Ur, Mesopotamia, 500 BC

Ur is known as one of the world's first recorded cities, and one of the most important of Mesopotamia, especially during the Sumerian empire. It's remains can now be found in modern-day Iraq. When Ur was founded, the Persian Gulf's water level was two-and-a-half metres higher than today and so although the ruins now sit almost 150km from the sea, Ur was once a coastal city.
Ur remained a dominant city through the Sumerian, Assyrian, and Babylonian empires. After almost 2000 years of rule, Ur finally started to decline around 530 BC after Babylonia fell to the Persian Achaemenid Empire, The demise of Ur was made worse by changing river patterns, and the silting of the outlet to the Persian Gulf. As Ur grew further from the sea, its viability as a port and trade city disappeared. Archaeological digs show that by the end of the 5th century BC, Ur was completely abandoned.
