I had to rewatch the Librarian segment a few times.
At 18:34 you can see how close but still behind Rom is.
By the time they leave that room, Rom is ahead.
That's some strong menuing game right there, very impressive!

My guess with the wolf divekick is that they wanted to make sure you weren't put into a state you could infinitely double-jump out of, so they treated it like you'd just used the Leap Stone.
