“im allowed to say this because im homosexual but a little homophobia is hot.” LMAOOOOO kodiak having some sprinkle of internalized homophobia would fit w his character. just finished this book in one day and i agree, though the characters weren't so relatable the mystery part was really good and made it a page turner. love ur perpetually sarcastic/humorous (?) way of speaking. i did only skim and basically ignored the “welcomed” convo bc [vaguely gestures to nothing] i think it was unnecessary and didn't think/interest me much, but i found it interesting what u talked about here and made me think about it more. this was worth the watch (also as a reader and a not-native english speaker i love when you'd use the google voice for the correct pronunciation 😭)
Wow you’re editing is great! So many books are like “we swear it’s not the US! Promise see we changed the name…Nothing to do with the Cold War at all now ” lol
I adore everything about this video! I think you hit the nail on the head here. I wish more readers (and creators) would think about this topic more and realize how intrusive sexual questions are harmful to queer people. I would love for the author to watch this video and hear his comments, because you make such wonderful points!
Thank you a lot for this comment! So glad you enjoyed it. The thing with this book/quote is that I'm sure the author had really good intentions, but still it fell flat, and that's in many ways even more interesting then a simple homophobic passage. These subjects are so complex that even things written by queer people can end up, yeah... heteronormative af
What an interesting take! I thought that scene was totally ironic, with Ambrose's dialogue written to sound kind of obnoxious to highlight the that the Federation is kind of stuck up and hoity toity for no reason even though they're hypocritical.
This is so great! As a writer myself, I'm obsessed with hearing people's views on queer desire, and queer sex, as all of my writing has some depiction of sex. Tack så mycket for your video, lots to think about for me.
I think... The book was a "sci-fi" first and then the "romance" come second. You are right that the romance feel rush, but I also think that it only play a part to push the plot forward. Kodiak being a little bit gay closet would be fun, but I don't think it's never the main focal point of the story. And the way they only ever develop a more romantic relationship after they found out about their situation is, I think more than enough reason for me, at least
I'd love one of these analysis about the subject Top/Bottom but in lesbian fanfiction. It's something that bothers me a lot because it's falling in the same trap of heteronormativity. Love your analysis. Subscribed!
Seeing the welcoming/donating scene written out makes it so much worse omg. I listened to the audiobook and while I was still cringing a little, the voice actor did a good job of portraying Ambrose as more facetious/understanding the way he was coming off
Just finished reading the book and I have to agree with every word you said on you video. To be honest, I consider that to be the minor [of many] problems of this story, narratively speaking. As I finished it, I went online to try and see what the general opinion was, and unsurprisingly (and sadly) I found out that a lot of people are amazed by It... I enjoyed the premise of the story, not a big fan of the characters, though. There was a good portion of depiction of what was happening to them, and too little of their characters being developed/connecting. Therefore, dialogs sounded mostly cringy and somewhat forced. And that's on the author account. The story is good, but had serious narrative problems. It felt like the author had a lot of good ideas about where he wanted the story to go, but didn't quite executed them to perfection. Which led to a lackluster finale. As Stehpen King says "writing is rewriting", this book could've used a bit of rewriting and editing.
Well agree with you back. The more I think about this book the more I feel how underdeveloped the characters where. As said in the video I really liked the idea/the premiss/the story, and I enjoyed the book, but a lot of the emotional effect the book could have had disappeared since the relationship didn't work. We got to be a part of them getting to know each other the first time yeah, but what about the other times? I was just supposed to copy paste those interactions? You put it into words very well and I agree the ending was very rushed, anti-climatic and a bit silly tbh. Thanks a lot for your comment!
@@obviouslyqueer When you talked about how he missed the mark on challenging how we think about tops/bottoms, I remembered something I always have in mind when I'm come across a story that could've been better. I reckon as readers our minds are a high value real estate... Well written books don't give me the head space to be editing the writing/story/structure. And whenever this happens, it's at the expense of the suspension of disbelief, and the reading tend to be rather less immersive, if at all. I wonder, have you gone through something similar while reading it!? Editing the story while reading it. That donated/welcomed thing made me shed tears of blood when I read it. Thanks a lot for your reply! I really love your content, the editing is superb, the humor, the references. I learn a lot from them. Fantastik!
@@adhdaniel I missed this comment, thanks so much again for your kind words! It mean the world! I really like the way you put it, how a really good book doesn't give you the space needed to start editing it. Cause I do that to, a lot. Sometimes I catch myself starting to create a completely different scene all together, something I would find more fitting or compelling.
Haha always love your videos and this is no different. Love the cuts to the “states”. Preeettty wild radical inclusion… I agree with you. I assumed it was like a comical translation error when I first heard about this.
Shifted to a much more serious discussion on the topic after the start and I thought it was really thoughtful. Thanks for your thoughts. I thought this was a great essay.
Thank you so much, I'm glad you liked it. It means a lot. The scene do feels comical but the subject is not, so I wanted to make it both comical and quite serious. Have you read the book? Or just heard about the scene?
@@obviouslyqueer I have only heard of the scene, the book sounded faaaamiliar, probably because the “conversation” (on Twitter) was mostly dragging the terms.
