he is not being cancelled , he is being held accountable. if the tennis media can critique ostapenko or putintseva on their tantrums and antics, i think it should also be fair to criticize established media members, hot mic or not.

      ‘Cancel culture’

Tennis is not a sport for tolerating tantrums even though Nastase and Mac and Connors made it more fashionable. This is a cultural revolution and it needs to be balanced and fair. She already knows she had a big head and should shrug it off as genes instead of making such a big deal about it. All emotional and she needs thicker skin. I can't imagine Navarro being offended or Pegula, Swiatek or Sabby. From a previous generation, Stefi Graf, Evert, Lendl (S.I.'s "The Champion Nobody Cares About", or Kevin Curren (daddy long legs) would have made a big deal out of it.

  • @Vescilla

I don't think it matters that he didn't know it was live. If anything it kinda exposed what kind of comments he feels comfortable making about players when he's not on air and I truly wish they employed people who don't make derogatory and disrespectful comments about players' appearance even off air, I'm sure there are people like that out there.
And saying that if Jon said something negative about Medvedev's hairline, people wouldn't be outraged is so weird to me. He didn't, and that's the thing, commentators and other professionals in the sports field feel much more comfortable commenting on women's looks, and you compare it to some anonymous internet users laughing at Meddy's hairline. You can't really cancel someone who's a nobody but we can try to make sports a healthier environment for women (and men if they feel disrespected by any comments) by getting rid of the toxic units among the people who are supposed to commentate on the matches, not whether someone wears makeup or not or that they have a big forehead, it's really not that hard to just not comment on someone's appearance in general.
Jon's apology didn't even sound fully remorseful to me, the written one especially where he was trying to explain the context as if it made it any better.
I don't exactly understand what you mean by mentioning that society got more sensitive and something about cancel culture. I think it's good that people react to clear disrespect, it's not because they're overly sensitive but because they have empathy imo. It's not cancel culture to want a person who made a mistake to be held accountable, there were and still are too many examples of that not happening (like Kyrgios who you mentioned in the video)

Even though I don't agree with everything you wrote, I also thought that the apology was basically an attempt for an explanation. Which takes away from a sincere " I just messed up, I promise to do and be better in the future by educating myself, I am sorry". But even if he had the perfect apology I think people would have not forgiven him and remind him of this incident for the rest of his professional life. And I find that sad as well.

    • @Aliceteacup
      @Aliceteacup หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@Vescilla I agree JW should be held accountable as well. Whether his apology was genuine or not is only something JW can know as we cannot read his mind. Having said that, making gratuitously offensive marks about a player’s physical appearance is completely unprofessional and reflects poorly on the sports media industry. But you should also point out the hypocrisy of outrage over this off-air offensive comment when juxtaposing it to the myriad of appalling remarks NK has made and continues to make while still being hired by major networks. It’s all unacceptable imo. The biggest irony in all of this is that JW and his colleagues recently expressed that the drama Nick Kyrios brings to tennis is “good for the sport”. I wonder if they still feel that way now. Many of us, in fact probably the majority of tennis fans, prefer to keep the clown brigade out of the sport. it brings zero of value to it.

Imagine devoting your life to tennis to have this garbage posted publicly. Comparisons are irrelevant. Normatively, this is inexcusable. Tennis Channel’s actions were appropriate. Hi Tom, I understand your decision to unsubscribe to Christian's channel, and I respect your feelings. I also recognize that you subscribed for a reason in the first place, and it's clear that the content meant something to you. That said, I feel like this situation is an opportunity to agree to disagree rather than unsubscribe entirely. By the way, Barbora's post about "this is not the first time this has happened in sports" is so true. In 1997, Less than two years into her comeback, Monica Seles was already being branded a "has-been." Her grunts were scrutinized for their decibel level. She was called fat. One male tennis player even saw her at the player food court and referred to her as a "fat cow." She was advised to wear different tennis dresses. In one tabloid, her head was photo-shopped onto the body of a middle-aged woman with dimpled, cellulite-ridden thighs.
This was the harsh reality of Seles' post-stabbing career-and throughout it all, no one stepped forward to defend her. So yeah, THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED IN SPORTS.

Most female tennis players pull their hair back when they’re playing so it makes their forehead just a little bit more prominent than usual. But of of course that's precisely how sexism and misogyny work; even the ugliest men will feel they have the right to ridicule and undermine a woman's appearance.

A bit disappointed in your take honestly, especially talking about how we've become too sensitive! No one wants these comments made about them, it's mean and it doesn't come down to sensitivity, it comes down to professionalism and just time and place for comments like that.... I know people will always say them, but with a microphone on while you're about to be on live TV is one of the silliest places ever...
I think your comparison to Medvedev is completely understandable, but he's not a woman, and that's where you lost me. You said 15 years ago that what commentators said about women were horrific and most of our players today were watching said comments be made growing up!
The suspension is very transparent, especially with the NK comparison. Though he is a player and like you said, TC wants to keep the players happy over everything.

Speaking from experience, comments on a woman's appearance are a definite no-go. He’s a grown man, and I’m sure someone has given him a warned him before-probably more than once. But here we are, and it’s out in the open. In the media, especially, there’s just no room for careless comments; it’s just too big a platform. I’m sure he regrets it, and while Tennis Channel may have come down a bit hard, they likely felt they had to take a stance. Christian will blow up soon in the tennis world and probably become a top commentator someday. Keep grinding; I’m rooting for him!

I mean, Jon intended on saying that and he got caught. He owned up to it and made a sincere apology. The problem is not the intend to harm, it is the acceptance of the culture to poke fun at others expense. It’s unfortunate because there are many other seriously bad actors in Tennis Channel and Tennis TV, but the acceptance of these jokes on a hot mic or not toward athletes that are just there to perform is a culture issue. And in our society, we have accepted too much, people’s feelings have been hurt too long, cancel culture was inevitable and cancel culture happens on all sides of the isle because society is in it’s grievance and revenge era. This is why we blame cancel culture, and it’s really the product of grievance in our society. And people tune out calls of cancel culture so it falls on deaf ears

I think the problem goes beyond tennis. It is constant that female athletes get comments on physical appearance on top of their career achievements. It’s though to compare to how a male would react because they haven’t had a history of this. I don’t know if it’s fair or not, but I think the discussion should be on why is this still happening… female athletes don’t start from cero carrying this judgement, there’s a history of it and this should be addressed.

"Cancel culture" isn't the same as being held accountable for your actions in the public space. In this situation, Jon did something inappropriate and unprofessional in public and is just being held accountable. However, after apologising and being taken off air for a period of time, he should be given the opportunity to come back and move on.
I also think people are using the term "sexism" (perhaps incorrectly) to highlight that there was likely a gender dynamic at play in him making the comment. I would bet my money that he made that comment in order to get some reaction from the men around him, and would have thought twice about saying it out loud if there was a woman present.

He tweeted, not expecting the tweet to be retweeted around the world. Jon, who should have mentoring him, instead crucified him. He wrote disgusting articles about Kyrgios, for three weeks, demanding his cancellation which led to people like you making long videos without looking behind the tweet (you misquoted it here already). Jon is a full time commentator and I sure hope he comes back soon. Kyrgios will probably never come back. He is too honest, Too off the cuff, uses the sort of language such as 'trash-talking' that is acceptable in other sports that he loves.
