      My question is if Kane didn't like LaLonde, then why resign in Detroit this past off-season. He could have gone anywhere but he chose to stay in Detroit. I don't believe it was Kane, I think LaLonde had everyone overthinking everything and it was a disaster.

    If Kane got Lalonde fired, that would indicate he is locker room leader for sure.
    Facts are Todd Mclellan IS the one with the actual successful coaching pedigree and the respect of his players as well.
    Babcocks Head coach career started in Anaheim replacing Bryan Murray and being on an already good team that lost in the finals the year he got there.
    The NEXT season under HIS control, they missed the playoffs.
    Then, insanely, Detroit picked him up since they weren't doing much better and in 3 years went from barely playoff bound to winners.
    Key note Todd Mclellan was beside him for ALL of this.
    Then they won the cup and look what happened the very next year and subsequent years afterwards.
    Todd got a better job offer from san Jose and left and Babcock's coaching skills REALLY surfaced.
    Lalonde's pedigree is being an assistant on a decent team that won a cup with a shortened schedule because of the pandemic.
    All this is on that hockey DB or whatever.

    • @paulwt9783
      @paulwt9783 10 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      @ McLellan is not Scotty Bowman or anything resume-wise but he is obviously a much more accomplished and veteran head coach than Lalonde. Getting hired 4 different times is itself an accomplishment and tells you something. The NHL is full of coaching retreads but if you really bring nothing as a coach, you don't get 4 bites at the apple.

      @ No one really gets to the levels of Bowman when it comes to coaching so have to stop your bar raising there.
      Mclellan has the more efficient resume supporting him , the more competent one, one with successes in more than one team.
      The players might have forgotten McLellans ability, but i guarantee management did not.
      That alone says wonders about HIS coaching prowess alone.

    The whole month of December I could just see in Larks and Kaners demeanors that this was just a mess, and that the players (specifically them two) were just over him. I really feel like they finally sat down with Steve and told him he needs to do something about this lol. Amazing seeing the difference in how this team has played since Todd came in. Kind of is a testament to how done the players were with the previous regime. No one in the organization will ever admit that publicly, though lol.

      Yzerman and Larkin are too closely allied. I think Lalonde was not allowed to criticize Larkin's limitations bc he's Yzerman's boy he's building around. I think McLellan gets Larkin's respect. In short I'm speculating Larkin decided he didn't like Lalonde's style and he was a negative force on the team. While his stats were ok you could see major mistakes in his plays. Could Larkin have acted like a spoiled brat?

    • @jeromemayday1871
      @jeromemayday1871 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I don't think it had anything to do with Larkin acting like a spoiled brat, it was identifying the problem and fixing the issue!.. Larkin isn't getting any younger and seen there was still a chance to save the season and get a playoff berth..in short, Lalonde had them playing a brand of hockey that the roster wasn't built for & exposed their weaknesses.. imo, just to try to get their goals against average down from last year.. I think Lalonde would have been happy if they were losing every game 1-0 or 2-1 he would've been very satisfied!!

      @ no. you don't screw over a legend and mess w his career and not give him what he earns. Kane last year earned at minimum DeBrincat as his linemate this year. and honestly he probably earned Larkin and DeBrincat both. their top line together last year was dominant, by far the team's best. and Kane last year scored exactly 1 goal of his 20 without either Larkin or Cat on the ice. yet he showed up for work this year and on day 1 of camp was told he was playing w JT Compher and Vlad Tarasenko. that is bull. and it continued even as the Ray Larkin Cat line was awful, outscored 13-8 and generally stinking up the joint, besides costing you the 2nd line bc Kane can't play w those guys. but Lalonde out of nepotism for Raymond kept using it.
      Kane did not start playing/producing again when Lalonde was fired. he started playing/producing again 5 games BEFORE Lalonde was fired - when he got put w DeBrincat and Copp. he had 2/2/4 in Lalonde's last 5 games, all of it at 5v5. the final team collapse that led to him finally being done happened bc in his 2nd to last game, vs Montreal, he randomly did a shift where he took Cat away from Kane again and put him back w Larkin and Ray. the team immediately quit playing. the whole team. they had had enough. EVERYONE was tired of the lineup nonsense and the favoring of Ray and mistreatment of Kane w the lineups. everyone.

