Small correction if your stating Luna’s wing pattern is a flamesilk thing. It’s not Blue’s wings are based on a blue moroho butterfly (SilkWings don’t have black scales so his wings are tipped purple instead), and Luna’s wings are based on a luna moth From what the books have described, the only main indicator of a flamesilk are uniquely bright glowing wrists during the metamorphosis phase
I believe Starflights tongue could be lighting. Same with Turtles ears. Also, I’m confused on what you mean by pink? Winters ears are still obviously purple-ish in color and paler than other membranes, I would’ve used Queen Snowfall as a better example of “red IceWing blood” since her wing membranes are warm colored.
I found this on Blue’s Trivia section for his page. The Lost Continent Cover gives Blue his wings because when Joy Ang showed Tui sketches of him without his wings, Tui said that they felt too pretty to leave out, and Tui did know it was out of place.
Most of the color issues are due to lighting and shading, but there definitely were a bunch of mistakes. One thing I’ve always wondered about it the scale of Blue’s cover. They always describe the hives as being big with large rooms, but when you look at one next to a dragon, it looks as if only five full grown dragons could fit within its walls. In the books, it also states that it takes a really long time to fly across Pantala, but the hives nearly cover the whole thing. Why do they look so close together on the cover? This isn’t necessarily a cover issue, but Wasp Hive is known to be much larger than the other hives. How come it looks smaller than the rest on the Pantala map..?
Fun fact: Tsunami AND Turtle’s jaws are shaped like a lions mouth. I got this fact from Jade Mountain Archive. Also my favorite book cover in the series is book 3 and my least favorite is book 11.
Huh, I'm embarrassed to say I've never noticed a single one of these mistakes 😅 But for the dragons in the background for The Dangerous Gift cover, it's possible that they're just IceWings, maybe even the army Snowfall brought about when meeting the Pantalan dragons.
You know a mistake almost everybody seems to not notice is that sky on the cover of book 15 is supposed to have lighter scales. When Qibli meets Sky for the first time he thought Sky was a Sandwing because of how light his scales where, and his scales are always described as pale and looking almost like Sandwing scales.
Two more cover errors: Sky on the cover of flames of hope looks like a normal Skywing, even though he is depicted are being a sort of creamy color (and it’s also shown in the graphic novel as that color) Scavenger sizes are not right; in Dragonslayer cover, the scavengers are around the size of Sandstorm’s talon, but in Flames of Hope cover, Wren is like almost half the size of Sky! I also think that none of these scavenger sizes are right. I think the size would be somewhere in between
I think the sandwing on the cover of the second legends book had grey eyes because then you can see the pupil, it was probably just added for detail! (It could have been done like that for emphasis or something else like that though)
I always thought the NightWing neck scales were something some nightwings have, but not all. Also, Qibli isn't wearing the bracelet. Also with the inconsistency of the extra wing membrane. So I've just kept it as; NightWings, IceWings, MudWings, and SandWings don't have it. SkyWings, SeaWings, and RainWings do.
With the winter one I think it might just be the background bc the background looks sorta pinkish-purplish and the light might just be going through his ear making it look pink (maybe I’m not sure tho ya’ll can discuss it in the comments) 1:28
If anyone says smth about crickets colors on blues book cover, ITS JUST LIGHTING. Their scales get more brighter and colorful in sunlight! Its not a mistake 😭
one of the mistakes i found that you didn't mention: on the cover of book one, Clay seems to have these big and rough scales on his claws.(look at SkyWing talons for a better depiction) though on the pages of information about the dragon tribes, it shows that MudWing claws don't have those bulky scales.
