Jaws: When a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) wants to close the beaches, but mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. Ichthyologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled ship captain Quint (Robert Shaw) offer to help Brody capture the killer beast, and the trio engage in an epic battle of man vs. nature.

      Same here, about Quinn's death.
Decades ago I was waitressing at a diner and served the same older men as regulars.
One regular, who always sat apart from the other regulars, wore his "US Navy" Veteran's hat. He had a newer ball-cap one day and it said "USS Indianapolis" on it.
I paid attention to *all the words* he had to say, after noticing his hat.
While I didn't know the official history of the "Indy" back in the 1990s (pre-Google), however, I was *very* aware of Quint's monologue from "JAWS" about being a survivor of the Indianapolis tragedy.
That regular from my Diner days, has been passed away for some time now. It's really eye opening, to learn about the skinking today now that de-classified documents have been released.

Her crying out for God's help before being taken under to her death was what got me. There's also one part where she's leaned over in the direction she was being dragged that made her look like a doll. This was a very strong sequence in a brilliantly directed and acted movie. Props to Carl Gottlieb for writing the screen adaptation that also reduced the size of his role as Harry Meadows (who had a significantly larger role in the novel).

The shark in Jaws is ten feet smaller than the largest Great White found, in Australia at 36 feet in 1870. The story about the USS Indianapolis is true. The shooting star in the film is real and pure happenstance but Spielberg was so impressed with it that he made it a signature shot in all his films. At the time the film was made many experts said a Great White could not leap out of the water and so it was fantastical; a few years later Nature film crews filmed Great Whites leaping out of the water to take seals. Jaws started the Film trend of Summer Blockbusters.

"The jaws from this shark are held at the British Museum of Natural History in London and were examined separately by shark experts Dr Perry Gilbert (Cornell University, New York State) and Dr John Randall (Bishop Museum, Hawaii), both of whom published their assessments in 1973. After measuring the jaws and teeth, Gilbert estimated the shark was closer to 5 meters (16 ½ feet) and Randall estimated it was around 5.4 metres (17 ½ feet) - approximately half the length originally claimed.
Gilbert very politely put the discrepancy down to a typographical error and Randall agreed:
Although these jaws are impressive, they do not approach the size one would expect for a shark 36.5 feet long. It is possible that a mistake might have been made in recording the shark’s length. P. W. Gilbert independently examined the jaws, and he has suggested that there might have been a printer’s error; the length should perhaps have been 16.5 feet"
Sorry mate, no world record there.

      Mikmuk,
The Seven Star Lake great white was over 20 ft. It was 7 metres. Other evidence indicates great whites can grow over 20ft such as bite marks measured by Colin Ostle of the Western Australian Sept of Fisheries, and the bite mark and tooth fragment from the Jack Rochette attack.
      The Submarine was circa 23/24ft.
Biggest 'recorded', ie measured by a scientist, doesn't mean the biggest ever.

Great reaction to one of my favorite movies. :)
FYI, the barrels float and they're meant to slow the fish down and stop it from being able to stay underwater. It was supposed to get exhausted from the extra drag of the barrels. The shark is a super-fish because it could submerge even with three barrels attached. That's when even Quint started to get scared.
Also, the shooting stars in some of the shots were happy accidents of nature. They just happened during filming on location on the water.
This movie was the first summer blockbuster, and it invented the jump scare. I saw it as a kid when it came out, and when the dead man's head popped out of the hole in the boat, man, popcorn and soda went flying all over the theater. It was great.
Also, Jaws is inspired by a true story from 1916 when a shark swam up a river in New Jersey and killed several people over a summer. It was probably a bull shark, which is a dangerous species than can live in both salt and fresh water, but it was kind of a horror-story legend. The author of the original novel, Peter Benchley, used that story and a lot of real science about shark behavior, but his story and the movie triggered an anti-shark panic. Benchley regretted that and put a lot of work into spreading public education about what sharks are really like.
By the way, re what you said about how deep the ocean is - don't think not being in the depths will save you. Great white sharks, like the one in this story, actually do jump right out of the water to catch prey. Scientists recently caught that on video in Australia or South Africa, I think, and the whole world was like "haha, nope." I think they mostly do it when hunting seals because they come up fast from below to grab the prey and break into the air from momentum, but they do seem to practice doing it.

"We're gonna need a bigger boat"

  • @Sara_Feingold
    @Sara_Feingold 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Being out in the ocean is definitely a humbling experience. I went out on a whale-watching tour off the Pacific coast of Baja about 10 years ago, and we had baby whales coming right up next to the boat and letting us touch them while their parents swam around us. It was very cool, but I can't deny that seeing a huge dark blot passing under the boat that could've capsized us no problem made my heart skip a beat XD
Should go without saying, but this movie (and the book it's based on) is very much a work of fiction. In reality, the majority of "shark attacks" are a shark just taking a bite of something that looks edible and then leaving when it doesn't taste right. It's just an animal doing its thing, and humans are the ones trespassing in their homes when we go out into the water.

