I’m so thankful for stories such as these. True heroes. Thank you for sharing their stories and recalling events. PTSD didn’t exist quite yet, even after WWI shell shock. The traumatic events weighed heavily on these men and fought bravely. IF you're interested in reading below, my grandfather wrote on his personal experience on D-Day (1st Infantry Division aka Big Red One). Omaha Beach- 1st wave Walt goes to the Army: "Around May 24th - 25th 1944, we were placed on alert. We could not leave our company area. This was enforced by armed guards that were posted around the area. It is at this point we commenced our last part of the training. They had large layouts of the area where we were to land. These areas were memorized. They had all the known obstacles set in our sandbox displays. We spent two days going over what we were to do when we landed. We know this area by heart. They also issued some additional equipment. I was issued 280 rounds of 30 caliber ammunition, one pound of TNT, two hand grenades. They also gave us two shots of morphine for our first aid kits, a life preserver, and issued a gas mask in a waterproof container. As rations were issued, 3 days of supply of K rations and a carton of cigarettes(once in combat, you got free cigarettes). The last thing we had was a partial payroll. We were each paid 5000 French Francs in invasion currency. As a Franc was worth about 2 cents to US dollar. With all this extra equipment, this was not another dry run. On June 2, we loaded on a LCT landing craft infantry in the Weymouth Harbor and waited for the day to arrive. In the night on June 5th we left Weymouth Harbor for the ‘Great Crusade” to Europe. While on this ship, there were five things to do to past the time: Sleep (which we did in large quantities). Play cards (which could get a little weary after a while). I had good luck so I played longer and had increased my francs from $10 to $200. If you broke the rules and brought a book, you could read. You could look over the starboard side of the ship and see other ships with weary passengers who had the same feelings as you did. If you looked over the the port side of the ship, you could see all the Pubs that we regularly attended ... So much for all the excitement aboard the ship. We were able to get off twice and take 30 minutes of exercises. On the night of June 5th, we retired docked in Weymouth Harbor. The next morning we were all up by 5 o’clock at the instance of a sergeant, got dressed, and had our last food meal for the next several months (this would depend upon the time of your death or injury). About 7:30 am, the Navy started the shell coastal defenses. The Air Force started bombing the same area. While this was a good show, the results were less than desired. The gun emplacements were built in concrete and hard to put out of action. At about 8:30 am, everything started to go wrong. The wind was blowing from west to east. It was about twice as hard as they planned. The Higgins boats all got blown off course and most of the troops landed in the wrong place. We were about a half mile further east than we should have been. This we discovered at the water’s edge and with no means of correction, we started for the hill. The Germans had two pillboxes guarding the area we landed on and the Air Force had managed to score direct hits on the trench. The few Germans in this area that remained alive were rather groggy and we advanced up the hill with very little opposition. We captured a few prisoners that we put on the next Higgins boat and hoped they got as sick as we did. The enemy troops were partially Czechs, Poles, and Russians who had been taken into the German Army as volunteers. You either volunteered for military service or got shot. These troops were more than happy to surrender. We lost four men going up the hill mostly to stray artillery. After reaching the top of the hill we regrouped, went over and came down the hill, the place we were supposed to land. The defenses could not be turned around so we were able to open up the hill. By no means was it noon. The rest of the day, we spent trying to end the least defended area so that we could advance to the place we were supposed to be at the end of the first day. We missed it by half a mile. We ended up too far east and this could have caused problems the next morning. At 9 pm, we prepared our position for the night, set up our outposts and started the first night in France. I spent the first hour on outpost so I got about 5 hours of uninterrupted of sleep. By now about 100% of the company had seen all of France we ever wanted to see."