    NHL teams fire coaches because its a hard cap and everyone has some sort of trade protection. It's all a GM can do at a certain point.
    NFL can restructure deals, trade players, cut guys, etc
    NBA is really just 5-10 teams that can win a championship and everyone else sucks.
    MLB is a lot like the NBA. Only some teams have a chance. No reason to fire your coach if you have no good players.
    NHL is as cloae to parity as it gets. 20 teams can make a run/yr. They all see themselves as having a chance.

    With team parity because of the salary cap and the salary cap making it hard to move players. The main change you can make is with the coach. Especially with all of the no movement clauses players get to reduce their cap hit. It becomes a nightmare to move someone who is underperforming. You always have to make a deal with an team in a rebuild that knows their cap space is valuable to you. Many teams will trade a player away for basically nothing or have to send a high draft pick or prospect.

    I've never played hockey on any level, so I have no idea here. At the NHL level, shouldn't the coach be able to say, "Play the trap defense," and the players should know what that means and what they need to do? Even the rookies fresh off a draft have been playing their whole lives and will have played a trap defense for another coach. They should know, shouldn't they?

      Actually trap is very uncommon at lower levels. They should know how to do it but alot of teams don’t utilize it. Some college teams do. But it was pioneered in the NHL and it really only ever comes to play in the league. I played some junior hockey and we ran it one season and no one was able to because they’d never seen it before other than on tv. But yes in theory you should know how to play it by the time you’re in the NHL lol

      @BoboMcBooboy 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

      I think the problem is everything is so split second at this level... It's always one thing to break down this film after the fact... But try doing this against other NHL players, at split second levels... It's a whole other thing entirely from even the AHL...
      One way I can explain it, is as a Jets fan, We have defensemen we try to bring into the lineup, And for example it was Heinola, in his first game was against Minnesota after coming up from the AHL...
      They're a tough team, But they aren't necessarily the most feared in the league by any means... And one of our commentators was saying at one point that "it's a little unfair for him to have to face their best player (kaprizov) In his very first game...
      But that's the entire thing... You can shelter guys at the AHL level... At the NHL level they WILL be exposed if they aren't ready. Other teams will specifically send their best players out to attack the most inexperienced... It's about being able to adjust on the fly in a lot of ways... Because other teams will KNOW how to attack a trap defense at an NHL level... At least the top 20/25 teams or so...

    • @BoboMcBooboy
      @BoboMcBooboy 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      In a lot of ways, for however well you think you just coached your team, You will now have to watch and see if the other coach across from you got his guys more prepared to play then yours, And if his strategies/systems are better... If his assistant set up a better game plan, etc etc... some teams can adjust for one game, or against a certain style of defense better than others, other teams can have strengths and weaknesses that are different than other teams, So it could just be luck of the draw that you're going to have to verse some teams that have styles that are just set up to defeat you, while you're set up to beat other teams...
      Other coaches are going to try their best to undo everything you just taught, and make you look like a fool...

      My personal two cents is that because the salary cap is so strict, a team relies much more on chemistry and structure than any other big league sport, you can’t just overload a team with superstars in the NHL like you can the NBA or MLB so coaching strategy can literally make or break a team

      And to further add to my point this is also why the playoffs are such a wildcard in the NHL, all the teams are so evenly stacked that pretty much any team that makes the playoffs has a legitimate shot to win the cup

    The NHL and NBA also have 82 games each, so I think that's the only real, fair statistical comparison.
    Compared to a league like the NFL and it's regular season schedule, both have literally 5x more sample size for a coach to be judged, and given 2nd chances.
    Although when compared to MLB, which has pretty much twice as many regular season games as the NHL and NBA, the NHL doesn't look too bad.
    I think it's blatantly evident when comparing only those 2 leagues with one another that the NHL can be assuredly diagnosed with a coaching tenure problem.

Now if you don't skate both ways you don't play and I could see Kane coming up with a lower body injury and being done for the year.

    What I truly believe it is, is that these millionaires don't try as hard anymore because they know what to expect from their current coach and are complacent. Once a new coach comes in, suddenly a fire is lit because they need to impress the new coach for playing time so they play harder. I believe that is the predominant reaaon.

