  • Modernization: the process in which a society becomes modern, shifting from pre-modern, traditional ways of thinking and doing towards modern and even post modern ways of being. Pre modern societies can be characterized by a focus on tradition, simpler technologies, collective orientation, hunter/gatherer or agricultural economy, and mechanical solidarity. Modern societies can be characterized by a focus on progress and change, more advanced technologies, individualism, industrial or manufacturing based economy, and organic solidarity.
Some of the mechanisms that drive this shift include population growth, increased division of labor, greater social diversity, increase in technology, and the secularization of ideologies.
Related to, but distinct from, modernization theory, which is a more specific concept/theory in the study of globalization which argues that the only way for developing nations to make progress is for them to abandon pre-modern ways of being in exchange for modern ones.
types of society: • Types of Society
