Watch late night wars, this was a great joke and keeps continuity of Jimmy’s opinion on Leno. As far as I know, jimmy has been an ally to Conan and has called out Leno on his hypocrisy and false promises right to his face.
Jay Leno promised he would hand the tonight show to Conan but turned out to be a lie... And Kimmel called him out for it.

For those that are unaware, the joke about Conan was more of a dig to Jay Leno. Kimmel hated the fact that Leno took back the tonight show from Conan and was pretty pissed when it happened. Kimmel roasted Leno in a monologue shortly after it happened.
He more than roasted Leno in a monologue. During the time when things went down (when NBC had said Conan had to move to 12:07 am to make room for Jay's show to take the 11: 37 am slot again, and Conan refused, and things were pending on the official exit of Conan and return of Jay to hosting The Tonight Show), Jay had Kimmel on his soon to be cancelled 10:00 show for a segment that was a question and answer thing of some sort, and Kimmel answered every single question with a harsh dig at Leno for taking back The Tonight Show from Conan after only seven after promising and leaving it to him. It was an epic thing thing of beauty. It wasn't planned or anticipated by Leno. Leno was a deer caught in the head lights while it was happening, just quetly going along with it. It was surprising he didn't cut the segment as it was on his own show and he got slaughtered for his perceived shitty deed.
@@MCross-xg9ss yes I remember that. Thank you for reminding me. If I recall, wasn’t it done by video feed? Can’t believe it’s been a little over 11-12? yes since it happened. Ran into Conan at a Comic Con in San Diego once a few years back and he’s got to be the nicest celebrity I’ve ever met. Conan is a national treasure, at least in my books.

That's cool that you got to meet Conan. I'm a huge fan and he's one of a very few celebrities who I actually would like to meet. I have heard that he's known to generally be a really nice guy in person. In fact, I recall an interview with Andy Richter where he talked about how Conan can be so warm and gracious with fans wherever he runs into them, but that he, Andy, has a very limited capacity for that, just that he has a very finite amount of ability to be "on" and friendly toward strangers who want his attention as fans, not in a mean or selfish way, just that his natural disposition doesn't make him good at doing it much or at the drop of a hat, unlike someone like Conan.
Kimmel also hated Leno during his initial years when he couldn’t book Hollywood guests simply Leno was jerk about celebrities not to appear on Kimmel if in LA. Watch Bill Simmons interview with Matt Damon, and he talks about the origins of Kimmel-Damon feud.

Iirc, Fallon never does it right when he does the segment either. He just places the note under the flap of the envelope and, like, licks it or whatever, without actually putting the note inside the envelope, and sets each one down loose like that.
I knew they couldn't do this without a reference to the Conan dustup!

For many years Jimmy Kimmel has had a "feud" going on with Matt Damon; he insults him, makes jokes about him, etc. It's all in good fun though. They don't really hate each other of course. It's just comedy. But it's been going on for so long it's a defining part of the Jimmy Kimmel Show. Those of us 30 and older really appreciated that Conan joke. I'm still with Conan, and Kimmel had some great burns for Leno during that era, especially during Leno's 10 at 10 segment. Can't find the footage now, and I'm sad Conan lost the franchise, but damn was that comedic gold. It was like a lightning strike that lasted two weeks. Something funnier every night til it was over.

You are so funny Jimmy as were your thank you notes. My dad lived through the depression and always bought me and my siblings cracker jacks when we were children, they were not my favorite, if I'm honest about it, but the toy was a nice surprise. He was a wonderful father, RIP dad and mom.
