This movie will forever have a Place in my heart. It reminds me of staying at my college girlfriend‘s house. She had like 10 DVDs and I would pick you’ve got mail to fall asleep too every night I stayed with her for a year. That was a really, really happy time in my life.
I loved this movie and share every sentiment with Jon Lovett 100%. I also thoroughly enjoyed this discussion and look forward to more from this group in the near future. It felt like a refreshing break from the madness.
This movie is such a vivid walk down memory lane for me. I lived in that neighborhood for 20 years. All those street, shops, parks. Just that neighborhood was such a big part of my life.
Kendra - I LOVE your shoes! They jumped out at me as soon as the shot of the three of you came up ☺️ Everyone who sees this comments - Have a good day. We’ll get through this stupid time.
As terrible as the internet is on the whole, as discussed in this very video, every now and then....you'll stumble across a comment like yours. Just a bit of casual humanity and kindness. It might be small....but honestly? Comments like yours stick with me, sometimes for days. It's a kind of relief to encounter something like that on today's internet. So....thank you for that!
Max, the price on the book is not THE price for the book. Just like the price printed on a bag of potato chips is usually higher than the grocery store will charge you for it, the price you see on a book cover is only the recommended retail price (RRP). Bookstores order copies from the distribution company, and they have 90 days to sell the books, or return them to the distributor. Independent bookstores like Kathleen's are smaller than a chain store, so they tend to have a more curated selection of books than your average chain store (which is why her store specializes just in children's books). Indies buy books at wholesale prices, then sell them usually for the cover price. That difference in price is their profit margin, which then pays for employees, electricity, taxes, insurance, and all the other overhead costs (like those canvas bags and the ribbon she uses to tie up the purchases). Stores like Fox Books have an advantage, however. The publisher is obligated by law to offer the same discounts (from 40% to 55%) to the same vendors based on the *volume* of their purchases. With her lower volume of sales, Kathleen would only get the 40% discount, so a book marked $19.95 (round it to $20 to make this easy) will cost her $12 per book. Because Joe's store does more volume, he can purchase those books at a bigger discount of 55%, so just $9 each. Kathleen has to sell that book at the $20 cover price because she needs every cent of that profit. Joe can knock 20% off the cover price and sell it for $16, and because he has _more_ copies of the books on hand and gets more people looking at it on a day to basis, he's likely going to sell more of those books than Kathleen does. So that is what Joe is complaining about: Kathleen is selling these books at full price, and since she is the only place to _get_ children's books in the area, she has a captive audience _and no competition._ While her older selection of hand-painted books might be "worth more" as her employee says, the obviously newer books up front being sold for cover cost are still expensive. This is why the chain bookstores like his (and like the real-life ones) became much more popular; more variety, and steeper discounts.
Meg Ryan recently directed a low budget romcom with David Duchovny and did a phenomenal job. The Rom Com characters break up and meet up like 30 years later and i wish she had gotten more money for it. Give meg Ryan money to make movies
Did a phenomenal job? That film was awful. It wanted to be this one but had neither the writing nor editing chops to make you like the characters regardless. And what was the dancing to Lightning Seeds scene about?
Knew that I had heard this before - it is a rebroadcast of Episode 123 - but since I can't listen to any actual political podcasts right now, it was a great idea to release this.
What do we think of the fan theory that Dave Chappelle's character is imaginary because Tom Hanks has no friends and can't imagine anyone but an employee he is paying to talk to him?
Can't wait to listen to this in a few. I was just thinking about You've Got Mail since I made a video essay about Sleepless in Seattle just a week ago!
What a fun and entertaining discussion! I also remember with fondness waiting for or receiving those instant messages😅 These type of segments definitely help a bit deal with the current reality🙈
The worst take in the film is “the whole reason for leaving the house was to miss what’s on TV” or words to that effect. Who is leaving the house to get away from the TV?
Dating in America being a complete dumpster fire is to blame for online dating. We don't have anything built into American culture that actually gets people to meet each other, aside from online dating. American culture has been socially broken since the 80s and we now need online dating to have any chance of connecting with someone on any kind of meaningful level.
These 3 have wonderful chemistry even though they're all very different personalities, but the synergy is amazing. Also, i wanna know more about Kendra, she has great anecdotes in all the pod appearances.
The plot of “You’ve Got Mail” is basically 1984 by George Orwell, but done as propaganda for big business. Tom Hanks is big brother, and in the end she falls in love with her oppressor after being psychologically manipulated and effectively brainwashed. Movies from the 90’s actually have a lot of fascist logic baked into the plot, like “Lion King” (the lions literally eat their subjects, there is a demonized other across the boarder represented by hyenas voiced by the only 2 people of color in the cast and a main villain that is very queer coded, and they even sing a song about how they are the natural rulers of the lesser animals in their domain), or “Demolition Man” (Clear Copaganda, where a more masculine and violent form of policing from the past is needed to fight a super intelligent and ultra violent, big black man)
I think it's really interested how different your guys interaction with the internet and texting is and people my age's (I'm 25). You are talking any going back and editing your texts, and like who does that when you are in a back and forth??? (That's why half the messages are like corrections for auto correct from the previous one). Also like voice memos suck, hanging out in discord calls while everyone just does whatever it is while chatting about random stuff.
They are actually cheating on their partners. Both had live in partners in the beginning of the movie and both would wait for their partners to leave before messaging each other. Not much has changed…
Guests don’t seem to know it’s a remake of the Jimmy Stewart/ NargaretvSullivan Lubutsch classic “ The Shop Around the Corner,@ which had already been remade as the Judy Garland musical “ In the Goid sold Summertime.” There’s a lot in this one based on slight modernizing turns on the older ones.
The discussion was really interesting but would it have been different if Max had been wearing a skirt up to his knickers like Kendra? Or if she was wearing trousers and flat shoes?

