Putting the poison mushroom at the beginning is the best place they could have put it. They have to teach the mechanic at some point, so it's better there than if you were further into the game

on one hand it definitely makes sense to put the trap that looks like a helpful item in a place you'd usually get the helpful item, but at the same time I can totally see it being super confusing and upsetting

@@KitsuneYojimbo What I mean is, I don't think it's a trap at all! It's more of a warning shot to let new players know what poison mushrooms look like. There aren't really any stakes at the beginning of the first level since you won't have invested more than a few seconds by the time you find it. It's an invisible tutorial, just like how the first mushroom was designed in the first Super Mario Bros.

It's also a great tool for setting expectations! Normally you'd have to get stuck and die a lot to figure out just how difficult the game is. With the poison mushroom, it lets you know exactly what kind of game it'll be from the get-go. It honestly left me excited for the challenge!

Doki Doki Panic actually DID start as a Mario concept.
Also, Super Mario World technically has six new power ups: Cape, Balloon, Yoshi and his standard abilities, Blue Yoshi’s flight, Red Yoshi’s fire, and Yellow Yoshi’s stomp. Each Yoshi can use all of those powers as well.

    • @xenxander

0:56 To be fair, this is how virtually every other game at the time handled multiplayer. The only way to play real-time multiplayer at the time was through LAN as real-time multiplayer required more resources than what the typical home console could offer, so most older games relied on a turn-based approach instead. People were very familiar with this type of multiplayer, as it was the same kind of gameplay that the majority of home and arcade consoles at the time offered.

In the Japanese SMB2, I think the negative warp zones are even more sadistic than the poison mushrooms. The poison mushroom is something the game teaches the player about very early and it has a distinct appearance that makes it avoidable, but the negative warps punish the player for thorough level exploration, which is something that I don't think Mario games should do.

  • @tylerb.gaming762

When it comes to Mario World I feel like the reason they only added one new powerup and kept the standard mushroom fire flower and star is because Yoshi himself. He’s the main gimmick of this game and utility wise acts similar to a powerup especially when it comes to the shells so they probably didn’t need any more powerups.
The cape is also has more depth than a standard Mario powerup so there’s that too

  • @MikeQuinn71

Alternating turns was just what games were back then.

    • @Swiftbow
      @Swiftbow หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Not ALL games. The original Mario Bros (not Super) was simultaneous multiplayer. Duck Hunt (usually included on the same cartridge as Super Mario Bros.) was actually technically simultaneous multiplayer, too, actually. (The second player was able to override the computer's automatic duck flight pattern.) There were a few other games like that, too, including a lot of later release NES games.
That said, Super Mario Bros being turn-based didn't really surprise anybody. I think most people who got the game had already played it on the ubiquitous arcade consoles that were everywhere. We knew how it worked.
Seriously... they had these flat, glass-top table consoles for Super Mario Bros. at the front end of SUPERMARKETS. (More than once I played on those while my Mom went shopping.) And at many bars, usually next to or part of Pac-Man machines. I think lots of people bought the console so they could stop feeding quarters.

  • @devonm042690
    @devonm042690 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I had a thought regarding Mario 3 and its lack of a save feature. I know the Warp Whistles _kind of_ fulfill the same purpose, but does anyone else think it would have been cool (and fittingly '90s gaming) if each of Peach's letters contained a 'Secret Message' that was a password that if input on a password screen would start the player at the start of the world the player would be going into when receiving said letter? Perhaps also starting players with the 'Jewel that helps protect you' that was enclosed in said letter.

    • @Swiftbow
      @Swiftbow หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The problem there is the variability in the power-ups in your inventory. If it was just running off passwords, you'd automatically start at the set map level with an empty inventory screen.
That MIGHT have been okay in some ways... but it'd still be quite disappointing. That was often the trade-off with the warp whistles... you can skip to (nearly) the end of the game, but you miss out on the best power-ups.
Incidentally, you can get the first two warp whistles in, I think, less than 10 minutes? The third one takes a little longer because you have to clear half the desert map to get to it.

