Rachmaninov gave the world premiere of the work at the Lyric Opera House in Baltimore, Maryland, on November 7, 1934 with the Philadelphia Orchestra, conducted by Leopold Stokowski. And the same forces made the first recording, on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1934, at RCA Victor's Trinity Church Studio in Camden, New Jersey.

"Nobody played the piano like Rachmaninoff" -- Garrick Ohlsson, to me after his own fantastic performance of the d-minor Concerto with the Boston Symphony. The only pianist I would dare mention in the same breath with Rachmaninoff is Joseph Lhevinne. They graduated together from the Moscow Conservatory (Lhevinne got the piano prize because Rachmaninoff viewed himself as a composer even then).
Incredible! The piece continues with one surprise aftter another. One mood leads to the next without the listener ever aware.

A Masterpiece that puts other Variations to shame by its structure. Especially when played by its creator.

Thank you for uploading this. This is one of the many recordings I listened to at an early age growing up in the 50's, and it helped lay the foundation for a lifelong love of classical music. Great to hear it again.
I can relate to your comment completely except I didn't discover Rachmaninoff's recordings of his own compositions for piano and orchestra until the mid 60s. RCA re-issued the 78s in a 4-record set which I still have. Even though the sound quality isn't the greatest, it's still wonderful to listen to the composer play his own works.
Everything Rachmaninoff played that he wrote, he instilled a classicism a la Beethoven which distilled his every intention, IMO. No sappy, syrupy wobbling...all distinct, focused intentions, which showed how brilliant his writing was. His 2nd concerto recording is an absolute revelation. Bravo!

I love very much the sound of "old magnetic tape" between rests.
David Datiashvili There was no magnetic tape in 1934 when this was recorded. The noise is the surface noise from the record. I own a copy of this, it is a 78 RPM and my copy is much noisier. I think the person who put this up may have cleaned it up some. Another issue is the microphones of that time were at best fair.
Recorded on wax discs, there was no tape in 1934.
I have this whole thing on 78s sitting in my collection. This is a dynamite performance, Rachmaninoff was truly a master of the craft.

One of the most amazing rhapsodies on the theme of Paganini’s 24th caprice, his treatment of the subject is really highly ingenious and original, better than all previous attempts with Brahms’ version for solo piano being possibly a close second, and what more can you ask for with the composer himself playing the piano in this glorious performance.
It's delightful to listen to the composer playing his own music. I say, like a joke, that this masterpiece is the most beautiful music written by Paganini. Thanks a lot
Brilliant! People today forget that the musicologists of his time didn't think much of him-yet Rachmaninoff was hugely popular with the public. I think he is wonderful.

This was before magnetic tape! This is on 78 rpm discs!
Obviously the original recording was done with two cutting machines relayed the entire performance without stopping for side breaks. There is slight(ca. 2%) speed difference between the two machines so that the play back shows different pitch between odd and even sides. Actually even sides should be played 2 % faster to correct this(or odd sides 2% slower).
You notice this easily e.g. at 8:10 and 20:22.
Seriously? There are 11 persons that find something negative about Rachmaninoff playing one of his many magnificent compositions. I often think he plays under the tempo .. but I would never criticize Rachmaninoff's playing. Thank you for putting the recording on youtube.com.

Completely agree with you. However, I can squeeze in Var. XXIV in there. I just love the portions of virtuosity in Rachmaninoff's pieces and I think this variation really shows off the pianist's technique. Rumour has it that Rachmaninoff had trouble playing those high leaps at the beginning himself, so much so that he had to take a swig of crème de menthe. Whether it is true or not, it's safe to say it is a testament to its difficulty

Even though the sound quality isn't the greatest, it's still nice to hear SVR play his own compositions. I haven't found any modern day pianists who play his music as well as he did himself. I'm grateful Rachmaninoff recorded all four of his piano concertos and the rhapsody. He made many other recordings, too, including music rolls. He also recorded works by other composers.

@Josef Hofmann Rachmaninov rarely, if ever, performed the 3rd concerto after he heard Horowitz perform it. Actions often speak more clearly than words.

I always wondered how exactely Rachmaninov's pedal technique in Var. X ist, at the very introduction of the "Dies irae" theme. He creates a so sensational and special sound!
If I may write my belated critiques to this performance by Rachmaninoff, it's that it sounds sad and melancholy that it's hard to applause. It's like it's hard to applause at a funeral when people are sad and melancholy. And yet, you feel humbled by it.

I have heard some other pieces on YT recorded on 24 Dec of some year and they were done in a hurried way--let's get home for Christmas-- but Rach and Stok seem to broken the 24 Dec jinx.

I am not a huge fan of the 18th variation (fairly unpopular position I am sure...the 15th,19th and 24th are my jams), but very few pianists perform the 18th variation as well as SVR does on this recording. Voicing, pedaling, dynamics etc... are just extraordinary!
Yes!!! I'm glad there are some who like variations apart from the XVIII. There's something seemingly revolutionary-sounding about the 19th variation with its jazz-like quality. The 24th needs no introduction with its notorious virtuosity, with the legend of Rachmaninoff himself needing a swig of crème de menthe to calm his nerves just to be able to play the variation.
@@laiyinquan8355 Indeed! Nikolai Lugansky performs the 15th variation in a manner that is hard to match IMO. I love the the pizzicato of the orchestra and the staccato piano playing in the 19th and the subtle variations Rachmaninov uses within the 19th variation. I had also read SVR had to take a drink to calm his nerves for the 24th variation haha!! And we know how GREAT a pianist he was!!!

The Great Rachmaninof was preceded by publicity of an aparatus to clean teeth, and interrupted twice by others that I have instantly forgotten. I think You Tube should avoid this practice in the case of noble music. We are just a few.
