I think that something about Mogoon that people overlook are his backgrounds. He's obviously a character artist, but most of his illustrations have a simple, yet competent background that enriches the overal composition. In short, it's not just the way he draws characters, but how he implements them in a composition with a background that adds some context.

I have a feeling that you're not that much older than me, but seeing your dedication, consistency and passion for art. I can see that I have no rights to feel bad, I may have drawn nonstop since the very start of school "preschool" I only drew mindlessly without trying to understand nor learn anything, meanwhile you worked a lot more harder than me and actually tried to understand those around you and learn everything you could! (9:33 - 9:58) drawing without guidelines/underlines or simple shapes can actually be built up to through practice, 2 years ago i actually stopped using guidelines, i kinda just throw myself out of that comfort zone once I saw kim jung gi drawing without them, it took some getting used to, and i wasnt very good at making cohesive images without them, but as i taught myself a deep level of understanding of the fundamentals and trained myself to reflect that knowledge intuitively, my drawing without guidelines got better. i can now create characters with pretty accurate and cohesive structure in scenes with decently accurate perspective

I am glad to know a professional artist is also very analytical. I thought many times; I am too logical when it comes to my work, or, I plan too much, why can't I be like the other artists that just "feel it". Although I am an artist, I defiantly use my left side of my brain more so I can't help but analyze and plan out every aspect. It is nice to know I am not the only one :)

I am also very logical in my approach to art, which generally makes drawing more difficult, In some ways. Since I have to fundamentally understand all the inner workings of something before I am able to draw it correctly. Since I can’t just look at shapes and create the same thing like a lot of other creatives.
However, this approach also makes you much more keen to detail and form. And adds a new layer of detail to your work where you can hone in on so many things that other people don’t.
I don't believe you actually differ from many artists. Using fundamentals in a logical/analytical way is key to understanding how things work, planning every aspect is the reason idea boards exist (detailed ones or not). Though you are unique as every artist is, separating yourself and calling yourself defiant for the way many artist approach creating is a bit naïve of you. Being technical is not about the way you create, but the way you practice and improve as an artist. Even those who free flow their art need that foundation to be good at it. Though I don't doubt you are an amazing artist, no one art style is completely the same, nor do most of them just "feel" how to create masterpieces or anatomy (etc). I hope you understand in no way am I trying to offend you but just explain that you are very much not the only one nor alone, and that many artist are defiant of many things. Learn to support all different kinds of styles, try to be humble and you will see beauty in all of them. I hope your day or night is lovely! 😊
@@spoony8485 I agree with your comment to a point. I myself am someone who usually just free flows my art, not thinking too much. Though I am very able to watch my details. Not every person who has a loose art style, in fact most actually can focus on small details but choose not to due to style preference. I do agree that with "beginner artist" there may be this difference, but the longer and more time you spend refining your art, the more many tend to stray from realism or complete technicality as their base. Many artist crave that style, many don't. It is in bad taste to assume many artist that have rough sketching or creation styles do not know how to look or add detail as well as you or any other might. Art is about being unique yes, but fundamentals are the true core as art imitates life with either real or surrealistic concepts. You are unique, but not just because you can see detail, and add many complexities to your art, these are fundamentals, you are unique because you choose to seek that technicality in your work. I'm sure your art is beautiful, but you are not unique for the fact you see what most artists need to see in order to create art, your choice in the fact that you want your art a certain way is what hakes you unique, it is not the technicality that makes one unique, but the way they use it. Many can not just create by looking at something and copying it, you need to study it, that is why study exists, to learn how it works. @@Milos_spac3 I think you misinterpreted my comment a lil. When I say details, I don’t mean details in the visual sense, like sitting down and adding “details” to your art for 5 hours. I mean details in proper anatomical forms, or perspective, or composition ect. Like, for example, how you can immediately pick up on whether a hand or joint is out of place (and whether it was intentional to the style or not, too). Or noticing when something is out of perspective in reference to the rest of the image. Stuff like that.
Obviously, creatives learn and do know this stuff, and can notice it too. But it isn’t nessicary that you learn them in order to draw something “correctly” (or at least in a way that looks correct to you). But when you think logically, you HAVE to learn these things, or else your art won’t function and will always look incorrect to you. At least in comparison.
For example, alot of tutorials teach drawing things in simple forms, like cylinders and boxes. A lot of people I’ve spoken to that do art also view things this way, in how they like to simplify the forms before drawing them in order to keep them proportionate. This has never actually worked for me, unless I know the underlying details. Such as, I need to know the size and distance that certain limbs are, or else I will draw them too long or too short. I need to know where the muscles are, so I can keep the form consistent. Like, unless I am explicitly told how something works and all of its inner workings I will draw it wrong. But, this makes your art both more consistent and more structured, once you finally get it. Like hands, for me. I can draw hands pretty consistently and pretty accurately because I studied them in depth. I learned the placements of everything and how those things connect. Their size in relation to other parts, so I can draw them consistently and notice when it’s not correct.
Like I said before, it’s not that creatives don’t know this or don’t learn these things, it’s just that, as a logical thinker, you HAVE to know them. You can’t get by with purely referencing other work. You have to know the inner workings or it will never look right.

