  • How de do fella's? Today we's making us a slick (not quite historically accurate) Viking round shield. Out of pallets. And a frying pan.
    Also accidentally the heaviest round shield in the history of, well, anything.
    This is the design i (shhh) copied. No clue who's it is, just found it on google images. Very sweet design: i.ebayimg.com/...

      I am a PC sinner, ashamed to say. I use Cyberlink Powerdirector. I think I have version 15. You?

    • @HappyMadScientist
      @HappyMadScientist 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Started out on PC but switched to mac in 2015 and I'm NEVER turning back. (Much to my grandfather's dismay. He has been a windows computer technician for 40 years) I use Adobe Premiere Pro CC and an iPhone 6+ for shooting video (mainly because it has a good microphone).

    • @HappyMadScientist
      @HappyMadScientist 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Considering switching to Final Cut Pro X because Premiere takes so dang long.

    • @jakemakes
      @jakemakes  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, Macs are nice. I use macs at church, thats what our sound system uses, cause the fella who set it up was a mac guy. The thing I don't like about macs is how dang pricey they are. But, they are simple and just work. So I dunno. You film with an iphone? Wow, I wouldn't have guessed that. I am surprised at the quality of the audio. Pretty good. What is the difference between Final Cut and Premiere? I mainly decided to use Power Director because my Dad already had used it, and I knew how to use the system. I believe they are all fairly comparable, so I figured I'd just get an upgrade on what I already knew how to use. That's the main thing. Spending enough hours using the program to figure out how to use it effectively.

    Viking shields (and most shields really) rarely RARELY ever had a metal edge. It was usually rawhide and it was just to keep the wood from splitting and protect it from moisture and rot.

      Also you wanted weapons to bite the axe and not deflect off. cause the weapons would be stuck even for a second to give you a chance to strike while they were stuck

    LOL! Time to start a high protein diet. I almost made mine two layers, but knew it would be heavy as all get out. Frying pan for a boss, good idea. Would be cool if you could use blueing on the boss and trim or hit them with sulfuric acid wash.

    • @jakemakes
      @jakemakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey that’s an idea. Dunno how the metals would react to a blue… probably wouldn’t match. Different alloys and stuff. Also i think the metal I used for the trim is galvanized

    Most accurate viking shield replicas are actually closer to 8-10 pounds xD The part of the shield closest to your handhold would only be 1 cm thick while at the rim it would be around 6-7 mm (give or take). I'd recommend using bracing ply, you can get a 4' by 8' sheet for like $16 at Home Depot.
    Because of how light they were you'd need to up the protective power without adding weight. Literally lather each side of the shield with wood glue or elmer's glue and stretch an old bedsheet over top of it and cut out the shape, this will hold the wood together so you can afford to have it as light as you need it. Also it makes a good canvas for painting on your design. You can also add a few braces of wood that are parallel to the handle to help the wood from splitting too deeply. You might want to make the handle smaller as well, with how much it's bulging out the shield is just going to want to fall forward whenever you're holding it, just plane it down so the handheld is almost in the hole. Yeah there's a lot of weird science to this that I never would have thought I'd know but here I am xD Just look up Thegnthrand's video to get a way better visual.
    Not dissing on your project it looks great I just figured you might want to make a lighter one next time xD I did like the exact same thing with making the shield way to heavy.

      @WolfManWv9 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Would you glue a bed sheet on both sides or just the front?

    • @jakemarsh8967
      @jakemarsh8967 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WolfManWv9 Both, the sheets and the glue hold the wood together. Also it's just more comfortable to have your arm resting on fabric.

    • @jakemarsh8967
      @jakemarsh8967 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WolfManWv9 Be generous with the glue, if it soaks into the sheet that's perfectly fine. It may add a bit of weight but since wood glue can be stronger than the wood it really helps hold it together.

    • @jakemakes
      @jakemakes  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not that I don't know what 36 divided by 2 is, I do. It's 18. (see?) I can do math. Really. 2+2=5. See? I can do math.
      You want to know my theory? I think an extraterrestrial alien came down (to view more closely the rare spectacle of the great Jake building a MOST impressive Viking shield) and while watching accidentally let off his laser vision which unintentionally temporarily fried the ventrotemporal occipital cortex of my brain, rendering me incapable of carrying out unaided by pencil and paper the simple task.
      Under normal circumstances I DO know that 36 divided by 2 equals 17.
