Queering Animal Crossing | A Helpful Guide to Queer Readings

  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons is an extraordinarily playful game that let's all kinds of players express themselves in creative ways. When two new characters to the series, Flick and C.J, showed signs of being romantically involved a lot of people ran with it, while others pushed back with arguments of canon and lore. What the latter group seem to have missed is that Animal Crossing is quite the queer environment, where queer readings are living freely.

      You could easily draw parallels here with the real world and how the existence of gay people at times have been painted over. Oh, so you are saying that this author lived together with her "friend" for their entire life? Yup, just friends. Nothing to see here.

    "theres no romance, its a kids game!"
    really? how come smug characters in the game have LITERALLY said they wanted to kiss snooty characters? how come there is actually going to be an ingame wedding? why arent they getting mad about that? after all, its a kids game, without romance, right?

    • @Transparencyboo
      @Transparencyboo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +76

      The problem is that they see homosexuality as inherently sexual, and heterosexuality as not. So to them showing a gay couple in a kids show is inappropriate, even though it technically is no different from a straight one. It is a complete lack of understanding of the issue basically.

How the fuck nintendo has the guts to put that in a kids game,cancel nintendo from trying to make our kids gay"

    it always annoyed me when people AGGRESIVELY pointed at that thing calling Flick and C.J. business partner and roomates, and choosing to take that as a confirmation that they arent in a romantic relationship, cuz let me tell you something, buddy. theres another pair of characters who are business partners and roomates in animal crossing. I've actually read Frodo/Sam as Frodo crushing hard on his best friend, but Sam ends up just being straight, so Frodo gets sad and broods with elves. In the Jackson film version, anyways.

    • @Transparencyboo
      @Transparencyboo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Oh yeah, totally. Like the interesting thing is that could be part of the queer reading as well. Because you see they have their romance through the books, and in the end Frodo wants Sam to move in with him, but at that point Sam is moving towards a woman instead. He is torn up about it, and Frodo leaves to never come back. And by that point the heteronormative hegemony is restored. Quite interesting.

    I love how you made most of the visuals for the video using Animal Crossing. Very cute! And the you're on point with the central topic. This is something that I see over and over, again and again in pretty much any media I consume. If someone reads a character as non-heterosexual or transgender, someone else will be fighting tooth and nail to disprove that reading, completely missing the point of a *reading*. Especially when it comes to gender, actually. Mordred from Fate (easily read as trans man or non-binary) and Gwyndolin from Dark Souls (easily read as trans feminine or non-binary) comes to mind.
    Sometimes you gotta just laugh at people tho. When Mordred literally has dialogue where they draw their sword at a character and says "Call me a woman again and I will use your throat as a sheath." and people still go "nooooo she's totally a cis woman, anyone who suggests she's otherwise is just an sjw" what are you supposed to do, lmao

    • @Transparencyboo
      @Transparencyboo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      In the anime/manga community there seems to be a lot of problem too with how to approach these things. Not the least when it comes to trans people. With a lacking understanding of trans people and words that are clearly malicious to refer to us it does not surprise me at all that they would have clouded perspectives. We think that part of the problem though is the obsession with "lore" as a self serving concept. It really does stifle a lot of people's ability to do basic media analysis and critique.

    it's probably super intentional by Nintendo to make it so ambiguous specifically so there's no answer. they know theres an entire subset of queer people play their games and they want to cater to as many people as possible without upsetting the rest of the audience. they've always tried to be ambiguous like this; despite him (them?) being portrayed as male as time went on, link was always intended to be androgynous from the beginning so that girls could see themselves in the protagonist role too. this is only a logical progression of that philosophy. people who attempt to say that there's no intention for the two to be gay have no ground to stand on, because they're trying to assert intention by the developers for the to BE a correct answer, when there isn't one. they're just as right as us, but they're not happy unless them being right needs to mean us being wrong

    • @Transparencyboo
      @Transparencyboo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nintendo have had a pretty clever way of basically getting past having to deal with too much "controversy", I guess you could say, and still being accomodating to queer people. Like we said in the video you dont choose a gender in Animal Crossing, people refer to you by they and so on. The idea of choosing a 'style' instead of gender will also be implemented in Splatoon 3 and Switch Sports goes in further in how it doesn't even present an option at all, it just plops you in the character creator and lets the outfits and whatever you decide personally to define you. And like, yeah, it's not perfect, but I think it's a pretty neat.

