soulful storytelling in the vocal and beautiful voicings in the piano work.
by far the best version.
Brings a tear every time.

@@hohum488Agree Cocker version is superb, I am not sure Webbs comment on Cocker singing it in the beginning go this vid
Exactly, try replicating it……….trust me.
A stirring rendition of a lovely song by a premier composer.
I would reccomend Jimmy's book 'Tunesmith' It gives some real insight into his songwriting process. There are some amazing stories.
Oh my , look what happens when you sing as though you wrote the song ! Bravissimo
The genius that is Jimmy Webb
nobody can sing this song like joe cocker
The Radka Toneff version of this song is one of my all time favourites.
Me too.
Agree 100%

My favourite songwriter of all time… I prefer the Joe Cocker version but this song - along with MacArthur Park - is in my Top Ten songs of all time!
Agree with you on the late Mr. Cocker.
Joe captured the phrasing / emotion. Here's another good one.

Don't like the outside chords but phrasing is wonderful.
I really enjoy Pat Metheny's acoustic rendition
beautiful performance
LOVE!!!
and Lisa Cheallaigh!! ^^ my favorite version :)
IMO... Joe and Glen sang this song better than anyone else that recorded it!
Check out the beautiful voice of Scott Walker. Magic ❤
I heard a rumor that Kenny Rankin was to record this just before his passing....
Jimmy was to play the piano. ...?
I agree - the moon can be Hmmm... difficult. damn Fate-great song
A versão com Glen Campbell ainda é a melhor 🎼🌹
I agree this version is beautiful, however, Joe Cocker's version has the most emotionally powerful.... and my absolute favorite!
Please show the correct respect.....
THE original recording is just that, ORIGINAL!!!

I'm surprised that (to my knowledge) Art Garfunkel hasn't recorded this, as he's done a lot of Jimmy Webb songs, and it sure suits his style.
Joe Cocker nails this song, better than all the rest.
It was also recorded by Pat Metheny and Charlie Haden.
It was also recorded by Tom Wopat
Best version I think is the Radka Toneff, Steve Dobrogosz and Jon Eberson version on "Fairytales" album recorded in 1979. This recording is in the same mood as Stanley Myers "Cavatina", Eva Cassidys "Fields Of Gold", Nina Simone - Mr Bojangles... all great songs
Beautiful song! Listen to Radka Toneff`s version.
I prefer Josh Groban's cover. But this is great!
Couldnt run me off a copy could you? So expensive on Amazon!
And pianist.
Oh. forgot to say, Glen Campbell does the definitve version, blows Cocker away, without doubt.
Ok he wrote this but do your selves a favor listen to Joe cockers version brilliant cocker power the world
he cant hold a candle to Radka Toneffs version though th-cam.com/video/XtgIxU8TCyY/w-d-xo.html

Glen Campbell has them all beat in his rendition.
Not the Point!