I've been drawing for 4 years now too, I thought I was serious before, but I realized I wasn't. I didn't want to study, I didn't want to practice, I just wanted to draw. Which is OK, don't get me wrong, but that's the mindset of a beginner, and I was stuck there for 3 years. I, around 6 months ago, decided I wanted to study, and I'm improving fast, but I realize I can be faster and better the more I do it. So it's really encouraging to see artist like you who speak about learning rather then just teaching it, sort of like talking to other students.
Dumb question how do you study art do you just draw what you see?
@@Aniologi Yes I would like to study too but I am not sure what and how should I study. More so how exactly and what should I do to maximize learning without burning out.
@@Aniologi Find something you think you need to improve on, For example, let's say you wanna get better at drawing the head. Learn the structure and how to simplify it with simple shapes (ex. loomis method). Now find a reference and draw it while applying what you learned by simplifying it first before applying the details.

Yes and no, the first thing I learned to draw was the face like, realistic portraits. And for years I only knew how to draw the face even when drawing anime, I can't draw anything from the neck down but last year I started working on my fundamentals and anatomy and I'm still currently working on it.

@@niroxiousreminds me a lot of how I was when I started. Used to just draw faces and ignore practicing bodies. Started traditional but made a ton of progress when I switched to digital. A few months of progress on an ipad outpaced several years of pen and paper by a substantial magnitude.

I have two point to learn how to draw.
Draw a lot. Once a day at least something.
Observe in a obsessive way everything, always. Observe what you do, what surrounds you, what you like, how it's made. In every situation. Doing this you'll study drawing 24/24 7/7 even in dreams.
Oh the third step. Don't stop.

A major part of creating art happens in the mind. All the planning n prev experience need to be gathered in your head n applied to your current artwork 🎉
I also learned to draw on my own, and only recently I've started going to art classes. The teacher is pretty nice and kind. She's helped me a lot through these months. One thing that she taught me is that this is what makes you different or unique. It's that you keep going even though you don't know if it's right or wrong. You don't have somebody telling you what you're doing wrong and how to do it better. And you kept drawing to reach this point. It takes longer but that just shows how much you like what you're doing. So if somebody that doesn't have the money or has other personal reasons to not take art classes, it's fine. You just have to keep going. Don't let the idea of "if I somebody had teached me this or that, I would've drawn so much better" stop you from doing what you love. Believe in yourself and keep going and someday you'll achieve your goal :)

Mogoon is a wonderful artist and deserves praise and recognition but I find his drawing hard to read and overly complicated. Sometimes less is more and more is too much but to each his own. Thanks for the video ! You rock !

