- Lions are the main cause of death for hyenas in the Ngorongoro Crater. Male lions are twice the size of a spotted hyena and three to four times as heavy, and one single paw stroke can kill an adult hyena. Lions may stalk hyenas at their resting places and try to surprise hyenas approaching kills.

That is what males main task is in pride : to protect the others, females and cubs ,youngsters nephews, occasianally to help hunting the biggest prey - buffalos. He is just practising what he is going to to when he is fully grown up King

I watched one lion 🦁 get rat packed and he didn't seem hurt afterwards, he fought until they gave up,not him!!!!!!! By Dutti’s logic, the hyenas defeated the lions because they forced one lion to approach them, therefore expending precious energy and the lion will surely die slowly from exhaustion.
Also, I counted about 7 lions and over 20 hyenas easily. But Dutti knows best. Those hyenas were all junior cub scouts.

Lion is still the king particularly when the pride takes it seriously. Hyena is still far from comparable to it. Most of the times the lions retreat are just because they have already finished the feasts and left them behind for scavengers.