At the time of release, SMB2 didn't actually seem that disjointed and out of place to American kids because we didn't know about SMB2J, and between SMB1 and other games starring Mario like Mario Brothers, Donkey Kong, and Wrecking Crew, it just seemed like another interesting game starring Mario with a new setting and mechanics. It wasn't until more Mario games came out and a general formula was established that Mario 2 started getting a rep as the black sheep. Zelda II followed a very similar track. It was pretty well-liked back when there were only two Zelda games. The funny thing is I remember being more confused by the release of SMB3, I was expecting Nintendo to do something completely different again, rather than build upon the gameplay of SMB1.

Back when Mario 2 came out in the USA, the 2d Mario formula hadn’t been established yet. So the fact that Mario 2 was quite different to the original Super Mario Bros didn’t confuse players at all. The lost levels were ok. They certainly weren't the best Mario, but they really made me think about what I'm doing before I do stuff. I think the unfair elements are kinda fun, but I can get why others wouldn't like it. Also, the poison mushroom thing was kind of strange to me too, but I suspected it was bad because of the weird coloring. (It's brown instead of a vibrant red.)
Also, for your Mario Land 2 complaint, I think the 32 levels were kind of better than having 96 levels. I would've prefered at least 36 levels myself. I feel it would just drag on for a lot longer, and 32 levels is the same as Mario 1, and that game was plenty good with that many levels. I think the real problem with Land 2 is that it doesn't have as much content. It has, by far, my favorite level designs out of any old Mario game, but it still feels like you blow through them quickly. It doesn't help that there's no hard mode, unlike Mario 1. SML2, while my favorite, really lacks in the content department.
Otherwise, you did a great job making this video, good luck, mate!

9:22 I'm in full agreement here. I found the mega mushroom to be pretty frustrating to use especially as a pocket item where I want to use it somewhere but I end up only being able to go like a few feet forwards and not be able to do anything else with it. It was an incredibly useless item in that game. It seems to only work in locations where you specifically get one in a level. But if you have the power up with you in your pockets you just won't really have a good feasible place to use it.
I was 18 when new Super Mario Bros came out for the DS and I absolutely love the Mario games I grew up with in the 90s, but I thought that new Super Mario Bros was actually a pretty fantastic game especially with the fun multiplayer. But like you said that mega mushroom there's rarely a good time to ever use it

First off SMB (and Zelda 2!) graphics were incredible and amazing compared to what was on the NES up to those points. And of course Luigi would be second player if he was already in Mario Bros! The problem was that if one player was significantly better the other player would have to wait a long time to get their turn...hence why in All-Stars this was changed to either dying OR clearing the stage gave the other player their turn.
Forgive me if I'm going off on a tangent but there was a rule change in Candy Land for a similar reason. Originally if you got on one of the stuck spaces, you didn't escape without drawing its color (blue/red/yellow) and that would get boring to be stuck for several turns in a row. The rule now is that if you land on a stuck space, you simply lose/skip your next turn.

0:49 honestly my problem with Super Mario Bros is that too many levels are completely identical to one another. Especially when you actually beat the game and you take on the supposed harder mode where all the goombas are replaced by buzzy beetles. Because any two identical levels end up matching the later one to be identical because the later one is the harder one in difficulty.
    1 - 3 is identical to 5 - 3
    1 - 4 is identical to 6-4
    2 - 2 is identical to 7-2
    2 - 3 is identical to 7-3
    2 - 4 is identical to 5-4
I honestly find this to be completely unacceptable especially when so many other NES games were able to have all levels be different. @tzarg from what I know the Tanooki powerup in Mario 3 had the additional ability to turn into a statue which didn't end up being that useful. The penguin suit had a lot more benefits but I still think it's a bit unfair to criticize it since it's somewhat rare.

I feel like SMW’s lack of new powerups was so that they could develop the powers that they did add: Yoshi and the cape. In SMB3, I feel like they overstuffed the game with the Hammer, Frog, and the Goomba Shoe (which was only used in one level), as well as all those weird one use items on the overworld

    • @Swiftbow

Some of those power-ups in SMB3 are so hard to find that I literally haven't ever gotten some of them. Like the Hammer Suit. (And I've had the game since the same year it was released.)
What the game really needed was the ability to swap out power-ups on the map screen without losing the one you already have. Like the power-up swaps into your inventory instead.

