rationalization

  • Rationalization: the process by which society becomes more rational; meaning that ways of solving problems and approaching tasks increasingly focus on efficiency and outcomes, rather than on traditions and processes. Life becomes increasingly ordered, organized, and governed by rules, regulations, and procedures. Social life becomes more impersonal. The classical economic logic of "maximizing self interest" is increasingly applied to all spheres and aspects of life.
Rationalization is an important aspect in the modernization process as societies shift from pre-modern or traditional ways of functioning to modern and post modern ones. According to Max Weber, rationalization begins in production during industrialization and the development of large bureaucracies, but spills over into other aspects of social life, eventually encompassing all aspects of life.

For everyone watching this, please keep in mind that this is a representation of someone's particular take on rationality and what that means for the process of becoming more rational (as a society). It is not a descriptive claim of what rationality IS. It does NOT mean that an act of altruism cannot be rational for instance, or that rationality is empirically studied solely in terms of calculation/logic/maths.

If rational is calculated through « best interest » isn’t in some cases the most rational way is the non rational way ?
