I ♥️ ATK! I'm an American living in Ireland for 5 years. There are so many things we can get in the US that I can't get here, like sweetened coconut and vanilla wafers! The good thing is I've learned to make them from scratch and have been able to expand the pallettes of my Irish friends. Thank you, ATK, for your videos. 👏
I own A LOT of OXO products, and I can attest to their greatness. Sure, like many brands, there's some hits & misses, but for the most part, I've loved everything I've bought from them.
I have been watching episodes for 2 days and haven't found a ringer yet. Thank you for all the testing so that what we get is flavorful and scrumptious: great recipes, reasoning, and instructions!
I haven't had a good coconut cream pie like my mom used to make in forever. Matter of fact, I just stopped asking in restaurants. Now this is a coconut cream pie worth the work and the calories! Thank you!
@@fjp9 It's like milk vs cream, the cream has a lot more fat than the milk. You can whip coconut cream into whipped cream. Coconut milk is much thinner and less fat.
I appreciate that they used their most-recommended pie server from the gear review segment on the coconut cream pie that they made in the final segment.
While whipped cream is popular and delicious, a wonderful variation is to reserve the whites from the eggs used in the custard and make a meringue to top the pie. I love meringue and prefer the airy contrast as topping for cream pies.
I think incorporating coconut milk in the custard and coconut cream in the whipped cream would give this delicious looking pie more of a coconut punch. What do you guys think? Would the custard work with coconut milk?
@America's Test Kitchens Use Pumice to clean the Grill. Wire Bristle BBQ brushes have been known to leave bristles behind and get ingested. This then can perforate the Intestines.
Thanks, the chops were great! Coconut Cream Pie was my mother Mary Lou's favorite pie (tho' custard is mine..among cream pies). Ashley gave it a great send off with this recipe. RMH/Ohio
I know quite a bit about U.S. regional BBQ but I _always_ forget about Monroe County pork steaks. I've never tried it. Today's recipe and results look pretty awesome. 🐖👍
Tosh T. With my husband's help, we grilled these pork chops. I'm a vegetarian, but an unselfish one, so I will cook meat for him. He loves these pork chops, but said they were a bit too salty. Don't use two tablespoons which the recipe calls for. Remember when she cut the tendons in the meat? That works. The pork stayed flat. They did not curl. My husband said maybe a tablespoon and one teaspoon. He also said a little sugar may have tamed the salt. Did that help?
Great pork chop recipe, Ashley! I made the recipe last night and it was quite possibly the juiciest, most flavorful pork chops I've ever had. I would make one slight mod and cut down on the pepper which was bit too strong. Otherwise, it was a hit with my family!
the sauce is not bad my family liked it but i feel its lacking so im gonna see how it tastes adding smoked paprika, garlic & onion pwd, fennel and coriander or perhaps rosemary and oregano or marjoram and finally honey in the sauce to give it sweet and hot herbal taste, im gonna play around
Whoa wait a minute. A great pie crust is all that is needed not some weird coconut crust. Great pie crusts are getting harder and harder to find however they contribute just as much to a great pie as the filling does.
The food looks GREAT!! Love the show. 💜 However, I have one none food related question the lady in the back test kitchen...13:26 mins. What brand of shoes are those??? They look like Dansko shoes in a metallic gold. 🥰 asking for a friend lol
That is an OK pie server but the key thing, especially for that first piece, is that you need some flexibility. You need to find something like the Lee Valley pie server which has a tapered thickness to the steel. Anything without that is really a cake server.
In Bardstown KY these pork chops are served as a sandwich at the Kentucky Colonel 's BBQ on Derby day. Yes, bone in. So good, I will have to make these at home now.
For the pastry cream, should’ve used half coconut milk and half milk to incorporate more coconut flavor. Also a few tablespoons of coconut oil added at the end like how butter is added in pastry cream wouldn’t hurt, too
LOVE toasted coconut - bet this would taste even more fantastic with toasted coconut all the way through, or at least in the crust, or does the crust cooking process do that?

They are wonderful and the recipes are doable and delicious. If you havent, I also HIGHLY suggest Chef Johns Food Wishes.
James West Thanks. I’ll check him out
Anne Brunner Yes, and they bring that to their videos. Love the authenticity.

Go to Amazon UK to get those things!
Hi do you have your recipe for the wafers? I'm in the UK and I don't know what they're like to even attempt to make them
OXO really is your top brand in so many tests, they are doing a really good job. :)

I married into a family of very successful coconut farmers. Yet this is news to them! This will be a big, big hit here!
Can certainly tell two of you genuinely like each other - and, this pie looks devine!

Try using Clear Gel ( the cook type) instead of regular corn starch. It doesn't break down like regular corn starch does!

Hey there! Did you use kosher or table salt? I used kosher in the recipe, so cut in half if using table (smaller salt crystals.)
@@ashleymoore8599 kosher salt. Would you suggest adding sugar to balance the salt? My husband loves the chops. Love them. Thanks.
The salt is outrageous in this recipe. My family hated these. I may never recover my reputation. :O
Didn't say how much butter or if it is salted or unsalted. I'm guessing unsalted and maybe 3/4 or 1 whole stick. Anyone?
One word! Charcoal
Those chops made my mouth water. Must add that recipe to my portfolio.
Oooooo weeeee I cant wait to make my own pie!!!!
Love love love Ashley!
Tried these pork chops out. They were great! Thanks ATK/CC team. :))
And if you don't like coconut, this is a perfectly good recipe for a custard pie which could be flavored with any sort of flavored extract or syrup.
Can you cook the chops in the oven? I don’t own a grill.
Pork chops look great definitely
want to try that on my new Weber® iGrill®

You could also replace the melted butter in the crust with unrefined coconut oil for even more coconuttiness.
I'm also surprised they didn't use coconut cookies.
So yummy that..new friend here
I never had pork chops on the grill
Can those pork chops be done on an indoor grill?

Did anyone catch that pile of blood near the bone when she was turning them in the sauce????
It's not blood; it's heme.

all hail the coconut queen
why not coconut milk or cream for the custard or the whipped cream top, or won't it whip?
how much butter?
30 Rock reference...anyone else catch it?
I'm wondering (in the effort to totally coconutilize coconut cream pie) if coconut cream could be used wholly or in part to make the custard?
that was my thought too!

We can't get shredded coconut in the UK. Breaks my heart ☹
With a pie that good and 4 or so forks, who needs a pie server? It'd be gone before you could bring over the dessert plates.
i only need one fork for me, myself, and i. lol
I'm going to have a try on those chops but I'm sorry I can't stand coconut any thing .

Hello,

Wish I a piece.
Hey, Cook's Country! Could you substitute coconut milk for the milk?
@America's Test Kitchens Crumbed Graham Crackers with some Nutmeg, Cinnamon, and sugar with melted butter is how I do it.
Whipped cream??? It’s meringue all the way with toasted coconut on top.

Coconut or nut crust would work
Maybe you could use coconut flour instead of wheat flour.
Hi!
Hmmm... pork steaks are abundant here and dirt cheap. I'll bet I can do something similar to the chops but even more tender.

140 deg for pork? i thought it should be 165