I think a lot of these were so small that you wouldn't be able to tell even if they did do it right (mostly the eyes, those are probably all results of the lighting (Tsunami was under BLUE water, Starflight was above YELLOW lava, etc), along with the ring being small enough that it might have made it look less like a ring if they added too many colors), and small design elements like Sundew's wing tips are excusable as they're kind of inconsistently mentioned in the books anyway. Stuff like Qibli's scar, though, how?? I also remember thinking a lot about Blue's colors when I was reading TLC, because I was like,,, he's described as lavender?? But he's dark purple and green on the cover?? Anyway, fun video
Book cover art is usually commissioned by the publishers (not the writers) long before the book is completely finished. Sometimes the writers have zero input as to what the cover artist creates. Other times there's good communication between them, which I believe is the case with Joy Ang and Tui. However, it's really common that there's some discrepancies between the way the characters are drawn on the cover and how they're described in the book. Usually just because the artist doesn't have all the little details at the time they're creating the art. Or they may take some "artistic license" just because they feel the image will work better that way. Also editors and publishers will often insist on changes based on what they think will make the cover look best and sell copy. If you look at the International versions of WOF covers, you'll see the publishers went with what each area tends to imagine Dragons as looking like. So the European versions look more beastlike and ferocious than they do on the North American covers, while the Asian versions have more typical Asian Dragon-style traits.
Yeah; for the English covers, Tui and Joy Ang have a lot of communication (like how Tui told her that she could do whatever she wanted for the background of The Hive Queen)
In wings of fire book 9(talons of power I think) they say Turtle has a bag or pouch. But in the front cover he has no pouch. This goes for all the books with dragons with a pouch. I’m not sure if it’s a choice of design to not add a pouch or it’s on the other side of the dragon’s body that you can’t see but probably not.
Something I noticed, Sky is described as “So light they nearly looked like a sandwing” at one point I think, and he looks pretty orange/dark in the cover to where he honestly looks like a normal skywing to me
This doesn't have anything to do with this video, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEEEEASE make the 'What If Sundew got taken over by the Othermind' a two part series, or at least make SOMETHING from the POV of Wasp of how she takes over Pyrrhia and Pantala!
Honestly, I'll have to consider that! I'd really love to write about an apocalyptic Pyrrhia and Pantala, as well as Luna working with the freed to stop Wasp once and for all. I'll really have to think about that :O I did leave you guys with an unfair ending
Night-wings having silver scales along their sides is not mentioned in the opening guide of _any_ book. This is not a clear detail in the photo either, as they are the same shade as the underbelly. I actually have no idea where this comes from and it was only put in my mind by this video so I went back and checked- I see it in the wiki but in none of the opening descriptions, and the wiki doesn’t have a source listed for it.
Luna is based off of the Luna moth which has the “flamesilk ” pattern and I don’t know if it’s a symbol for flamesilk because I refuse to research about if it was said in a book or just a misconception
I don’t know if this is an error but Darkstalker has twisted horns even though neither Icewings nor Nightwings have those. Although to be fair most of the time when it comes to design the explanation is usually “it looks cool”, regardless if it’s canon or not
U forgot that Qibli's earing is on the wrong ear and Sky's colour is wrong, he is described as sickly pale, I think peach? But he is also described to specifically be the colour of the palest sunsets. He is shown here looking like a normal sunset colour as if he had fire!
Yeah I don't understand why the royal sea patterns don't show up on the book that they're the most important in, but then in book 9 they aren't even mentioned
On book four Starflight is roaring on the cover but normally he doesn't like to fight and is scared a lot on the night wing island so why would he roar and also the graphic novel cove is completely different from the normal books cover (normal book is Starflight roaring & the graphic novel cover has Starflight acting scared and backed into what I think is a corner) i just think it looks off from Starflight's personality and character traits in book 4
You missed the fact that Darkstalker's jaw isn't colored in, and looks kind of weird, on the cover of his book. Edit: In a few areas, but mainly where his jaw meets his neck.
i understand blues cover showing him with wings, but dragonslayers cover doesnt make sense. Sandstorm is shown, ALIVE, with wren leaf and ivy. but hes dead before wren meets ivy and leaf.
Yes they are mistakes but they in some didn't want to spoil the whole thing about the story but others may have s just no ones thought of reading the book so the artist just did a bit of creative idea 📙
I think it's just to make the eyes look better, because pure soulless black eyes don't look great on a cover. General Sandstorm's eyes are a mix of gray and black which adds to why I think this is the case
Not to be picky, its just I have watched similar things from other channels and tsunami's snout should be elonginatied like a sea predator, not like a lion's.
It's just the lighting in the cover that makes his scales appear that way. Also, it's not really fair to blame the graphic novel for a having a lot of mistakes, most of the mistakes people point out are really nit-picky and unnoticeable, and it's likely a lot of the art had to be rushed in order to complete it by a deadline.