I would really like to see a video about lighting and shadows. I want to know what colors and what blending modes you used in order to make coloring so fast. Coloring clothes is pain especially when theyre complicated _(thanks Genshin Impact for overcomplicating your character's designs, so every single artist wants to hara-kiri themselves)_ since I am coloring every single part individually, which slows the heck out of me. The best way to improve, is to draw consistently and with a clear goal in mind overall. Drawing casually without thought is good for relaxation and to hone one's basic pen skills and confidence in one's drawing technique, but to truly improve one's artistic foundations and understanding of complex topics such as composition and character (as in soul and vibrance), you have to actively study those topics and improve them one by one, step by step.
Typically that is what art school / teaching provides, it's not so much just learning the techniques, it's more so that the environment itself pushes you to practice with ambition and consistency that you otherwise wouldn't have sought out on your own through casual sketching.
8:25 all three of those examples are 3-point perspective, because the horizon line is not at eye level. If you were to draw them in true perspective, those vertical lines would also converge on a vanishing point below the horizon line, just at a much further distance than in the 3-point. I think the point came across but it would help to have an accurate example.
Also, what causes the distortion is the field of view, and thats done by bringing the vanishing points closer together or further part out of frame, and not based off the number of vanishing points. For example, in the 2-point, if you were to spread those VP’s further, it would reduce the distortion on the cube.

I mostly do portraits and anime, but when it comes to full body that's where the struggle is 😂
well it comes down to drawing alot if u want to get good fas at least draw 3 hours a day it not that much wen u get into the time flys. some people even draw 8 to 10 hors a day
you likely dont draw the body enough choosing to stick to the upper half because thats the part you feel safe drawing. I can draw full body people all right not were i want but alright but Im terrible at drawing buildings, cars, weapons and so on because i dont draw them enough.
4 years is a reasonable time to get gud at most things. There's not-really-a-rule of 10.000 hours of practicing/learning to be good enough at anything. If we use the standard 8hrs of work per day, it's gonna be 3 years. But it applies when you actually practice+learning, during my experience (in both uni and work place) many people they just draw without thinking. They dont break down the stuff they doing into fundamentals. I called it the mindless process which i try to avoid always. The struggle you feel in most cases should be the result of this mindless process, where you just draw what you like and come up in your head but dont try to think about how, what, why, where etc... questions. That lead to many years of doing stuff without actual grow
The effect of time spent on any skill can be affected by how focused you are in your studies. I can definitely see someone getting this good in 4 years if they really put in serious and concentrated study into it.

The traditional fundamentals of art are Line, Shape, Color, Value, Space, Composition, Form. Form requires an understanding of two or more of these fundamentals.

Could you perhaps make a video about how you color and shade your drawings too? I've been struggling with this forever and I really like the way your drawings look, so maybe you can show to us how you do this?
The perspective is very important, even for characters! It may not seem like a big difference, but it will make the characters feel more real and present in the scene. For color and shading the best idea is to copy from the artworks that you like. Try to replicate the same effect. Watching speed paintings may be useful too.

I was able to get a grasp of DRawing perspective using the box method but I'm not struggling doing the detail in drawing the body and head
Coloso is pretty good, but I wish they had more quality courses with good English voice over. But honestly, there are some amazing learning materials on YT these days, like better quality than many paid courses. It's just that it may be difficult to find them. A lot of it is in Japanese, too (if you're after anime-style stuff).

Some are tutorials, some show the process. Hide is great for anatomy and posing, Marco Bucci for color and fundamentals. Once you watch a lot of Japanese stuff, YT will start recommending similar content and maybe you will discover more. Good luck!

That's the reason I don't want to take some of those courses because I have learning disabilities and ADHD and I don't think I could learn very well from someone talking a foreign language and me having to read subtitles pausing it every couple minutes. Usually when I'm doing video courses I like to play it at two times speed because a lot of courses are like 40 hours long and I couldn't do that if they weren't speaking English.

No hate, I just wanted to say that it's not really normal people vs prodigies. It's more like intuitive vs technical artist, the intuitive artists can usually do anatomy and stuff easier without guidelines or shapes... but that also means usually shapes are more confusing and it makes drawing buildings etc more difficult. Where as the opposite usually applies to technical artists.

