Ladder back Jacquard - invisibly manage long floats in stranded knitting

- The ladder back jacquard method is used in Fair Isle colorwork knitting to turn a series of long floats into a “ladder” of interlocking stitches on the back side. This neatly secures the floats and gives the piece impressive elasticity. In this video, Alexis Winslow explains everything that you need to know to incorporate this technique into your next knitting project.

Thank you for making this technique so clear ! I have watched so many videos on this technique and they always left me confused and thinking it was a technique best left to the experts. As I am currently knitting a color work sweater I was able to incorporate this method and it is working great.
Oh oh ok so its like doing a doubleknit but only in strategic spots to achor down the floats, that makes so much more sense now ty!

FINALLY I learned something new in knitting. Thank you 😊 I've been knitting for almost 50 years, so this to me is so fun to learn. Being Norwegian i knit Norwegian style, so i am used to knit in the floats, but i think this looks better 👍🇧🇻 This I'll try 🥰

@@AlexisWinslow Quick initial question: I am new to colorwork and not having used ladderback jacquard so far, I have had to go up 1-2 needle sizes to get fabric comparable to what I would have gotten on smaller needles with a single (non-stranded) yarn. With ladderback jacquard, will I still expect to have to go up in needle size or is it stretchy enough to anticipate my usual smaller needle size would suffice?

I'm glad that you liked the tutorial! The pattern that I was knitting was one that I made up just for the video. Would you use the same process in extended sections of the secondary colour?
Yes, the process works the same way no matter what color you are using. In other words, you can have a ladder in either color in the same row. Anywhere you might have a very long float, you can use this technique. Also, you could have multiple ladders in the same section, if your float is extremely long.
What about the purl side? If it's not in the round.
@mrmcint for the purl side, the process is pretty much the same except you'll KNIT the ladder stitch instead of purling it. Also, be sure to move the working yarn to the wrong side (front on a purl row) to keep your strands from showing on the right side.
