  • I had a great deal of joy restoring this old violin. It sat in my customer's attic for over 50 years, and now her talented daughter enjoys playing it very much.
    This violin has a beautiful mature sound with rich and dark overtones. With proper care, it will continue to charm it's listeners for another 200 years :)

    Thanks a lot! Even though i know i will not be able to fix my violin the same way you do, now i know how to mend it in my own and simple way. Your violin is beautiful even after you fixed it, it looked brand new again! Now i know that we shouldn’t just think on how to fix our broken instruments, we should know how to properly take of it.

      No need for a shoulder rest then. Ideal because shoulder rest can dampen the sound!

    The first song is "Gavotte en Rondeau", and the second is "Geige". Both by J.S. Bach.
    The price of pegbox repair is $150-200... I guarantee the lowest repair prices in So-Cal :)

    Hello Wadefite and thanks for watching.
    I would advise against using generic wood stains and varnishes. This could cause a chemical reaction and your violin varnish to bubble-up. Working with violin varnishes takes years to learn and a lifetime to master.
    However, if you still want to experiment, pick up a cheep (well-used) student violin and try different things.
    Best Regards

    I'm fixing a broken violin I got for $32. It's a Lignatone that is labeled Enrico Robella-Milano. The neck broke off.

    I wonder what year it was made and where and the name of maker?No doubt this is time consuming work,requiring delicate and accurate skills....but if the timber it was made from has that inborn sound quality,it would have been a shame to abandon a fine old instrument.Nice,interesting video.Thank you!

    • @jz441
      @jz441  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Noel Paech - It was made here in the US (Midwest). The owners great grandfather made it... He was a luthier.
      Thanks for watching :)

  • @shawneyrox1

    What is the song that is playing in the video? And alsohow much would you estimate the cost of a peg box repair like that would be?

  • @nickfritz8692
    @nickfritz8692 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    What glue did you use for the maple cleats? Was it hide glue you mix in the glue pot or was it the "Titebond liquid hide wood glue"? I have a violin that has a good crack with some of the wood missing all the way through the A string peghole, @1/8" gap. Would I try to fit some wood into the gap?

    • @jz441
      @jz441  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nick Fritz - The best thing is to have a luthier do the repairs. Repairing a pegbox is a very delicate process. If not repaired properly, a much greater damage could be caused to the instrument.
      I always use the fresh hide glue from the pot... In this video I had the Titebond around for a different project that I was working on. Titebond does not have the necessary straight for this type of repair.

    • @MikeMitchellBand

      Was it one of Otto Meyer's chin rests maybe? Just wondering how Ottokar's name was stamped on the back...

    • @jz441
      @jz441  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Mitchell No, it's Otakar Sevcik's design. While on staff at Prague Conservatory, he came up with this design to increase comfort and reduce neck fatigue. With his influence it wasn't too difficult to find a manufacturer willing to mass produce them.
      This was a big step in pre-shoulder rest era.

      By the way, some luthiers use an olive oil with powder, but I have no idea what powder was it. Maybe you know. Perhaps, you know other ways of polishing a violin. Thanks
