  • Built between 1873- 1877 this stunning 145 year old Gothic Victorian-Era Farmhouse sits abandoned. Expropriated by the government for the land the last owners lived here for 70 years before being kicked out. The house is listed on the heritage designation list but with the government as its owner its unlikely that anyone will ever live here again! The home has sat abandoned since about 2012 and is slowly falling into disrepair.

    My first impression was that cubby could be a laundry chute, but I didn't see it coming from upstairs where you would think the laundry should come from. Stay safe! Love from South Carolina 🇺🇸

    Great explore. Beautiful house. I really hope they don’t demolish it. It’s a travesty that they painted that beautiful woodwork during the last renovation. I live in an old house (1904) and one of the reasons I purchased it was because the beautiful woodwork was not painted. It’s hard to get back once you do. Great find.

    Certainly restorable if someone gets at it soon. It’s certainly worth it. It looks like someone is still doing some basic exterior work. Grass has been cut recently. I hope this gets the attention it deserves. I could see from the upper window a top soil hill which implies there’s some new subdivision work being done down the road. I hope this isn’t going to be demolished for ‘progress’.

    I just love these old Victorian homes this one especially because it has all the gingerbread on the out side still intact and not rotting away. The brick work is amazing with the yellow and red brick work! Thank you for bringing this video to us , you don't find houses like this anymore. Great video and thanks, be safe out there on you travels and next adventure! 👍 😀

    I think those two staircases might have originally been a single one that was split into 2 so the house could rented as a duplex. Maybe the people renovating were bringing it back to one residence.

    • @Newt1981
      @Newt1981 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can hear how he says the stairs are tight. These would've for sure been servant's stairs, because they made them tighter and steeper. The broad, 'grand' staircase would've been for the residents (Masters) of the house.
      Betting it was close off with a door or something similar to keep the servants more closed off to the house, and then it was opened up later on when servants stopped being a thing.
      It's a good theory! But based on what he said about the staircase, they were always two different sets of stairs. Makes even more sense as it would've been straight into the kitchen like he said.
      If you have a peek at other house tours with houses made in that era that's how it was.
      The 2nd Empire Strikes Back is a channel here on youtube where he's renovating a house with that type of setup, with a servant's quarters and stairs, and he explains the layout of the house. Very interesting!

    The holes in the floor may be where they were trying to put vents since they installed a new furnace in the basement. This house should definitely be saved and restored. It's oddly arranged but still a sturdy home.

    Plastic on the windows is usually done to help weatherize it in the winter some people put it on the outside instead of the inside. The plaque may have been used for the family crest. Love that house.

    What an incredibly beautiful house. Such talented craftsmanship with the bricks and arches and incredible latticework. They certainly don’t make them like this anymore. This home NEEDS to be saved and restored. Those two tiny rooms off of the living room were a wee bit odd. That strange cubbyhole that was open to below I doubt was a laundry chute, I doubt they had washing machines when that house was built. Thanks for showing this great house. I sincerely hope it doesn’t meet the wrecking ball.

  • @yssubed2
    @yssubed2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I expect the two staircases side by side were because the servants upstairs was totally separated from the family upstairs. You commented on the strange doorway. That wasn’t original as it had no trim. My home is somewhat similar with two staircases and two doors from the kitchen area to a side porch. It was reasonably common to completely separate family and servant areas.

    Did you know why, it has more red brick than yellow brick. Red brick came from Toronto but yellow brick had to be brought in from far, like London, ON. Wealthy people in GTA had yellow brick homes, so to show a bit of wealth houses in the gta had yellow brick accents. Yellow brick was a symbol of wealth in gta and red brick was a symbol of wealth in London, ON. In London however people did not accent the yellow brick houses with red brick like they did in gta. You can recognize the area the house is from by the brick work, if it's old. My dad told me this and I feel it's truth.

    • @yssubed2
      @yssubed2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct. Different areas had different colour clay. so Toronto brickworks produced red brick. Much of the area around Toronto had yellow clay - certainly eastern York Region and north Durham region.

    It is sad it was painted a dull grey. It probably had vibrant, beautiful, and flamboyant before the paint job. If I bought that house, I would strip the paint of the window frames, door frames, and doors and apply a clear coat and see if I could find out whether the house had wallpaper and if I could find similar wallpaper to put inside it. A thing is, a victorian house cannot be improved on. So, any renovation will be a crappy job.

  • @Newt1981
    @Newt1981 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    That hole you were confused about in the wall where you guessed dumbwaiter I'm pretty sure you were bang on. That would've been the kitchen like you said, because of the servant's stairs, so it makes sense it would've gone from the kitchen and the servant could use it to bring it upstairs somewhere. Hard to say just due to not knowing the full layout/floor plan where that would line up to upstairs though.
    My only other guess was laundry shoot since it's next to the basement stairs.

    I’m surprised that the basement isn’t flooded being the sump pump isn’t working. I thought at first that it was what we call a Michigan basement, which means dirt walls and floor and super creepy, but I see this basement has stone/concrete walls and floors- basement is still creepy though!

    that "shelving" as you call it, is actually a plate rail. Wainscotting and chair says that room was the diningroom. The weird little cupboard you thought was a dumb-waiter, is likely a laundry chute to the basement.

    I agree with you; old homes should remain in the original style. A lil history trivia …The late 60’s and 70’s , during the energy crisis , tacky dropped ceilings came into play , to keep the hesting bills down, and the horrid cheesy paneling thing that people somehow found attractive still blows my mind; I think people were trying to avoid having to re-paint .
    The popcorn ceilings were probably my most hated feature of those times! Oh they are a MESS to get rid of!!
    The holes in the floor might have been copper thieves searching for copper. Or floor vents!
    Plastic over windows was yet another way to try to keep the heating bills down.
    I was as kid in the mid 70’s living in a very COLD climate, and our Dad kept the heat at 62 during the day & 60 at night! I remember feeling COLD all winter long!!!! Brrrrr!
    Oh And the national speed limit was 55 on interstates, again to save energy during the energy crisis. Google Sammy Hagar’s song “ I can’t drive 55!” I enjoy your exploring! Thanks for sharing your vids!

      THANK YOU for writing this properly.
      I cringe, literally gringe & blood pressure rises every time I see someone write
      "would of" instead of would've.
      People - would've is called a contraction.
      It is two words combined to one: would have = would've, As goes for: could've, should've.
      IT'S NOT would of, should of, could of. It doesn't even make sense using "of" like that!!
      GAH!!!!!
      Proper grammar & language is dying, and seeing it happen is shortening my life. 🤣🤣😂😂
