  • "Gamecocks Talk with Captain Will" delivers the latest updates and insights on the South Carolina Women's Basketball team, including news on recruitment and more.
Head Coach Dawn Staley's 2024 recruiting class is impressive, but will it rank as one of the best? Staley's first significant class in 2014 featured A'ja Wilson, Jatarie White, Jaydra Duckett, and Bianca Cuevas. In 2016, Tyasha Harris, Araion Bradshaw, and Mikiah Harrigan joined the team. The 2017 additions were Elisia Grissett, Bianca Jackson, and LaDazhia Williams. The 2018 class spotlighted Destanni Henderson and Victaria Saxton. The 2019 "freshie" class included Aliyah Boston, Zia Cooke, Laeticia Amihere, and Breanna Beal, while Eniya Russell came in 2020. Raven Johnson, Saniya Rivers, Sania Feagin, and Bree Hall joined in 2021. Ashlyn Watkins and Talaysia Cooper were the newcomers in 2022. And in 2023, Milaysia Fulwiley, Chloe Kitts, Tessa Johnson, and Sahnya Jah were welcomed.
The season starts with a match against the Michigan Women's Basketball team in Las Vegas on November 4th. Under Head Coach Dawn Staley, the team features dynamic players like Raven Johnson, Bree Hall, Chloe Kitts, and Ashlyn Watkins, with strong support from the bench, including MiLaysia Fulwiley, Tessa Johnson, Sania Feagin, and Sakima Walker. New recruits Joyce Edwards, Maddy McDaniel, and Adhel Tac add to the team's bright prospects for the season.

2021 class is in the lead right now with 2 titles. Undefeated season/ 3 career loses total. I believe 2023 class with lay and tessa will go 4 for 4 making them 1 of the all time great classes in wbb history. 2024 has the potential to get 3 or 4 titles.

Right on Cappy! Milaysia led the team in scoring 8 times last year. both Tessa and Chloe led the team 3 times each. And Joyce Edwards out played every other player on the court in all of those All-American, and the under 18 International basketball competitions. And I know because I watched them all.

Hey Captain. Great reflection on the talent that’s graced SC. I loved Bianca and her swag. Ty Harris butter. Loved Tiffany Mitchell and how she continued to grow. A’ja continues to develop. Her best skill has yet to be showcased. She’s not afraid to be stretched. So glad Zia stopped pressing and just played. Come on basketball season.

Captain Will, Victoria Saxton was a role player. But so was Zia Cooke, and so was Aliyah Boston. I get so sick and tired of the basketball pundits always talking about stars and role player, as if the starring role is not a role. Every player on every team is a role player. And gue4ss what? Roles change. That is why South Carolina was so successful last year - they had so many players who excelled at different roles. The basketball p[undits recognized that South Carolina often had three different point guards on the court at the same time. What they failed to realize is that Tessa Johnson is a pretty darned good point guard if the team needs her to fulfill that role. I saw Ashlyn Watkins run the break a few times last years, and she did a pretty good job. Calling players who are not team stars "role players" is very misleading and somewhat demeaning. I wish we would stop it, because all roles need to be fulfilled for a team to be successful. God bless you, man.

My brother cook can't make plays when they needed to make plays she doesn't play defense well at all only thing she wants to do is Jack up shots she needs to be a better Defender man or man and she needs to be able to know how to run a offense now the young lady who is 6 ft 5 in who could play Everything she can't do nothing for Atlanta right now because they need 100 to defend she can't defend well they need her to rebound she don't want to get in there and mix it up they asked her to shoot the short mid-range shot she don't consistently hit it there it is

We are not sleeping on Strong. She is good but Joyce Edwards is HER and our team is solid. We have 2 starting 5 squads. We will see Strong and UCONN in Jan/Feb 2025 at the CLA and will send them back home with an L. We have 2 generational players on our team - Joyce and Malaysia.