Just as an aside Quint was partly based on real life Long Island shark fisherman Frank Mundus. In 1964 Mundus caught a 17.5ft 4,500 pound great white off Montauk using the harpoon and barrel method. This method was quite widely used in those days. Yes the barrels act as a drag and keep the shark near the surface as well as tiring it out.
    Cheers.

I am sure for time sake you had to cut it out, but the scene at night on the boat, where the 3 of them are rocking, sitting around table, light swinging with the water, and he tells the story of his time in the Navy. It is masterclass of how to create tension. No effects. Nothing. Just 3 guys in a small set piece, creating a moment of impending doom. One of the greatest scenes of tension in any film or tv ever

    4. The jump scare at Ben Gardner's boat was put in on purpose by Spielberg because they were having problems with the
shark "Bruce" and his appearance was delayed and the movie needed something earlier.
    5. IRL Dreyfuss and Shaw didn't get along so Spielberg used the animosity to fuel their feud onscreen.
    6. Hooper was right. The fish that hit the line was a game fish.
    7. "You're gonna need a bigger boat" is one of the greatest adlibs in history. It was the first time Roy actually saw Bruce.
    8. Goof: An animal that large couldn't hit the side of the boat as rapidly as it did UNDER WATER.
    9. I suspect Quint's story about the Indy gave him PTSD flashbacks and contributed to his behavior after he told the story.
    10. I was in the Navy and we were instructed to go for the eyes when confronting a shark.
    11. In the book not only does Hooper die in the cage but he was also having an affair with Mrs. Brody.
    12. JAWS II is the only other one worth watching. It revolves around the Brody kids and their friends. Including one of the mayors kids.

34:47 -- The shooting star has become a director trademark of Stephen Spielberg ever since Jaws.. In EVERY movie he's done since, there's always been one somewhere.. It's like his good luck charm.

I find Jaws more prevalent a film for people to watch these days because it teaches a valuable lesson. Only way to deal with a problem is to recognize you have one, other wise the problem gonna get ya.

34:39 -- the barrels are full of air. The idea is to tire the shark out from dragging them and he has to stay near the surface because he can't go under too deep with them.. At least with a normal shark..

Most of the Indianapolis crew that died out there died from exposure and lack of sustenance. They were bobbing out in cold sea water for days and nights before being rescued; imagine going that long without food, water, desperately trying to stay afloat in freezing salt water. Only 150 were said to have been eaten alive by sharks like white tips and tigers.
Fun fact: the Japanese submarine I-58 (the sub that sank the Indianapolis) was found submerged after having been scuttled after the war; she landed stern first into the sea floor and remained upright like a flag pole.

The barrels are used to keep track as well as to wear the shark down. The more barrels the tougher it is for the shark to swim.

And you can't prep yourself for that jump scare by listening to the score because the scare cheats the score and arrives early and unexpected.
I saw this when it opened at the shore after reading the novel and I was braced for the Chrissy Watkins body reveal; something extremely graphic and frightening in the novel. When it didn't materialize, I relaxed. Until that head popped out; something NOT in the novel.

Nice reaction bro, first time visitor. I'll sub up and see what else you've reacted to. Just so you know $3,000 in 1975 was equivalent to about $15,400 today. The 10,000 that Hooper demanded would equal to just over 50K today. So he wasn't cheap LOL.

The Barrels serve a couple purposes. It makes it possible to find the Shark because in theory it's difficult for the Shark to drag the barrel below the surface. Also the barrels slow down and wear down the Shark making him more vulnerable Of course this Shark was so strong, even three barrels had no effect.

9:10 I truly appreciate that you didn't cut that part at all. The Soundtrack is such a build up. DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN this version is called ''empty raft'' it's my favorite of all the versions we hear in the movie.
Also i googled it and 3000$ in 1975 is worth 16 000$ nowadays. I kinda get it why they are so willing to do that.

You're right.. Everyone dislikes Quint at first, but when you learn what he'd been through... Watching his friends and fellow sailors be savagely eaten... He grows on you. He was hard on Hooper because he was breaking him out of that wealthy college boy image... Robert Shaw (Quint) was also hard on Richard Dreyfuss (Hooper) on set because he was the "new kid" and Shaw knew he could be a better actor.

#MajorReacts Yes, that was actually a shooting star that they caught on camera purely by accident. No one actually seen it or noticed it when it happened, it was only when they were editing the film that they realized it. Pretty cool, huh?
