This is possibly the best rendition of this song I've ever heard - compares to the concert at King's College from 2009. The ending is just breathtaking.

I played it for my mother as she was passing over. It embodies the magnificence of God and the heavens.

This, in my opinion, is Lauridsen's masterpiece. And in the masterful hands of Paul Salamunovich and the beautiful voices of his Master Chorale, it is truly a gift from heaven for us all to treasure. Thank you.

I will never forgot the time we sang this song(nearly) perfect(imho) in Chorus, our instructor had turned out the lights and we sang, and it sounded beautiful. It might have been the best we had ever done it that year. Thanks for sharing the song!

@Friedagroper Thank you for the info on the performance! It's really neat to read about where this came from. (and I totally agree on the going flat part. but the good thing is that I didn't notice it until like my 5th time listening to it) Thanks again for the info :)

The best of the best of the best. Lauridsen is best with the Los Angeles Master Chorale. Too bad iTunes/Apple Music took it off of their online store.

I sang with Paul in 1967 at St Norbert’s College in Wisconsin. It was a choral workshop weekend. Wonderful experience!

@Friedagroper yes, you are correct that the los angeles master chorale premiered this in 1994. However, the master chorale did not record this song in the bridges auditorium. This recording of o magnum as well as others that were recorded on this cd, pictured above, were in fact recorded in the sacred heart chapel on the campus of loyola marymount university in los angeles. Also, in what part of this recording r they flat? they sound on pitch to me.

@iczerman polyphony does a great rendition of this too. they have a really nice clean sound so u can hear the inner chords and harmonies a little better than the la master chorale version. However i would still have to give the nod to this version just because i feel its truer to the original intent of the composer. Polyphony's version lacks a sense of line, movement and phrasing that the la master chorale version has. i also am not really a fan of the brighter sound of british choirs

@northb100 i personally find the university of utah performance to b inferior. O magnum was written by lauridsen specifically for this choir and so they perform it exactly how lauridsen intended it to sound whereas the utah singers dont. The utah singer's basses sound way too buzzy and don't have the depth of sound these basses have. Also much of this song is rooted in chant, which this choir's conductor is an expert in and has the choir sing based on that, whereas the utah singers don't
