For the past 10 years I've been gardening and learning how to save seeds and grow from seed instead of buying plants from the store. I've also found that I can grow a lot of different types of fruits and vegetables from the farmers market produce I buy. My garden is abundant and my seeds are heirloom and naturalized for my climate by saving the best seed from those plants. Saving seed just involves getting the seeds from the ripest fruit and making sure you know how they are best saved. I'm glad to read so many stories of people doing this.

The reason you learn to garden this year is so that it is well, a learning year. You have to learn how to grow, harvest, and collect seeds for your next year's crop. It is actually easy, but I say that now bc I have been doing it for a few years and it is practice that makes it easier.

Years ago Monsanto cloned seeds and patented them…then if those plants happened to grow in other farms Monsanto would sue the farmer. The seeds would only last one season which made the farmers buying cloned seeds every year which was pricey…in India years ago there was many self unaliving farmers due to cost…sounds like Monsanto is at it again.

I was in India back then and it goes deeper than just seed as the farmers were forced to use Monsanto weed 'prevention' chemicals to. They ended up with much lower crop yields and yes many un alived as a result.

One of the reasons the GREAT IRISH POTATO FAMINE happened was all the farmers used the same type of potato. Because there was no diversity, when a blight came along, every potato was wiped out. IF they had used some potatoes from South America , Mexico, or the United States, the blight would not have hurt them so badly. Europe is doing the same thing again. Sad.

Monsanto had done this in many 3rd world countries. Threatened with a lawsuit and financial ruin, the victims are allowed to sign a contract requiring them to use only Monsanto GMO seeds from then on. The GMO seeds are expensive, and many farmers end up bankrupt anyway.

I was recently given some tomatoes before mine were ready in my garden. Those that were given to me tasted bland so I haven't eaten anymore. Those tomatoes are still sitting on my counter in the same condition as the day my friend gave them to me 2 weeks ago. My tomatoes from the garden are tasty, full of flavor and only are fresh for a few days after picking. This tells me that those first tomatoes are grown from GMO seeds. I'm not going to put them in my compost or feed to my chickens. Those are going in the trash pickup bin.

Commercially produced toms, Q's, strawberries , etc are not grown in soil, so that is why they have no flavor.
Commercial tomatoes are bred for resistance to bruising and uniform size. Flavor, color, and tenderness are way less important because if you can't get them to market looking good, nobody will buy, no matter how good they taste.
Also, they're picked green and treated with ethelene gas to turn them pinkish red just before they get to the store.
They're also irradiated afaik.
All countries need to stpallowing patents on food entirely.

As a farmer, engineer, and US patent holder, I'll say US patent law is broken. To me it seems they would allow the patenting the wheel! We must stop gene modification, the seeds control, and more must be stopped! Keep up great work!
It is getting more important every day in the whole world to plant our own food by using heirloom seeds and save the seeds to ensure we can keep producing our own food.
While I totally agree, if these changes become a law, will you still doing it, walking thin line between freedom and 16*10 ft concrete room with 4 other "cell mates" ? Talk is cheap, every other action has its consequences...
I am in the US. I found that a lot of the seeds I bought this season didn't grow at all. Much of what I have in my garden is volunteers from seed from last year that sprouted on their own. I am worried about next year to tell the truth.
Save your own seeds and try to get some from other gardeners.
@@monicali2608 I do save my seeds but have yet to trade them. I didn't get any ambrosia melons this year which peeves me off. I do have some nice water melons growing. I am not much of a farmer to tell the truth. My brother passed away he looked in on our mom who lived on his property in a small house that I remodeled for her. So I had to move back to care for mom. Brother was a mechanic who stored vehicles and parts on his property so I don't really know what is in the ground. It is a sandy loam so should grow most things. So far the best have been melons and cucumbers and tomatoes but the tomatoes have been small this year.

Spring was two months late in Ireland. Farmers are running out of feedstock in March -April but there is no grass growth to pick up the shortfall anymore.
This shit is happening in the US as well. It’s so bad that, years ago, a company sued a smaller farmer because the pollen from a patented GMO cross pollinated with the farmers field and so the company with the patent sued the farmer for infringement.

This reminds me of when artists and musicians would post their work online and big companies would copywrite the work and ban the original artist from monetizing it.
As a programmer for 30+ years, I know that cracking a software was always illegal and many times if we did crack (altered) few bits or bytes, it was working ok at first, but after some time we had memory leak or other problems.
Crispr is actually the same as cracking the computer software - it is cracking the DNA code. First of all, they didn't get the permission from the author of the original DNA code to do it, which makes all their patents invalid and illegal. And it will happen that the complete code of life will break down at some point in time, only we can't see it now just because we don't have enough observation data of modified DNA code.

Even back in the early 00s, there was a (very) healthy black market in seeds. A keen gardener friend of mine was telling me about it and he showed me the brochure where it was possible to buy/trade for seed varieties that were being regulated. This was back in the 00s!

This happened over 20 years ago with a farmer in Saskatchewan Canada. Percy Schmeiser, a Saskatchewan farmer, was sued by Monsanto in the early 2000s for growing genetically modified (GMO) canola seeds, which he claimed had blown onto his land from neighboring fields. The dispute eventually reached the Supreme Court of Canada. Monsanto won.
This is happening in the United States as well, getting around GMO plants is getting tough.

Lily in America we call it frankenwheat, modified and causes leaky gut syndrome which it causes autoimmune reaction in gut that makes holes in gut and food particles escape into blood system from leaky gut and body attacks itself as foreign substances, thus causing irritable bowel syndrome or "Ibs", or gluten intolerance, now they have been gassing fruits and vegetables past few years. The situation with GMOs and patents you are describing here has been reality in the US for decades. It is almost impossible to find non GMO foods there. Also the seed marked is controlled only by a few multi-billion-dollar-conglomerates. The EU has protected us from this so far. They reason why CRISPR-modified plants don’t have to be labelled, is that they are indistinguishable from conventionally bred plants. There is no way to control if something has been modified or not. A label doesn’t really make any sense if there is no way to control and enforce it.

Monsanto did that to the detriment of many farmers, if you had even stray seed germinate along the fence, they will come after your crop and FINE on top. You couldn't save any seed or keep any for next crop either.

Let them try and stop me. This is why I try to grow only open pollinated varieties. I am saving seeds from Kale, leeks, beans, cucumbers, and Amish Paste tomatoes. I have saved seeds from carrots, lettuce, peas and celery. Cabbages are a bit of a challenge. It can be done. And you can grow a lot of food in a back yard.

I have not seen any bees this year in the UK.
I believe that pesticides are wiping them out.
There's not a lot of bees in NC either. I had to self pollinate my squash, also mostly male flowers, not many female blooms. What up with that?? Bumble bees are finally here, but I find some of them dead on the ground. Don't know what happened. I do not spray or use any pesticides.

There were many wild bees when i was young. The red hot poker bee had the nastiest sting.
Grow pollen heavy flowers, or shrubs like buddlia which helps butterflies too.

In the USA, Patent law allows fair use by individuals and groups who do not engage in commerce. If anything is patented it may be used in noncommercial activities. If farmers try to exchange anything with a patent they will come under commercial use, but if individuals exchange seeds for private gardens there is free exchange. Research and non commercial activities are allowed under fair use in US patent law. Check to see if the European union countries have such an exception. If not lobby your representatives for fair use exceptions as in US law.
Collect as many non gmo seeds as possible and share with as many people as possible!!!