Lmao they really said “ok fuck the election let’s have a fun podcast”
And it is greatly appreciated 😁
It's what we need to survive at least the next 4 years. Or more, if Dear Leader Emperor Trump has his way.

@@christineanyalai5008 “what happens later”
I had to look it up because my brain is incapable of retaining that title
Lovett - When I saw this movie... FOREVER AGO... I said, when exiting the theatre, "Why didn't he just let HER STORE be the kids' section?!"
Knew that I had heard this before - it is a rebroadcast of Episode 123 - but since I can't listen to any actual political podcasts right now, it was a great idea to release this.
This is a great new series. Lovett, Kendra, and Max have great chemistry on the topic. I read Admissions and really liked it.
Update for 2024: Meg Ryan as a plucky pot dealer going up against big money SF investors opening a med/rec dispensary
You're describing Disjointed lol

the fact that we're not name checking the bit parts. The "cashier" is Sara Ramirez!
I stand corrected. They finally name check them at the end of the video.

American culture has been socially broken since the 80s and we now need online dating to have any chance of connecting with someone on any kind of meaningful level.
I met my wife of almost 20 years through online dating. She is disabled from a birth defect and I am a hermit. So it works for some people.
Shop Around the Corner starred Margaret Sullavan. Margaret O'Brien was 3 years old at the time.
I loved this conversation, and I love school supplies. I definitely will be watching this movie over the weekend! ❤

Kendra Kate and Leopold episode when?
I’m a Bosom Buddies kid. I always enjoyed Tom. I have never been able to see Tom Hanks as attractive in any role. Nope.
To be fair, she didn’t say I don’t vote. She confessed that she didn’t vote and she was ashamed of it. Or at least she should be ashamed of it.
Midwest is still dipville. can't go anywhere without encountering a dip of some variety
Kendra's laptop is giving me sticker envy
a remake of this movie that turns into a horror movie would be awesome
An email is more asynchronous than other social media methods.
I did a You've Got Mail self tour. Visiting some of the sights. It was so fun. Good memories
But back in the early 2000's

Val Kilmer? At that time Tom Hanks was considered a dream boat. Nostalgia is wasted on the young.
Bill Maher just had the Friday evening slot so that's why I used to watch him lol
But I really was just waiting for John Oliver lol

I saw that in theaters when I was in middle school with my friend Rebecca and my parents still didn't know I was gay.
😂
Is Andrew Garfield the new Tom Hanks?
I thought the typewriter thing was kind of poking fun at Hanks. I think it’s really well known that he is a typewriter collector.
Absolutely. The Internet helped break my 16 year old daughter. God help me
The AOL "You've Got Mail" guy died recently.
Needed the distraction. Thank you
I need to know more about the woman in the cheetah heels
Best movie 🤗 But also Watch Lindsay Ellis' video essay on it 😂
I remember watching it as a kid in the movie theatre. So bland.. how it did it ever become a classic.
Anyone who is a Kate and Leopold girl is a friend of mine

this is true. i still love this movie, but even as a teenager I was like uhhhh, guys!?
I hate this movie so much. But now I really want an A24 horror film remake!

They mention that on min 3:43
Well, I think we’ve established to one of these movie reviews without John is a waste of time.