But like you shouldnt be backchecking in the first place if you did it right so like initial positioning is great but if you’re not gonna teach position after the first move your done that’s it

    To start off the Wings grossly overachieved last season setting up unrealistic expectations for fans which didnt help as they are still a fringe playoff team regardless of the coach. Sadly for the Red Wings the firing was likely made too late and likely results in them missing the playoffs by 4-8pts. The problem with Lalonde and the Red Wings was pretty obvious Lalonde is clearly a greta coach he just had the complete wrong players for how he likes to coach. Looking at that dcore you cant play a defensive favoured style you have to go all out on offense and hope you can outscore your opponent which is often not a sustainable or successful way to play but thats how the Wings have been built so far. Really sucks for Lalonde cause I think he would be a great coach for many teams Detroit mightve been the worst fit for his style.

Last year, this team was a threat until Larkin got hurt and instead of a coach backing his players, he said the refs probably got it right. I believe in that moment, he lost the room. Lalondes too much of a kiss ass and buddy buddy instead of telling it like it is.

As good as Crosby, Malkin and Letang have been, they're nowhere near their former selves and the players around them are taking on roles they don't have the talent for. It's really not that complicated.

       I’d have to agree with @kibagami25. The Detroit Red Wings were in a similar situation before our new GM, Steve Yzerman, took over in 2019; we were beyond bad because we didn’t start the rebuild when we should have and the Penguins are doing something very similar, Since you're new to the sport @Kibagami you may not know, but the Wings in the early 2000s, specifically in 2002, probably had one of, if not the greatest team of all time. I think like 10 HOF players, like Steve Yzerman, who is one of the best players ever; Dominik Hasek, who is one of the best goalies of all time; Nicholas Lindstrom, who is the greatest Swedish player ever and one of the best defenders ever to play; and Pavel Datsyuk, who was in his rookie season that year, who changed the way people puck handle by the end of his career, just to name 4. We won 4 Stanley Cups from 1996 to 2008 and made the cup final a couple more times than that. In 2016, most of the players I’d just mentioned had either retired or were just about to; it was clear it was time for us to rebuild, but our former GM, Ken Holland, decided we needed to make the playoffs 25 years in a row, we did accomplish that and lost in the first round to the young Tampa Bay Lightning, who ironically, the GM was Steve Yzerman before he came back to be the GM of Detroit, but we haven’t made the playoffs since, and because our GM was focused on making the playoffs, he traded young prospects and draft picks away for older players, and by the time we missed our first playoffs, our only stars we had left were Zetterberg and Dylan Larkin in his sophomore season. Even after we missed the playoffs and it was clear we needed to rebuild, Ken Holland wasn’t 100% on board, and even ended up making one of the worst draft choices ever in taking Flip Zaldina instead of Quinn Hughes. So by the time he left and Steve took over in 2019, we had 0 prospects that could be stars besides Dylan Larkin and no older star players left. I tell you all this because, for Pittsburgh, your GM is in a situation a lot like Ken Holland's; your players are some of the best of all time and are HOF worthy without a doubt, but if your GM doesn't rebuild now or soon, your future could be very bad if your GM doesn’t understand that this team more than likely will not win a cup anytime soon and needs to start the rebuild now and not wait 3-4 years from now when all your stars are retired. The Penguins could miss the playoffs 8 years in a row like we have, and the Wings are not even guaranteed to even make it this year, but we do have a chance.

    It’s not a big surprise here. You’ve even paying attention long enough. We are in the midst in a big changing of the guard.
    The NHL Athlete has evolved a lot over time and coaches who have failed to adapt to the evolving significant variables aren’t cutting it.
    Let’s look at 1972. Back then if you brought your son who was a 2nd round draft pick to a golf club you’d get a few compliments but they’d make fun of you for having a kid who is playing a boys sport and getting paid less than their kid Chester who is in finance.
    Now that professional sports are valued differently and the League minimum is significantly more than the league average in 1972 (even adjusted for inflation). You have a very different athlete.
    The old school method of using gaslight methods to control a player is not only wrong it’s not necessary. Coaches need to CATER to the talent because the talent proved they have the intestinal fortitude and talent to be there in the first place. You can cut those reindeer games and focus on other things to build a team.
    That’s why you’re seeing this. It won’t continue. Just firing a coach isn’t the significant variable. A coach understanding the optimal way of coaching the current talent is the significant variable. You’re not gonna see a guy like Mike Keenan come in and save a season.
