@@KlutzyNinjaKitty the best part is that since he's executive producer he has direct power over the writers about how faithful they have to be, and that is alongside how protective Warhammer itself tends to be of their Source material
Not protective enough sadly, or rather as far as I know, they've kind of been putting people through hoops by giving them partial licenses, so then the creators of original works tend to deviate more from the source, because they don't have license to use parts of the setting. A bit similar thing that happened to rings of power. So yes, if a show is done directly for WG and they are not selling the license to somebody then cool, but then you also get budget constraints. It's funny how mainstream media adaptions tend to turn everyone into selfish miserable pricks. They want to make everything so "realistic" and "relatable" that the fantasy becomes no longer desirable. The world of the witcher is horrible with monsters, famine, disease and curses. Yet the genuinely good, sympathetic characters with a good heart still made it something to enjoy, a world where hapiness can be found. The conclusion of the actor sumarrises it perfectly. Netflix have perfectly created a world with no redeemable qualities.
Maybe the creators of the show are/only interacted with, selfish miserable procks, and can't grasp the concept of genuinely good, sympathetic characters
It’s crazy how the writers took an epic fantasy tale and spun it into a lifeless drama. The animated Netflix movie was more gripping than the entire 3 seasons of the show.
I was so excited to see grand views and some of my favorite monsters out in their habitat. We got got about 5 minutes of that and the rest is yapping and drama. Sucks to see
Lately I’ve been reading Blood of Elves and listening to the Sword of Destiny on Audible ,,,, I’ve come to the conclusion that Geralt is actually a really kind person who is constantly capable of mercy and compassion to the people who really need it, tells his kid not to swear, humors people he doesn’t like because he still has manners, and would help a sick woman do her business in the bushes because he’s just Like That. I feel bad for Henry Cavill because he undoubtedly came to the same conclusions I did and still was given so little to work with from the writers of the Netflix show.
And he is also from a long line of tortured mutant that is on the decline and is torned between his will to never let what happened to him befall on another innocent personne and the dreadful fear of who he is , the witchers and their memory to disappear in the never ending wave of "progress". That why he would not even listen to the barmaid being like "oh can i pleeaaaaase be a witcher to" He is torn between his constant brush against fate and prophecy and his nihilisme about it. His entire relation with ciri and even yenefer is one of fate and prophecy made but then denied because "i don't believe in prophecy" (hell even the few thing we know about his mother is tied to fate and prophecy). There's a google doc somewhere and a reddit thread that shows all the things that are different. It's rather long (tried to link but comment got deleted).
It's basically "Geralt and Ciri goes to Kaer Morhen.." and that's it. That's the end of adaptation. Rest of the season 2 is fan fic (and NOT a good one). They use names of characters and places and that's IT. Not one plot point from the books. Characters are completely different. Relations between them completely wrong. Netflix had such a golden opportunity with this series. They had a very popular fantasy ip and Henry Cavill at the lead role. Not only that, Henry was actually passionate about his character. This was a rare opportunity and it could have been big enough to rival game of thrones, lauren has cost them way more than just money.
I was growing up reading witcher books, so I was really hyped when they decided to make netflix serial for the witcher. There is old Polish one, but they really did it dirty, so I was like "Yeah now is the time!". Well, it wasn't and netflix somehow managed to make it worse than it's predecessor from 2002. First season left me confused and miserable. I watched 2nd with sole purpose poking fun of it. Play the games, read the books. Witcher cinematography is cursed af.
The sad thing is that the 2002 one was bad because they knew the material, but lacked the budget and expertise to realize their passion. Netflix had the budget and (arguably) somewhat more experience with filmmaking, but completely hamstrung their every advantage due to their lack of passion for the material and understanding of the audience. One need only look to the overwhelming success of the MCU (or TW3!) to see what happens when passion and knowledge of the source material and its audience meets artistic competence and a large budget.
