- Kathak is one of the main genres of ancient Indian classical dance and is traditionally regarded to have originated from the travelling bards of North India referred as Kathakars or storytellers. These Kathakars wandered around and communicated legendary stories via music, dance and songs quite like the early Greek theatre. The genre developed during the Bhakti movement, the trend of theistic devotion which evolved in medieval Hinduism. The Kathakars communicate stories through rhythmic foot movements, hand gestures, facial expressions and eye work. This performing art that incorporates legends from ancient mythology and great Indian epics, especially from the life of Lord Krishna became quite popular in the courts of North Indian kingdoms. Three specific forms of this genre that is three gharanas (schools), which mostly differ in emphasis given to footwork versus acting, are more famous namely, the Jaipur gharana, the Benaras gharana and the Lucknow gharana.

I got emotional during her ghungroo puja ...similarly my guru ji offered me ghungroo when i was only 3years old ..when i grew little older he got heavenly abode ...i don't know much about kathak ..but whenever i wear ghungroo my soul dance ...

This is what we called true learning. The process itself is the result there is no goals to achieve. In today's education we have lost this meaningfullness of life. We have became just sheep following blindly. We don't know what we doing where we are going. I'm feeling sad we have lost the beauty of it.

I learnt Kathak as child in year 1 and 2, then left. I was lost in the world somewhere but finding this video and listening to it brought back my memories. I want to start learning this dance form again

I feel myself so bad that in childhood thought boring about presentation of Indian classical as boring!! I regret it now, we must have shown interest in learning and appreciating it. The another thing is how my guru touched my feet and tied ghungru for the very first time when I started Bharatnatyam
I remember my guru tying my gungurus . It was hecking painful . N just my first stage performance. She wanted to make sure it won’t came undone while dancing. Never asked her to tie my gungurus or belt . I m odissi dancer.
