A Simon Williams Speed Run Game: 'So, hello everyone, I'm Grandmaster Simon WIlliams, and welcome to another speed run game in this series...I'll be looking for mistakes by my opponent and guide you through how to win at this level...okay, so here we go...lets get the opening done, and by the looks of it my opponent has already played this quite badly...very bad devopment, whereas I have excellent development already...not really too good for an opponent at this level, really, should be doing better and now I have complete control of not only the centre but I have a plan already...my opponent continues to play poor moves and their time control is terrible, rushing every move...I should have this wrapped up fairly quickly and then I can go over their mistakes...oh wait...hang on...I missed that...very good move there from my opponent...basically punishing me for overlooking something I completely missed...but nevermind... the game goes on...I should still wrap this up quite quickly...I have a MUCH better position...ah..no! What was that?! I played that terribly wrong...totally miscalcalated...and calcalation is KEY at these level games...this is all going WRONG!...Ahhh..NO! Wait!...WHAT AM I DOING!? QUICK...TIME IS RUNNING OUT! TYPICAL OF ME! ...Another good move there from my opponent...THIS HAS ALL GONE PEAR-SHAPED!! 😑😮...WHAT IS HAPPENING!!? OH NOOOOO...I'M LOSING! ...I CAN''T BELIEVE IT!😱 THIS HAS ALL TURNED INTO A DISASTER!!😱IT'S DOWN TO THE WIRE!! ....AAAARRRGH! A SCRAPED A DRAW!! NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! THAT WAS TERRIBLE! 😱'
I've watched lots of chess tutorial TH-cam vids over the years... from St. Louis Chess instructors to Finegold to Jan Gustafvsen, etc. Simon has become my favorite. Easy to understand and entertaining. Keep up the good work, sir!
This was very helpful for me . Im breaking from winning on other oponents blunders and its just this kind of dynamic approach that will push me through. I feel it necessary more and more each day. clear explanations behind the positional moves. Thank you very much.
These games are like comedy sketches that begin all professional and calm and descend into mad chaos. I love it, but perhaps you should increase the time or do more in-depth analysis after the game where you explain your moves.
Daniel Naroditsky 'by far' has the most educational chess videos on TH-cam IMO, but in terms of fun and personality I agree that Simon is on another level.
Simon. Please do longer time controls when you’re teaching in the speed run. Make sure there is also increment. As amusing as your frequent difficulties are against lower rated players and as much as it gives me hope to beat a grandmaster one day by finding myself in a game with you whilst you’re teaching, it does limit what one can learn to openings, the first part of the middle game and the importance of playing a time control that gives you enough time to not screw up so much.
Studying pawn structure and cleaning up positional play was how I went from 1700 to 2100. Simon is correct that is the big weakness at that level. Most players around there still have the idea of just trying to get aggressive in bad positions in hopes of some kind of complication to induce a blunder somewhere. In so doing they make their bad positions worse.
Must say I have watched some other SpeedRun videos from other GM’s and they aren’t as good as yours Ginger. There’s something in the way you do yours that feels right. I can’t explain it. Nonetheless, great work and thanks for your time and videos!
5 minute time control is nowhere near enough for these videos. 10 minute games minimum like Daniel Naroditsky does so you can explain more. The first game was fun but was just a total farce by the end
This was one of the worst games I've seen you play. You had his queen trapped and missed it. That's why you got into trouble. But I love your content. I always receive great info. 👍

Hahaha! That's why I love blitz. Such good intentions
2 vids in two days. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!!

My favourite chess content on 'tinternet is a GingerGM Speed Run video. Thanks Simon!
Thanks for the info! Very helpful!

By far, the most under-appreciated chess channel on TH-cam.
Algorithm programmers must be biased.
Most entertaining and informative speed runs on TH-cam, great work as ever Simon 👌

After watching hundreds of hours of Simon's games, I think I can ALMOST lose on time as well as he does!
"It looked kind of OK until it didn't. I suppose that's life, isn't it?" How very true.
Simons games speak to me on a personal level
Hi Simon, love your shows ❤️
Thanks Simon, keep on keeping on!

An avalange of top-class videos

Your Awesome Simon🙏🙏

Ginger this old starling was famished
the difference between Hikaru 2800 and Simon 2600 vs 1950 elo players is immense. Hik was botez gambiting these players
true but Simon has never been a great speed blitz player; nothing against him whereas Hicky's specialty is blitz so you'll notice a huge difference.
Hikaru is like 350 Elo higher than Simon, not 200. But Simon is still a good player of course. Chess is a tough game!
At what rating level do you think that players stop making blunders on a routine basis?
The first one was a mcdonnell rather than a grand Prix . Odd a 2000 wouldn't know to play nc3 first
In the first game 2Nc3 is better, then 3f4, preventing 2..d5 in the process, and still getting the desired structure.
i will alway try to support! jobava i like but i have not mastered it! hope the new one will help to improve more!!?
Simon, it's definitely entertaining but maybe it is time to switch to a longer time format? No shame in that.
That is what I was thinking. As the quality of the opposing players improves, more time is required, even for Simon.
Missing you at the moment si!
Let's goooo
Keep making videos
simon missed he had queen trapped
When he's good he's very very good but when he's bad he's awful!
5:30 Bg4 wins queen, right?
I saw that too, he actually had the queen trapped earlier at 4:55 but took en passant...
5 minute time control is nowhere near enough for these videos. 10 minute games minimum like Daniel Naroditsky does so you can explain more. The first game was fun but was just a total farce by the end

Cheers pal. Lovely video.