Try "Alzur's legalicy", a fan made witcher movie. In pursuit comes Triss Merigold, with help of an old bard, Dandelion, his bastard son Julian and Lambert, the last monster slayer, seeking for revenge.
I have a soft spot for the old Wiedźmin show. Maybe it is nostalgia, maybe it is Netflix making me like the old show more than I should, but disregarding a few episodes that were completely unrelated to the books, I thought they did stories like the golden dragon, the story of Renfri, and Geralt and Ciri reuniting much much better than Netflix. It isn’t perfect but there was still a heart and care in that old show. The TV show version at least, the movie was a mess. Not perfect but I enjoy it far more than Netflix. Also yes “Alzur’s Legacy” is very good. Pół Wieku Poezji Później in Polish. It even brings back Zbigniew Zamachowski from the old Wiedźmin series as Dandelion/Jaskier.

As someone who just started reading the books (halfway through a time of contempt right now), something I feel the Netflix series has royally screwed up is the relationship between Geralt and Dandelion. They are best friends, two rapscallions getting into all sorts of trouble together. Sure Geralt gets annoyed with Dandelion at times but it is still very endearing. In the show they play on the troupe of the annoying scoundrel who constantly annoys the hero of the story, they make it seem like Geralt hates Dandelion and just wants him to leave him alone. Small detail but completely changes the way you view Geralt in the way he treats/speaks to Dandelion and the friendship the two of them share
I don't think it's a small detail at all. One of my favorite relationships from the series is their enduring friendship and loyalty. They are ride or die throughout. I abandoned the series on Netflix when Geralt left Jaskier on the mountain after telling him he ruined his life. Book Geralt would never! They made Geralt's character so emotionally constipated, it was insufferable and hard to watch.
The whole Yen and Ciri thing in the show just makes me sad because they have such a good relationship and times together in the books. (I'm halfway through book Time of Contempt at least) I quite enjoyed the animation in this.

Damn Matthew you're really taking this animation style to the next level, keep this up. Love all the attention to the detail like the facial features and the music.
The big things I caught: Geralt and Yennefer think of Ciri as their daughter in the source material/games, like a found family unit, so those scenarios where they put her in danger or sacrifice her are unthinkable. The wolf school of witchers isn't making any more witchers, so Vessemir wanting to put Ciri through the mutations makes no sense. Basically, the mutations have a 90% mortality rate, which means a lot of kids die just for the chance of making one witcher. The world doesn't really need witchers anymore, so the wolf school stopped making more. It's actually what puts the cat school in a bad light, they're still making more witchers, killing more kids, and they're working as hired assassins rather than monster hunters. Their whole morality system is questionable at best, giving them a bad reputation. Hope this gives some context to some of that! :D I'm not finished with the game yet so far, but I'm enjoying it a lot.
@@hawklegs6940 All they had to do was create original main character, maybe even from cat school and make our beloved characters apear here and there doing own things/sometimes helping main cast. @@Botar48 Not really, imho the whole destiny thing was very different. For example, in the show Geralt and Ciri only meet once, after they both look for each other - not really much of a destiny there. In the books, they meet each other by chance several times (first he just saw her, not knowing which one of the kids is her, or even if any of them is; it was an audience with the queen, who understandably denied any contact, let alone taking her, and Geralt was kinda relieved by that too; next time he brought her to Mousesack himself after randomly finding her in a druid forest), and the last time is literally another Child of Surprise thing (it's a pretty funny scene, because the guy who Geralt saved said that his wife is actually barren and can't have more children (which is why he agreed to the Law of Surprise), and then they arrive to the hut and his wife comes out and says "our three children will come home soon" and he's like "what three children? We had two?" and she says "I hope you won't be angry, I took in this little orphan from the druids..." and yes, that was Ciri), and that was after he decided to stop looking for her around Cintra. Their hug made more sense there, too, because they knew and talked to each other earlier. You can see how Geralt wasn't really aiming to get her, and their encounters were clearly all by destiny. Also the Jaskier & Geralt relationship is very skewed, Jaskier is treated very badly by Geralt for no reason. In the books it's very clear they're friends, even if they're kind of an "odd couple". It gets better in later seasons though.