    Thank you for this. I do have problems with people who are so used to being represented (aka straight cis white people) that they just assume nothing can be queer simply because it isn't outright stated - totally lacking any sensibility and ability for interpretation and textual literacy. I don't mind if they don't see it but that they need to scream and yell about it online to "disprove" our queer reading of something bothers me. And especially when they refer to us EXISTING and interpreting media to reflect our EXISTENCE as us having an "agenda". Or when they refer to something as "family friendly" and make those words an all-out argument why something can't be queer. Because of course being queer could never be "family friendly". (But it's cis-het people who give cartoon animals eyelashes and boobies to make SURE the audience knows it's a girl-animal, lmao)

    If you ask me, the storytelling in ACNH is very vague, and it's like that on purpose to encourage the player to add their own narrative.. :P And since every player has their own island with their own narratives, I believe that you can apply any sexuality you wish to any character, it's your island after all.. ^^

    "Assumed hetero until proven otherwise" Story of my life! Both my fiance and I are Bi, we just so happen to have ended up together in a relationship and everyone seems to think this means we're no longer Bi. I'll never understand the thinking. Just because I chose to spend the rest of my life with him doesn't mean I stopped being attracted to women, doesn't mean I haven't been in love with a woman. And the same goes for him. He didn't magically stop thinking men were sexy because we're together...humans as a whole need to do some serious work on this whole sexuality thing, because our ancestors totally understood it was fluid...all the ancient cultures were cool with queers, it's only in the last 1000 years or so anyone decided to have a problem with it, and those were just men seeking power. It's okay to be gay! HISTORY SAYS SO!

    If you'll allow me to stoop to their level of "what is canon" and "a game with no sexuality" (referring to romantic relationships, I agree the game has actually sexual elements to it for obvious reasons); in new leaf which maintains the gender binary and thusly allows you to pick either male OR female one of the flagship characters of the franchise, Isabelle in her very first appearance, has a crush on the mayor... Even if they're female. Making Isabelle (who is as mentioned before a practical mascot of the series) canonically bisexual.
    There's no way around it, it's pretty damn explicit. If you guys aren't objectively homophobic and are simply ignorant and in need of a character expressly showing they are queer: there ya have it.

    The argument that the text isn't explicit doesn't even apply here. "Partner" is a pretty explicit term, especially in a fictional culture that as you pointed out tends to prefer gender-neutral language. It's ambiguous, because it could also mean business partner, but that just means that a reading where they platonically run a business, and a reading where they smooch, are both based in the text.

    • @Transparencyboo
      @Transparencyboo  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We are aware, however it genuinely doesn't matter to our interpretation. We're clearly playing the game in English and interacting with it from that perspective. It's not like other localizations simply existing has any material impact on our reading at all.

    Wow! Awesome video, fun and very interesting. So a queer reading is mostly about assuming less, expanding and blurring the lines of a culturally assumed framework? That's an idea I can get behind.
    Do we really want to see this turn in big capital entertainment though as a first choice? Isn't it a little better when small house productions strike big while propelling this change so we get to shrink the giants that are Hollywood, Disney and Nintendo in the same process?
    I find this important because when it occurs, that means I will get the show/movie on my Netflix, or if it's a game, on my PS4 or Steam.
    Why isn't anyone thinking about the Switchless!?

    • @Transparencyboo
      @Transparencyboo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it might be hard to control who makes representation in media, especially considering how big some of these companies are. What we can do is perhaps use queer theoretical approaches to critically view these big company movies and bring forth criticism. Seeing how Disney for example have made really shitty stuff connected to women and lgbt characters we have a lot of things to talk about. Maybe this was not touching too much on what you were thinking?

    People going about completely rejecting fanfiction and ships in such an unfettered fashion really don't sit well with me. I completely agree that it's important to concider that multiple readings - intrinsic, extrensic, author-centered or whatnot, are all very much concidered viable and important even within academia. It's always important to explore multiple perspectives even if your opinon should differ, it not only to get a more informed view of the particular topic.
    However, I do disagree with your notion that norms and assumptions don't at all matter whilst reading into stories or societal contructs. There will always exist minorities and majorities, and while I myself am part of the LGTBQ-spectrum, I also acknowledge that I am part of a minority, and as such won't always be included in every discourse or newly written tale. There are plenty of works throughout history that explicitly do touch on the close intimacy of same-sex characters, going back as far as the Victorian era and probably further - even if the concept of homosexuality didn't really exist, or at the very least wasn't embraced, in the fashion it is today. In a similar fashion many works don't at all include such notions, and that's fine. While I realize the importance of challenging heteronortmative narratives, I also realize that sometimes, certain narratives simply resonate better with the text. It is still fine to see different readings, of course, but to say that they fit the tale just as well might be a bit of a stretch. To say anything else would border on postmodernist deconstructionalism for the sake of making everything accessible for everyone, and this is problematic. By trying to make everyone part of a certain community, you inheretely exclude some people. I do think that a cultural environment gains rather than loses on having demographics and tailoring works for certain groups of people. Inclusion does not only entail making everything for everyone, but also making certain things be for only a select few - Like when you choose not to include accessibility options in a game such as alternate control schemes or difficulties in order to only make it play one very specific way. For some this makes the game unplayable, for others it makes it consistent and more focused as an experience.

    • @Transparencyboo
      @Transparencyboo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh, we are not really saying that norms and assumptions don't at all matter to a reading of stories or societal structures, especially not for the latter. It depends highly on what kind of reading you are making though. In the end we don't think the point is neccessarily to include everyone either. The idea is simply that you can make a reading of a piece of media through different lenses, and that there is no real objective one that is more correct than any other. We are not trying to say that there should be LGBT characters in every single story of course, that does not necessarily have to be the case.
