  • Kathak one of the eight forms of Indian classical dances, originated from India. The term Kathak is derived from the Vedic Sanskrit word Katha meaning "story", and kathaka in Sanskrit means "he who tells a story", or "to do with stories.
Kathak is found in three distinct forms, named after the cities (Gharnas) where the Kathak dance tradition evolved - Jaipur, Banaras and Lucknow.

Many people in the comment section has asked about the absence of Raigarh Gharana in the video.
As far as my research for making this video I knew that the main Gharanas of Kathak are - Lucknow, Benaras and Jaipur. *The Raigarh Gharana is not accepted by many people as a separate Gharana rather it is considered a 'Shaili' (genre). Also the Raigarh Gharana of Kathak is an amalgamation of the 3 older gharanas, thus not considered as a separate Gharana due to the lack of its own style and unique features. Although with passing time, teaching and popularity it is being accepted by many.*

Lucknow gharana is plenty complex . It is the oldest one and foot work and complexity has been as important in it as Jaipur one. Jaipur Gharana was started by a member of Lucknow Gharana main family. And so was Banaras gharana. The respective 2 Gharana are known by what their teacher's personal dancing style specialization was. They were all relatives of Birju maharaj family.
I had read the whole history of the family and it's branches once upon a time and their names , not that I remember them now. Just the summary of it. Source: The history as taught by the Prayag Sangeet Samitii.
Personally I love Jaipur Gharana. Although, I do not find Banaras gharana- probably because I never liked how Gopi Kishan danced and just cannot get over it.

Um with due respect when I gave the exam the theory one i studied about it and wrote about it as well....tho you are correct it's a fusion of three gharanas but it has its own history....like the thumri it was enhanced by nawab vajid Ali Shah who was a practitioner of raigar gharan as per my knowledge.....but you guys know better........🙏🙏

Initial 3 years I got training in Jaipur Gharana and now from the last 3 years I am learning the Lucknow Gharana format.
Initially it's a bit hard to adapt to other gharana since the emphasis to different aspects of the dance form is different in each Gharana.
But the experience of learning Kathak in different Gharanas is simply wonderful and brings in a sense of completeness😇😇.

Kathak was originally temple dance(400bce) dedicated to gods also called as devdasi , later it evolved into story telling and still remained as temple dance dedicated to Radha Krishna mostly performed by vaishnavism sect.
After mughals arrived kathak was transformed to mujra the dance of prositicute and was culturally appropriate d later got diluted finally lost during British era when all dance forms stopped.
After independence kathak was bought back by birju maharaj in it orginal form and I hope people continue performing Kathak in its original form rather than diliuted version it would be huge disrespect to art otherwise.