I was growing up reading witcher books, so I was really hyped when they decided to make netflix serial for the witcher.

The whole Yen and Ciri thing in the show just makes me sad because they have such a good relationship and times together in the books. (I'm halfway through book Time of Contempt at least)
I quite enjoyed the animation in this.
Ciri even refers to her as mum, in the show they are more like step mum and step daughter, only amicable because Geralt wasn’t them to be
@@richardhobbs7360hahaha true, Yen tolerates Ciri at most then outright hates her in season 2. They try to make Yen a mother figure in season 3 but the damage to Yen’s characterisation was already too much to believably fix it. She tried to sacrifice Ciri ffs 😂
@@kingt0295 BuT sHe ChAnGeD hEr MiNd
Stupid series, stupid writers, perfect casting
@@richardhobbs7360 mediocre casting tbh, Yen looks like a 19yr old pretty girl not a let’s say 30 yr old beautiful respectable experienced woman Ciri and Geralt were alright though
@@kingt0295 TBF, she is 28 or 29 (no one knows her birth year, let alone date) so young when she was cast, but IMO, not THAT bad of a casting
If they went for a younger Ciri there wouldn’t be even a slight problem IMO
That’s basically what Disney, Netflix or Amazon do. Buy the source material and twist it until only the name remains
and profit from the hype they advertise and create
It sucks. And then people act surprised when I tell them that most Disney movies are overrated
Sounds like ea too
“Tom Clancy’s”
Evil can only corrupt after all.
"It sounds wonderful."
"...It was."
"I don't want to be Geralt anymore."
Well that socked me right in the kidneys when I least expected it. Might need to reread the books and replay the games now.
There is even a new quest with the new update so go for it.
Cavill was the only thing keeping that mess of a show alive
No, it was shit from the episode 1.
@@valdemariv394 it wasnt. The whole show yes, but Cavil as Geralt was enough of a reason to bear through. Its like Jackman being Wolverine, RDJ being Tony Stark, Tobey MAguire being Bully MAguire... it was good enough to bear through that BS of a storywriting - he was that authentic.
Netflix Witcher was 99% shit and that 1% of awesomeness was pure Cavil/Geralt.
@@UndisputedONE2 Cavil is a great Superman too but that doesn't change the fact that both Superman and the Witcher show are both flaming dog doodoo.
@@saltycat662 i agree on Witcher being dodo and Cavil doing great as both MC#s.
But i cant agree on MOS being bad. People feast on the show being to "dark and serious" to be a superman movie but i liked the portrayal of Superman in man of steel actually even as the best superman movie.
in MOS he is portrayed most accurately as he would be a planetkilling entity as he is. Im not even talking about Superman as a character but the sheer raw power of the fights and the destruction that comes with it.
Im not downplaying superman movies from golden era they are indeed amazing. I liked nearly all the adaptions.
as a comic nerd who likes to discuss on battle vines which protrayal of Supes is the strongest comparing him to other entites... MOS just feels right for me plotwise, visually and especially through Cavil. Plus in this case the writers didnt hate Superman like Netflix writers hate on the Witcher
.
@@valdemariv394 I read the books thanks to season 1 so only because of that, it was not a shit from episode 1 as you said.
Several episode is the first season are really good.
Geralt in the book: super talkative, eloquent, sassy, and sometimes acts like a brat when Regis schools him into being more friendly.
Geralt in show: ‘grunt’
And even then Cavil had to FIGHT to get them to let Geralt speak more
@@Nomadith while in S1 it was his decision to have Geralt talk less.. which is odd.. I wonder if the script was that bad that he'd rather not speak much or just felt that grunting is more Geralt-like for some reason
@@Patrix8558 I didn't recall it being his choice, if anything Interviews point to the contrary.