When SMB2 came out, all my friends and I loved it. Sequels felt like they were supposed to be different. We didn’t put too much thought into it, we just accepted it. I mean, the controls were better, the graphics were better, the colors were brighter, the music was better, the levels were better, you could choose one of four players. It was a brand new adventure, and it was super fun. That’s all that mattered. ❤

To be honest, thinking about it Mario games don't have the best track record with multiplayer.
SMB1 - You take turns as Mario and Luigi which is fine to me, it was a still pretty early NES game. But I never understood why you had to wait for the other play to lose a life, to get your turn.
SMB2 (Japan) - Same as above.
    SMB2 (International) - No multiplayer.
SMB3 - They improved and you actually take turns playing levels, wish they tried real time multiplayer. Though time constraints were probably the issue.
SMW - Works same as above, but at this point they were honestly running out of excuses. The SNES could definitely handle Mario and Luigi playing at the same time.
SML1 & SML2 - No multiplayer, but I guess they are Game Boy games after all.
SM64 - We all know multiplayer was planned, but time constraints and hardware limitations killed it.
SMSS - They honestly could've made this work if they tried, but I guess they didn't.
SM64 DS - This 100% worked, you can see footage from beta builds with 4 player real time multiplayer in the story mode. But they relegated it to some boring battle mode in the final game.
NSMB DS - Same as above, beta builds showed Mario and Luigi together playing levels from the main game. Yet again, this got relegated to a barebones battle mode.
    SMG1 & SMG2 - Could've done it no problem, but again just didn't try.
NSMB Wii - First game to get it right and set the precedent for all future games. One of the many reasons this is the best NSMB game.
NSMB2 - Only further affirms that DS could do it. A bit clunky in some more complex levels but definitely works well.
All games after that pretty much copy what NSMB Wii laid out. Odyssey doesn't have multiplayer, but I guess the 3D game being 1 player has become tradition at this point.

One complaint about NSMB I have is how powerup variety is pretty much non-existant. Sure, you get a big/small mushroom, or the blue shell, but it's so rare you barely get to play with them! Also with the stiff controls of the game I'd be really glad if they put in some mobility powerup, like for example the raccoon leaf

I wouldn’t say the Mega Mario power up making the level easier is a bad thing. The levels are hard. Having a power up that makes levels easier isn’t a bad thing.
I instead have this complaint about the Mega Mario power up: there are levels that turn the Mega Mario power up into a power down. These types of levels are:
    1) levels that have little or no floor (the sky based levels are a prime example of this)
    2) levels that contain a lot of instant death areas (bottomless pits, lava and/or poison)
    3) levels that have roofs, especially low celling levels
    4) levels that have very few areas for Mario to transform into Mega Mario
    5) levels that have breakable ground for most or all the entire level (there is one kind of breakable block that only Mega Mario can break)

I think it was cost point. As I recall, Zelda carts cost more to produce because of the battery, which I think also translated to a higher price for them in stores compared to other games. This was a big deal for some people, and meant that fewer games would be sold.
If you didn't know how it worked, cartridges didn't have hard drives or any kind of permanent storage device. They work entirely with RAM. (RAM clears all data when power is lost.) So the way they actually saved your progress was by a little round lithium battery that never allowed the RAM to shut off completely, thus saving your game. (This is also how computers maintain the system date in their motherboards when they're unplugged. Even uses the same kind of battery.)
The insane thing is that some of those old cartridges STILL haven't drained their batteries. (The batteries are replaceable, but it's not easy to open the cartridges to do it. Also, if you do, all your save files will vanish.)

    Just sharing my own thoughts...
SMB1: I don't think I was disappointed by the two player mode. Sure, being able to play at the same time would have been cool, but I still liked it well enough. No, the REAL flaw with two player mode is that it only switched if you died. It was entirely possible for somebody to beat the entire game without even giving player 2 a chance. Ouch.
Lost Levels: Lot of fun ideas, but terribly punishing. How about those warp zones that take you backwards? how about how you can't access the extra worlds if you warp, but you never knew when it would surprise you with a warpzone down a random pipe?
SMB2: So, did you know that before it became Doki Doki Panic, it was originally a Mario game? That's right, it started out as a future mario game before being adapted
to a new property, before being changed into a mario game. It's why there were already Mario items like the pow block even before the conversion. I don't think people at the time were confused it was different. there was no pattern yet. Just look at Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., and DK 3. Nintendo was already known for reinventing the wheel with every game. A few more returnung features could have been fun though. I'd still love
to see some features from smb2 return mixed in with traditional mario elements.
SMB3: Saving would have been nice, but did you know SMB3 is the only 2d mario game without midlevel check points? The levels were shorter, on average, but I can still think of a few that could have really used it.
SML: yeah this game was super primitive. I do love how weird it is though.
SMW: I don't know if it's even true, but somehow the levels felt a little more samey than smb3. Maybe another new powerup would have helped.
SML2: s few more levels could have been nice. the fact that you could go to the area in any order was a fascinating experiment.
SM64: The camera was rough, yeah, but I still find it funny you can just get mario stuck clipping into random spots in the floor if you hit some weird collision.
Sunshine was more linear than it needed to be. Making the water pump strapped to your back shout tutorials at you was my biggest pet peeve.

