@JohnHansen , a couple of things with this: apart from The Comeback, there was also some video available for rent for a few years afterwards that was shot from right behind the judges. From that angle, honestly, Arnold made the other competitors look like kids. His frame was built on a totally different scale. And his condition was pretty good. Even though he was nowhere near what he was in 71, 73, or 74. I think the most interesting ‘what if’ is if Frank Zane doesn’t get injured and comes in 5-10% better than he was in 1979. I think that that version of him would have beaten the 1980 version of Arnold.
I don’t think Arnold would’ve entered if Zane was at his peak

And Arnold knew with only 8 weeks of serious training, he would NOT be at his best. He could beat Zane if he was coming off an injury but he could get beat by a 1979 peak Frank Zane

Shawn is in a tough spot. He can't go against Arnold because Arnold will hold a grudge and shut Shawn out. Shawn is like corporate media. He has to say what they tell him to say or he gets cut off. This is bad spot to have Shawn on because its obvious he sounds stupid which he isn't .

Shawn isn't the only one who thought Arnold won the 1980 Olympia. Danny Padilla was there competing and he had Arnold as the winner. Wayne Gallasch, who photographed EVERYBODY and had an angle in the front near the judges, also had Arnold winning it. Their opinion holds a lot of weight with me.
I wasn't there, but although Arnold was disappointing from the condition we're use to seeing, I thought from the photos and video, and with his posing and charisma, that he still had enough to edge out the others.
@TheLusianPopa Some good points; some not so good. But sorry friend. You weren't there. Wayne and Danny were. Photos don't tell the whole story. If they did, then I guess Arnold really was bigger than Lou at the 1974 Olympia.

Mentzer was great in the front double, arms overhead, and a few other poses. But he looked very average in the front relaxed. His gut poked out and his chest was flat. If Arnold had his legs of old, it would be a convincing win.
Another thing to consider , At the time, 8 of the last 9 Olympia's were Won By Arnold or Zane ( who had a thinner leaner symmetrical physique and was the defending champ ) Who Better to represent the present day standard then a leaner , thinner version of Arnold who was also a Giant of a man in comparison to the others ???

There are MANY people who said Arnold should not have won in 1980, and Shawn Ray KNOWS this, but will Never admit to it. Shawn Ray absolutely has to win every conversation, or else he'll whynne like a baby!

1983 Samir and 1996 or 1999 Shawn Ray might be the two most complete physiques ever. Glad Samir didn't get overwhelmed by mass-monsters.
Samir and John are making the contest about Arnold vs the former Arnold and the amount of time he trained. Arnold's former condition and conditioning are irrelevant. Only Shawn can get past that. This isn't about his length of training warranting a win, the type of training, or even if he looked better days or weeks before. This was about how he looked compared to the others and his win was justified. Shawn is one of the sharpest guys to ever step on a stage and his mental acuity and the point he's trying to make is dead on. If Samir was seeing Arnold for the first time ever in 1980 (and never before), his entire illogical argument would evaporate.

Have to point out that Samir was watching the back of every pose. He did not see what the judges or even the audience saw. Competitors have to see photos afterwards to see what other competitors presented.

Shawn is wrong on about being at a Olympia. Pictures don't tell everything. Shawn old friend Doran Yates didn't look the best in pictures but if you seen him at the contest he made everyone look off and smaller. It's obvious to me Shawn is sucking up to Arnold.

Cbum might be the same height as Andrew but the weight difference is huge. About 30-40 pounds of lean muscle mass.

Almost Every reason Shawn gave for Arnie winning was a excuse he had for Dorian not winning in the 90s lol.

Without Arnold’s friend/friends being a judge at the 1980 Olympia he does not win period. Arnold, we love him but he will and did fuck over people just get way and that the truth. The 1981 Olympia, Franco was all the way off but because Arnold promoted the show and had his friends once again as the judges they let Franco win, when actually Danny Padilla should have won.

Mentzer was the 1979 Mr Olympia heavy wt Champion and looking at the pictures he was better than Arnold and also Roger Walker was better than Arnold. I think they placed both Mentzer and Walker 5th and 6th to try nd make Arnolds win not look so controversial.
Theres form in dodgy wins when you look at the 1981 Mr Olympia as it was even more obvious.

Arnold looked like a swimmer . Literally smallest quads ever seen on an Olympia stage . Boyer coy looked better , Mike mentzer looked better , Roy callender looked better . Certain poses he looked extremely thin and small and narrow . He was 6’2 213 pounds
