I went to and graduated from Danvers High (class of 81) when Mark was there. He was only an acquaintance of mine (you know an occasional “what’s up” kinda thing). What I remember was he was a quiet kinda gentle giant kinda guy, but the biggest kid in school no doubt, excellent athlete and football player of course and he would eat 3 lunches like it was no big deal. He had the size already in high school and it did not surprise me at all that he had the football career that he had. Awesome guy, great to have just been there. My brother Phil was on the football team so he could tell you more but yeah, super cool.
My grandfather was a Giants season ticket holder for as long as I can remember while growing up as a kid in New Jersey. He even took me to a few games:^) I always remember how everyone used to talk about Mark Bavaro(humble, a workhorse, class-act and a hell of a football player!). New York/Jersey Loved him and I'm sure those of us that remember his play still do. I sure as hell do! I wanted to be just like him when I was a kid! Thanks for being a guy the kids of my day could look up to w/pride!
The lasting image of Mark Bavaro has to be him dragging Ronnie Lott and half the 49er's defense in a December 1986 Monday Night Football game. That was unbelievable.
I love this guy! He was the complete embodiment of those tough, physical, grinding New York Giants teams from 1985-1990. What a DOMINATING TE he was. Best in the game from 1985-1990, and one of the best blocking TE's to ever play the game. I'm so glad I got a chance to watch him in his prime. #89 should be retired by The New York Giants.
I agree that he was an outstanding TE. I don't know if I'd put him at top 5 history. I do believe his overall game is better than Gonzales and Gaite, because they don't do much blocking. Ditka: he blocked. Winslow: caught enough passes to excuse his lack of QB defending. Ozzie Newsome: one of those golden TEs. Jay Novacek: a thorn in my side, as I am a G-Men fan. Whitten: from the same darned thorny bush. Shannon Sharpe, too. Am I missing a Packer or a Steeler? But gimme Bavaro over all of 'em!!
@@courylanders4142 matter of fact there where quite a few players in the 70's 80's 90's from opposite teams who would gather around in the middle of the field after the game and pray how sad that it's died out since T bow did it now they take a knee not to glorify God but for politics
Many players prayed on the field during Tebows time too, but the media was out to get him after his pro life commercial which I call a pro choice commercial. He was celebrating his mothers choice. The pro abortion crowd (not the same as the pro choice crowd) were angered by his celebration of his mothers choice so they went to mocking him ever since.
@@stevenbrown6720 Tim Tebow has a winning record as a QB, including a playoff win at the tender age of 24. If you spend time researching you would see how rare it is for a QB under 25 having a winning record. Even some of the greats did not start having a winning record until after they turned 25.
Speak softly and carry a (really big) stick!! Anyone who's a Giants fan, know how lucky we all were! That image of you dragging Ronnie Lott down the field for 20 yards (1986)... we'll all take that to our graves!. Thank you Mark!
As a lifelong Redskins fan, I think Mark Bavaro was one of the best tight ends we ever had to face in the division. Jay Novacek in Dallas was the other. A decade ago, it was Jeremy Shockey. Now I think it's Jason Witten.
Dave Casper , Russ Francis , Todd Christensen , Ozzie Newsome , Kellen Winslow and Mark Bavaro...yes Casper did do some blocking at TE but not like Bavaro did and that's what made him so special ( dual-threat ) he was a tough SOB like Bill Parcells said unfortunately that's what caused him to have such a short career
Mark Bavaro and Kellen Winslow were scary in their own way. Winslow changed the game, Bavaro may be outdated because of the rules now. A guy with a broken jaw cannot play anymore. I wish I had that drive.

I can’t bring up any tight end without my dad saying “He’s no Mark Bavaro!”.... Never fails.

He did the Tebow back in the 80's and was the first to pray on the 50 yard after the game. And no one ever may a big deal of it.
There were some players that did B4 Bavaro. But you are right, nobody cared.

Tebow couldnt play qb.

Parcells loved this guy.
Even Parcells didn’t f__k, with this dude..... that says it all right there !!!!!
Redskins fan from New Jersey in the 80s. I was in ahhh a this guy as a kid . He did everything right
If I were building a football team he’d be my TE!
You need players like Bavaro on your football team. They're tough, hard nosed, players, who will be there during good and bad times.
Thank you, Mark!

I wish I could meet him. My Uncle went to visit his parents. We didn't find out we were related until the early 80's.

I'm no Giant fan. Bavaro had great hands and was the best blocking tight end in history. He's HOF to me.
The best TE in Giants history.

And he hated the Eagles.
Gawd, I loved Bavaro!
Italians loved him lol

All true, but Mark was awesome! Just his career was to short.
Best ever!!!!!
He’s Italian
Best ever
Wow! Didn't know that. Probably because he rarely spoke. He let his play do the talking. He never brought any attention unto himself.
Man da eagles had our # then and they still have it 😡