I mean, I wasn't disappointed by the multiplayer in SMB. I just accepted that that's the way it was, partially because I didn't have many years of seeing what else was possible under my belt, and partially because, well, I didn't play it with others much to begin with.
That's a good question. I wonder if the original Japanese manual would have helped. I only encountered it in the SNES version, where they did more to differentiate Poison Mushrooms visually from the Super Mushroom and 1-up Mushroom.
Thankfully, Super Mario All-Stars addressed the saving issue, as well.

So the jarring nature of a poison mushroom would be countered by reading the manual.

    • @ryanshark6

Okay, so this video is actually really good!
    WARNING LONG ASS COMMENT
What stood out for me the most is how good your personality is idk I can just listen to you speak for a long time you got a really enjoyable voice candace and pronunciation even with the mic you use.
    Now for the actual feedback:
(Remember I give of feedback of what I think, take it with a grain of salt and decide yourself I will probably say what I see working but it doesn’t work for everyone)
Starting off with what most consider the most important part TTH (Title, Thumbnail, Hook) If you don’t make people care they won’t care. Simple
    Remember TTH work together.
TT - attracts the viewer (shouldn't have the same thing)
H- Restatates the TT so the viewer knows they will get what they wanted (and maybe more)
    Title:
I See that YOU Don’t use a LOT of Capitalisation when creating Titles BUT it’s GREAT.
The WORST Thing in EVERY MARIO Game > The worst thing about every Mario game
Also consider how people read from left to right duh and the more they read they get less and less engaged. That’s why the most important words have to be first.
Let’s do it that way the viewer reads max 5 words while quickly looking at the side bar, which video they will choose:
The worst thing about every… OR Mario’s The worst part game…
The first one because Mario is present in the Thumbnail and the second one sucks, trick question. I just did that to reinforce the idea of TT(H) working together.
The title I would choose would be:
The WORST THING in EVERY MARIO Game
Remember you can always change titles, I know you did that with the Subnautica video.
    Thumbnails:
You can test up to 3 thumbnails. I recommend doing that, it will choose the one that generates the most watch time.
Here you have a consistent theme which is amazing but let’s say the same viewer from before stumbles on your video again but now he forgot his glasses and can’t read.
Looking only at the thumbnail he might assume the video is about:
-The worst designed thing in a mario game
    -Just mario the lost levels
-Mario being a better design than the poison mushroom
    Etc.
Most good thumbnails should have at most only 3 main elements
Your has two (mario+schroom and text with an arrow)
I would recommend including more than one game other than that I know you like simple thumbnails (I will post some on discord today)
    Hook:
Typically the first 30 seconds to 1 minute of the video.
I love what you did with saying the fuck word to Mario but it just didn’t pop as much as it could.
Now I will explain one of the most important rules of storytelling and video creation
SHOW DON’T TELL (hell yeah, *cheer*)
It is really simple to understand but hard to master like it can be even used in speech.
In the mario scene you could have added text and made mario react in some way.
The best option is the one that requires the most effort: Find irl Mario, point middle fingers at him, say the line, add the text all for 1 second of content.
Other than not using “show don't tell” the hook was perfect.
    The rest of video:
I will spare you the reading and just say show don’t tell
I you are saying something show it
You have a great script but you aren’t writing you are making a video so show things not just gameplay.
Like when you say multiplayer would be cool: show that
The lost levels are unfair: show that
Also when transitioning to the next game maybe have the box art/name shown.
    The ending:
Here you encourage the viewer to watch more of you.
The viewer as soon as he notices the end they click off.
Your ending is almost 10% of the video so that is bad.
You don’t have to go on for so long
You kinda saved the ending with the due christmas joke but try to never take away from the video
Also for the future one big upload that takes a week will almost always perform better that daily uploads for a week
I can say more but I know this is your first time making this type of video and I don’t want to go too far and say you should remove the endscreen for maximum retention and to use the channel rabbithole (don’t worry about it, for now)
I know you worked hard on this video and you should be proud because it is a really good video.
Thank you for the daily uploads this month. They were amazing. Hope they were fun to make as well.
Now go on and enjoy Christmas. Have a day when you don’t check yt studio or comments and just relax with your family. You have to eat some good food, no excuses.
Hope this feedback was helpful and didn’t feel like a chore to read though.
If you want I can probably explain most things more and add more feedback.
Thank you again for the uploads!
Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates and happy New Year as well. As always
    Have an amazing holiday/night