@@Nomadith yes, in interview it was said (by him or showrunner.. or I think it was mutual interview and they both said it) before release of S1 that it was his decision and then also theirs.
By the time S2 rolled around and after seeing the backlash, he pushed again, but in opposite direction, to give Geralt more lines.
But less talkative was his push in S1 too.
To be fair, he's not super talkative in the games. A lot of smalltalk and discussion about monsters and stuff, but I wouldn't call him talkative.
Wow! That was brilliant :D I had such a good laugh. I'm not watching Netflix Witcher-like series, so to me the real Witcher has the face and the voice of Michał Żebrowski.
"Vesemir would never even considered putting her life in danger" [...] "Sounds wonderful" :D
Love it and the detail! Even down to Geralt's speaking animations from the game
This is probably how it actually went down in Henry Cavill's mind.
“I don’t want to be Geralt anymore.” Probably what Henry Cavill said to himself after he saw how much Netflix changed the story.
Saddens me man, seeing how Passionate he is with this IP.
I love how they did an entire ad campaign on how Cavill is such a huge Witcher nerd, that he even went as far as to change prop designs to better fit the flair and style Geralt fought with in the games.
Everytbing that came to light proved that was bullshit. They didnt give a damn about Geralt's word.
Very accurate.... or should I say not?
Hard to say
Accurately inaccurate
That, "I'll do it if he won't," had me dyin'. 😆😆😆
BRILLIANT!!!
Nailed every aspect - the Liam Hemsworth at the end was icing on the cake.
So much respect, my good sir 🫡 ⚔️
Brilliant, "I don't wanna be geralt anymore" is on the spot... for once I am looking for a reboot , one that will actually be good for poor Henry and the story.
1:20 WHAT are you TALKING about?
Cavil-Geralt: "I wanted to do things right!... But they made me!"
Damn Matthew you're really taking this animation style to the next level, keep this up. Love all the attention to the detail like the facial features and the music.
@@mudshrooze It's not a cartoon filter, it's hand traced/drawn frame by frame. Takes a lot of time and patience, but overall pretty simple.
that feeling when I haven't touched either version, so this whole lore dump is incomprehencible to me
Might be a bit much lol
Maybe even making Geralt chase after protagonist, hunt him down and then going own way after finding protagonist hidden motive.
I've played 10 hours of witcher 3 and am lost as well.
@@freespeech3817 But then how would the writer staff prove they're better than everyone else?
That "not *about* to take your WORD for it" was so perfect lmao exactly how he says it
I still haven’t finished reading the 1st book and was already astonished at how different the source material is from the Netflix adaptation, even before watching this video…now, I’m positive that I should just try to forget everything presented by the TV show cuz literally 99% of it doesn’t matter
Eh scenes from first book was not all that much changed in first season of the show though.
@@tymondabrowski12 I said first book and first season. I haven't even read the rest yet I am procrastinating. Ciri didn't really appeared in the first book. Just the story of how Gerald earned her before her birth.
Called in the Cavillry for this show and even he couldn't save it.
I love how the mannerisms and way of speaking of game Geralt are spot on with his in-game model
I was so blown away that everyone loved the witcher Netflix series. I felt like I was crazy and alone telling people how it didn't make sense compared to the books or even the games which took creative liberties but did them in a way I could enjoy putting the actual canonical lore aside
I don't know anyone who "loves" it, best praise I heard is it's "ok". And that was before season 3.
Vesemir and Geralt did feel Witcher accelerants to Ciri which made Triss chew them out in the books. The show actually has that in common with the books
The irony is the first season of the Netflix series convinced to get the first two books because I couldn't believe the source material could be as medicore as the show. When the second season came out, I bought Blood of Elves after hearing about all the changes in the Netflix version.
You got so on-point with (game) Geralt's dialogue phrasing.
Like, if that scene happened in the game, that's exactly how the dialogue writers would phrase it out.
Never read the books because I thought it be too similar to the series, but now I realise just how much better they are!
Good lord. Holy crap. As a Pole, I felt terrible reading this.
The books are great, the game is not bad but it's no match for the original story.
Yeah no worries the books really have just surface level similarities with show definitely worht a read.
Before anyone here overpraise it, there are occasional passages of pure politics which may not be to your taste, depends on how much you like politics, so that's something to keep in mind.
@@Karak-_- why does it read like its a con when its a great wordlbuilding passages showing that even though Geralt influences world politics he is just a very small cog in a big machine. He is a protagonist of his story but not the main character of the world.
Netflix geralt being depressed since he was clearly the only sane person in his dimension.
Book!Geralt becomes depressed and a bit edgy at one point but his teammates are there to cheer him up and to keep him motivated.
Yooo, this was awesome. Got a few good laughs out of it. I wish I could feel as light-hearted about the actual series as I do this clip. But excellent work on this. Bravo!
"I don't wanna be Geralt anymore"
poor Cavill
What an amazing way to show the differences between them, while also showing why the original is superior.
I can imagine this whole exact scene playing inside Cavill's mind
The attention to the way game Geralt gestures, and even the way he speak is fantastic.
"Game Geralt"?? Where is he?
@chandllerburse737 you're wrong and you've probably never read "The Witcher" books if you say so
The ending turned this into art 😂
i wish they did like the game and just told more tales of the witcher, completely respecting the past work as canon
I love this so much 😂 I hate how Netflix did Eskel dirty he was always my next favorite Witcher
0:34 this is straight up game dialogue (maybe book to, but I can only attest for the third video game title) and the hand looks like the in-game 3D puppetry too
Man I remember being so excited for the show, those thoughts aged like fine milk lol
"Sounds.. wonderful"
"It was"
This is so perfect because although I desperately wanted to let the Witcher and I know that Cavill really wanted it to work I can imagine why he had to leave everything departed so badly and it just seemed to be getting worse not better
"This is why I hate portals" was just perfect 👏🏻
When Hemsworth entered the frame I DIED 🤣
That ending 😆
I love you included that awkward hand motion Geralt does in Witcher 3. It looks natural the first time you see it in game, but after the 10000th I can’t not notice it.
Game Geralt: Enough talk! Up for a round of Gwent?
Yup! Totally Netflixed! If you want good Witcher stories you gotta read! The graphic novels are my personal favorite.
Okay, now this was good. You make for a pretty damn fine Butcher of Blaviken, I gotta say.
Got the hand gestures down
I bought the book recently and I'm extremely excited to find out how right this video is!
One of the best and most well written animations I’ve ever watched
I remember watching the first season of the Netflix series and the only reaction was "wtf did i just watch", then some ppl told me the second season was way better so i decided to give it a shot, cause anyway "it couldn't be worst than the first" i thought... But it was even more ridiculous xD i really can't explain how it became popular, probably only for Cavill in tight pants :p
it was 100% the tight pants.
I honestly thought the first season was pretty good, second season was bad though
If you don't know nothing about the witcher, the first season is pretty good. On the second one you smell there's something wrong, but it may still fly under your radar if you don't know literally nothing about the novels/games.
Sad to know you paid for two seasons of that dumpsterfire
the main problem is they have destroyed characters that didn't need any touch. So, the people who never played the game or read the books never knew. But in 3rd season they start to realize that something isn't right.
2:00 At this point the REAL Gerald would see that something is very off because even a very shitty Dopler can't mix things this badly.
This is so real. Made me feel so sad for Henry though. Finishing line is the most Geralt thing ever ❤️
At least he proven that he isn't a Doppler - that one would answer questions perfectly fine
Well done at the end