Pretty much, each person has their own approach to things, no right or wrong. Doing case studies like this helps u understand different methods and apply it to your own style if u see fit, just pick the parts that suits your own method rather than trying to do the exact same thing.

Initially i wanted to write a comment about 4:58 (why boku no pico) but now that i seen the full video and scrolled trough the comments i felt like i was going to be that one stupid kid who always makes fun of everything so i wanna say thank you for giving me motivation and also keep up the good work not just in art but in video editing as well cause it was amazing, and to the people who has any project in progress but they feel like they gonna quit just DON'T i know its easy to say but trust me, if you do something consistently than you will be good at it eventually whether its art or anything you wanna do.
Who are your favourite artists in terms of illustration?
Is this suitable for someone who wants to learn how to draw? Like, I really like his style and I want a course who's organized. Going online, some of what I saw, free ones, are really random. And most of the times you need to go from one person to another etc to learn one technique. I saw people saying that this course is a great approach for beginners. But beginners who's trying to learn his style or beginners at all? Should I buy it, is even worth it? (Still cheaper than Marc Brunet's course)
What scares me a little is by him explaining things in Korean. Sure, we have subtitles, but he's even using photoshop in korean as well.. There's probably some time that I would lose indeed, trying to figure it out where's the thin' he clicked.

5:50 I’m not sure why others have a hard time writing a believable character. As a writer who also draws, it’s comes to me so easily. Character design is where I struggle
if you're surrounded by only one kind of people, you know no other one, and it' extremely hard to imagine something completely new, so all the characters turn out to be bland and boring copycats of eaachother
And also, it comed down to the level of writing skills, kinda, because character creators are essentially trying to get a people to believe in a thing that doesnt exist, like a magitian, but without rabbits and pigeons

I struggle with digital painting, I can't understand the layer formats, I can only draw digitally painting how I do traditionally, then removing any muddy areas by painting on a separate layer with some harsher lines.
I'm just that antisocial to the point I don't really know how to describe myself, so is basically impossible to me to imagine people and describe them. Buuut I have analyzed tons of videogames and anime characters 💀
@@shaii5526 Just some ideas below to try help :)
Try thinking about the traits, mannerisms that your either weary of, don't like and list them down like loud, snobby, profanity, violence, bullying, tattoo's, messy,dancing etc..
Then do the list on the things you like about people and what makes you comfortable not worrying about others thoughts like people sharing videos, cats, magic, science, silence etc. I might have listed some in the like where you don't like and vice versa which is all good they were just examples to try help you on the way :)
Then list your fav gaming and anime characters traits and the ones you hate too for whatever reasons i.e poorly written, OP, unrealistic, cool or ugly hair style, design.
Then have some fun mixing the traits from the list above. It will be easy for you to see when characters have been copied too much since you've analyzed character traits from games and anime.

I try doing these Coloso classes but the player never wants to load. I've bought Moogun's class ages ago but I'm never able to watch the videos...
So drawing by instincts don't work? I don't even use boxes or circles before drawing. I just draw what pose that comes to mind then see how my line would turn out then plan LoL. It turns out fine so I am happy with it. Tho I do think I should start drawing with guidelines

Question how do you draw semi realistic hair?
So I'm checking out courses for Mogoon and I'm wondering if I need Photoshop or can I use any digital art program to study from him? Also, I'm not sure where I am on the art spectrum I have my decent days and terrible days so I don't know if I even should take his class if I want to learn from beginner to pro. Are there teachers that start from beginner?
They start from beginner to pro, and as long the program u are using have the same tools they use, u are fine. I guess

I think a lot of people get the wrong impression in how professionals do their art work.
Most "speedpaints" you see on TH-cam start from a sketch. How did they make the sketch tho? Who knows, it could be an old one 4 years ago they touched up... But they spent like 2 hours designing that messy sketch, iterating and "finding" it. They rarely include that experimentation and exploration in these videos, perhaps as it's "boring" to many.