Thanks for the feedback, you clearly know a lot about this kind of stuff, and I really appreciate you taking the time to leave such a detailed comment. While It likely would be good to implement everything you talked about, right now I want to focus more on finding a style of this type of video that works for me, and that I can use to bring something new to the genre. I don't intend on making money from TH-cam for the next few years so I want to focus more of building an audience that likes specifically my content, rather than one who watches me as "another channel with this type of content". That being said I will absolutely apply most of your feedback on the next video I make, but I'll probably keep stuff like my end card and longer outro for now. Because with the amount of viewers I currently have they'll likely only barely effect my retention, and I like having small things that make the video feel like my own. I'm very excited to try something like this again and I already have ideas for future videos that are a bit more unique and exciting than this, and hopefully over time I get better at writing, editing, and voicing these kinds of videos.
Also sorry if it seems like I don't use your advice much, I promise I do actually care about building my channel and your tips have really helped with that, I'm just bad at writing responses.

(only mentioning channels that are similar to you in some way so I don’t type a whole Bible length comment)
@AstroidmaniaVideos - he makes pokemon videos BUT he is a master at storytelling and editing, only he makes videos like that
@CeaveGaming - Nintendo mostly mario, to be honest I don’t know what here is unique but I just never managed to find videos like these
@Danidev - highly successful game developer that has an unique type of humor he sadly disappeared
@Drengodr - gaming challenges, he has a unique personality that make his videos unique
@raysfire - mario, a lot of humor chat engagement and modding
That is all because I’m not mentioning channels that are unique because of:
      -animation (e.g. @GetMadz)
      -INSANE challenges (@Smallant)
      -and probably more
Hope the path to finding unique content goes well for you!
      As always
      Have some bread 🍞

SMB2-U Being different isn’t a bad thing and I doubt it was confusing for players at the time. The game is just different, just like how zelda 2 is different from zelda 1 and Castlevania 2 is different from Castlevania 1.

Mario 1’s last level isn’t very good, Lost Levels in general isn’t very fun, some of Mario 2’s level design could’ve been better, Mario 3’s difficulty is all over the place, Land is too short, Yoshi’s arms are orange in Mario World, Mario 64’s camera isn’t good, and some of the required Shine Sprites are bullshit. The Chucksters are usually funny distractions, but have a whole mission based on them maybe wasn’t a good idea

You didn’t just say *all* NSMB games are aesthetically boring did you? I’ve only played NSMBW and NSMBU but I wouldn’t say they look bad at all. I’d argue the same thing as I would for the Paper Mario games; that it’s just an art direction people don’t like. Again, would not say either of those series look bad

    • @ryanshark6
      @ryanshark6  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I agree they all look pretty good, I was more saying that they all look too similar making them boring. Also do people really not like how the Paper Mario games look? I always loved how everything is contextualized as paper, and specifically the modern ones with the added depth of all the cardboard.

@@ryanshark6 ahh, I see what you mean now, thank you for clarifying lol
Regarding the Paper Mario games I should have mentioned I was mostly talking about Super Paper Mario, so that's my bad, but in general I've heard negative comments here and there that it looks too simple. As for Super Paper Mario - which is the only one I've played, and I have played a LOT - it's usually something along the lines of "There's too many basic geometric shapes for characters and landscapes." I think it adds flavor to the game and makes it unique and I saw a video about it that I think does a great job explaining the whole thing, if you're interested:
