Fran lied about her age
Fran was definitely not 29, a running joke in the series is that we never find out her actual age. The closest we ever came was Sylvia confirming that Fran is over 35. In real life, Fran Drescher and Charles Shaunnesy (Maxwell) are only a couple of years apart, so I assume Fran is around the same age in the show.
She was 29 for at least 6 years that we can be sure of.

I love how she really did invest in the kids, they weren't just a plot device for her to spend more time with their dad, she really and truly cared about how they were doing and making them feel included and heard. She wasn't there for the nanny position but she was a mom from the start.

@@kylewilkins6149 You have to remember that Maxwell was still grieving from the loss of Sara, which undoubtedly affected all aspects of his life -including his ability to care for his children - and although wealthier than many widowers, he still had to work and make a living.
An NYC version of Mary Poppins. Without the talking umbrella….. unless that was supposed to be Niles’ job.
One other way to tell how well this show worked: no one got replaced throughout the 6 years of the series. They all had such great chemistry. ^^
They changed the layout of the first floor in the actual series so the pilot was not perfect ;)
But seriously, not only did no one get replaced, they manage to hide CC's pregnancy which allowed them not changed CC's personality. Definitely one of my favorite show of the era which is still a bit surprising to me since I know I was not in the target demographic. I was in my mid twenties to early thirties when this show first aired and I'm pretty sure no writer of the show every lost sleep over how to get more black dudes in their late 20s to watch the show:)

The entire layout of the front room; from screen left to screen right. Also the staircase went from angled to curved. Its beautiful.
The fact that the kids including Sheffield were all sad and miserable until Fran came along and changed their lives for the better. Even Niles. I just loved how she came in and brightened everyone's hearts.

The only difference is that Fran has a nasally voice personality.
The thing I always loved about Fran was how people tried to put her down because of her "class" and it always just rolls right off whether she intentionally ignored it or it went over her head and she always absolutely stops the person trying to put her down... it's lovely and refreshing and a real testament to her confidence

The reason why CC hated Fran was that the moment Fran walked in, Max lost all interest in C.C. You see it all happen at the party, then C.C. gloating during the fight about Maggie’s kiss.
This was a very strong pilot! Nobody was replaced; just the set was changed for the mansion
Noticed the mansion change.
The only thing that didn't change about it was the first shot of Maxwell's office.
You also didn't see that other office set again after the Pilot, where Maxwell finds Maggie kissing Eddie, and later on when Niles tells him that Fran is actually what he needed.
The first poignant thing I noticed about the Pilot is that Fran doesn't cry when Danny dumps/fires her after 3 years. But she cries when Mr Sheffield fires her after just one day

When you’re Gen Z and realize Jessie was pretty much a kids version of The Nanny.
You could say “a woman goes to Manhattan to find a better life, and ends up becoming the nanny for a rich family’s wacky children, living with them and their know-it-all butler” and it would literally describe both shows.
The Nanny was a kids show too. Just not Disney Channel level

Agree. Proper introductions of the main cast, funny jokes, genuine emotional moments, perfect pacing. And the chemistry was there from the start.
I genuinely think this is a perfect pilot. All the main cast, and even some side characters like Val and Sylvia, get well established, we know their personalities and relationships with the other characters, pretty much nothing about them got retconned moving forward like many sitcoms did. We got a perfect blend of comedy and serious, and it set up the dynamic for the whole show.
The only character missing is YETTA

I loved how Fran stood up to Mr. Sheffield after he told Maggie to go to her room. After only working there a few days, Niles saw the impact Fran had on Mr. Sheffield and his kids. Glad he humbled himself to ask her to return to work.

You could tell from there first meeting Niles was going to have Fran's back and that he saw in her exactly what they needed

The nanny was one of best 90s sitcoms. It has perfect balance of being the family and adult show.
I love how Fran is so relaxed and confident she comes into breakfast with her night clothes and dressing gown on .
I love how Fran always genuinely helped the children.
I love how she is more upset after spending less than one weekend with the children and being fired than she was when her boyfriend of 3 years broke up with her AND fired her. It just goes to show how much deeper her relationship with them was.

Those kids gave Fran a purpose in life while her boyfriend just strung her along for years and didn't commit to her.
Usually there's always adjustments to the characters after a pilot. But this pilot is just like any other future episode. Perfect first episode. Fran is beautiful and hilarious. Love this show.
Knowing the horror she went through not that long before creating this show is mind blowing.

Between the way they talked about her at breakfast, then her massaging his shoulders, him giving her flirty compliments on her appearance at the party. All of which stopped in an instant when he saw the red dress, and C.C.’s immediate jealousy in response.

It’s a small moment, but I like how at 11:12, it’s probably the first time Maggie has smiled in awhile. It’s awesome what a bit of kindness can do.

I never noticed in the pilot the mansion was flipped, in later episodes the stairs and entrance are on the right side
The stairs are also changed into curved stairs instead of angled
They remodeled.
It’s pretty common for shows to use already existing sets from old shows in the pilot, then build a specific set if the show gets picked up. Why spend the time and money to build a full set for a pilot, when most shows never get past the pilot.

I think this pilot was one of the best examples of how to set up a show from the get go
Every character is established with their personality and character traits right away and in some cases with only a few scenes needing to do so
We get to know who C.C babcock is, Who Niles is, and who the kids and Fran and Maxwell are in a few scenes and or a few web written situations.
The conversation between Niles nd Maxwell shows their dynamic, Niles and C.C.’s duality is well placed
this was a perfect pilot episode and literally set up the show and the characters quite well.
I do believe that some shows do need to find themselves over the course of a few episodes, this one however, was perfect from the get go.
The show did evolve somewhat. C.C. became more of a neurotic train-wreck in subsequent episodes and season one was somewhat grounded in reality, while the rest of the seasons were more satirical and absurdist.

Helen F. I gotta say C.C. is my third favorite. She is definitely a “wasp” type personality but the show gave her more meaning and depth than just an outright snooty person.
The best part of this is how Niles knew that Fran was just what the family needed from the get go. Between their banter when Fran said she was 29 towards the beginning and then telling Mr. Sheffield that Fran was what they'd been needing near the end of the episode, you could see the platonic chemistry between him and Fran and I love that so much about this episode!
You know how so many great sitcoms take a few episodes to get their legs. Say what you want about the Nanny but man did this show really hit the ground running.
My understanding was the show started with mediocre ratings but when summer reruns started the ratings climbed. Notice how Brightons character changed from the Bugs Bunny smart aleck after the first season. Good writing pays dividends, they always had it.
Love The Nanny. It's a simple sitcom that everyone can understand even young kids like me at that time. It's warmth and lovely.

I always liked this show. It was honest about what it was. Never took itself too seriously and just made for a fun time. That said, the Niles and CC banter was comedic GOLD!
I never get tired of watching Nanny and her life. Absolutely great to watch it again after several years.

Some seasons are available on “Pluto TV” and “Tubi”. Both are free streaming services. Get a ROKU box, you can download both channels and a lot more. You won’t regret it. 😉
