I love the way Kevin Spacey said "Krrrryptonite" at the beginning of this scene. Me and my sister like to say it a LOT even until now after we are all grown-up and have kids.
I watched this movie in cinemas when I was 8 years old. it was late and I got sleepy, but the way luthor said this line woke me up. 16 years later and it's the only thing I remember from the movie :p
0:52 "I'm still Superman!". I didn't get that when I first watched it but now it really adds to it. This movie is about Superman returning and encountering a whole new world that he missed the change to... The perfect conclusion to the original Reeves movies and the start to something beatiful we never got to see and it's a shame. This was like if we got Batman Begins but The Dark Knight and TDK Rises was cancelled for a whole new reboot of Batman in the DCEU. And that line right there, captures the entire point of the movie perfectly. Superman was away for long and it seems like the world doesn't need him anymore but he never loses it. Even when he is beaten and nearly dies, he still doesn't give up. He still IS Superman. Superman is not meant to be something big or better than people. It's this entire point that Superman is still and very much human while remaining to be a symbol of hope. A point that the new DCEU movies tryed to show but failed to do so. At least Routh smiles throught the movie. He captures the feeling of a Superman in a new world, perfectly.
I would agree but Batman Begins was successful because it never got confused with what it wants to be. Superman Returns however is confused about whether it wants to be a sequel to Richard Donner's Superman, a remake, or a sequel, and constantly alternates between all three options. While Brandon Routh did a spot on imitation of Christopher Reeve no else around him matched the feel of those original films and were doing their own thing.
Imagine if Spider-Man facing the sinister six in live action having some of his powers nullified through Ethanol Chloride he would receive beating from the other villains only he would be unmasked he would say as he’s getting dragged by a villain yelling to Dr. Octopus. “I AM STILL SPIDER-MAN!”
This is like, the only time where I wasn't rooting for the bad guy in a super hero film. Seeing such a bright iconic character like Superman get his ass kicked and beaten down into a puddle of mud was actually kind of hard to watch.
Jeahav Valentin Well, while I may voice Sonic I'm not physically Sonic, but what I can tell you is that Sonic is getting exactly what you just said in a few years. I hope it gets cancelled.
Nolan Fultz Well sonic I have a young brother who adores you and loves you a lot, I'm telling you you're one of his biggest fans and it's his dream and his whole life to see you as one of his favorite heroes being done justice in live action. Because unlike bryan hack singer Zack Snyder did my boy justice in Man Of Steel which is clearly a way better Superman Movie than this boring piece of crap. So basically Superman is my #1 favorite Superhero character of all times to date and what Superman is to me what you're to my younger brother sonic. You're his favorite hero his favorite icon and like I said he adores you very much as I adore my boy Superman.
Jeahav Valentin I'm not Sonic, I voice Sonic. Why would he want a live action Sonic? That's a terrible idea. Just make it 2D or 3D animated, like the opening to Unleashed or the OVA.
This scene was a great callback to an earlier line Lex said something about his time in jail. “Even the biggest guy can be brought down with a little brainpower and sharp bit of metal in your pocket”
This scene was heartbreaking to watch in the cinema as a kid 😭 But Kevin Spacey is by far the best Lex Luther there will ever be. I'm still gutted they gave the role to Jesse Eisenburg of all people...
+Dom Sweeney "I think Jesse Eisenberg is a remarkable actor. He's just going to fucking own it. I think it's a great idea and I wish him the best with it." Kevin Spacey
I know it’s late, but at least, get Batman involved since he may be investigating Luthor ever since he got released from prison. Plus, he is Superman’s both greatest ally and his friend
ButterOnCorn I'm not saying that this characterization of Luthor being a "real estate mogul" is necessarily the thing I miss. But can you imagine the gravitas Kevin Spacey would of brought to the role? Especially if you watch House of Cards. Its not that Eisenberg is a bad actor. Its just certain actors can bring something to a role, even if a movie is as choppy in editing as it was in BvS.
+William McCormick The only reason Lex Luthor said "now fly" is because, he stabbed a piece of kryptonite in Superman's back and whenever Superman is around kryptonite, his powers (flying, power blowing, and laser eyes) all disappear which is why Lex Luthor was able to kick Superman easily with Superman getting injured. I'm sure if there was no kryptonite around, Lex Luthor would have broke his leg from kicking Superman.
This is where I wish Batman showed up and broke all their bones as he screamed, "You don't get it son. This isn't a mudwhole. It's an operating table. And I'm the surgeon!" And then sees how Superman is doing.
+Demetre Woods I just heard a new Bruce Lee story from a stuntman or someone like that. He was walking with Bruce and two guys talked un nicey to Bruce. He picked both of them up with one hand each, "Like Popeye" said his friend. Now, Lee was just around 130 pounds, so that's pretty Batmanish, even if each of those guys was just 150 pounds each. That would be impressive if they were 100 pounds each! TW, one he was walking with his sister in law, and four panks said unkind words. Bruce said to his sister in law, be right back. When she turned around a couple of seconds later, the four were flat on the ground. "What did you do?" "Oh, I just kicked them." Now that's Bruce Wayne! oops, Lee.
It will be cool to see him get beat up by Doomsday or Darkseid but this is just horrible. It's not nice to watch. But it was amazingly done for those reasons.
I LOVE THIS SCENE! ALONG WITH THE MOVIE, IT MAKES ME CRY EVERYTIME! JUST SEEING SUPERMAN GETTING TORTURED MAKES ME SAD. PEOPLE HATE ON THIS MOVIE WAY TOO MUCH! :'(
I never understand the criticisms of this film. I think it's potentially the BEST superhero film ever! The scene where Lex schools Lois on his plan is phenomenal. The airplane crash/baseball field scene is unforgettably "wow" action-wise....The scene where Supes flies Lois again and explains how he "heard everything" is both epic and heartbreaking...and this beat the life out of superman scene is unbeatably powerful
Yeah but there are a ton of crappy parts to this film too. Like the casting of Lois Lane. Superman being a deadbeat father. Jason. Richard. Superman literally never throwing one punch in the entire film.
I nearly cried during this scene. To see Earth's greatest hero reduced to helpless crawling heap as those three guys beat the crap out of him was just heartbreaking. Although some Batman fans often point to this scene to say that "Superman sucks! If Batman was in that situation, he would have beaten the crap out of those guys!" Well duh, Batman doesn't have Supes weakness to Kryptonite. That's like saying Bats sucks because in TDK, Superman could have easily flown and rescued Harvey & Rachel
If they’d had fast-paced scary music playing the scene would have been just brutal, but the sad music makes it something else entirely. The fact that a lot of people have openly admitted to crying during this scene really sells how effective it is, even if the movie it’s from is rather unmemorable.
As a Batman fan, yes if Batman were in that situation, he could've easily laid out Lex Luthor and his goons because he's a human being with no superpowers and he doesn't have Supes weakness to kryptonite (which puts him one step ahead of Superman). And like you said in reference to TDK about Batman failing to rescue both Harvey and Rachel. Yes, if Superman were in the situation, he could've easily flown in on time to save both of them due to his quickness and imperviousness (which puts him one step ahead of Batman). So, you see both Bats and Supes are unique in their own way. What both Bats and Supes have in common is their willingness to sacrifice themselves for the good of mankind. Like for instance, in TDKR Batman took that nuclear bomb out of Gotham using the Batwing and in SR, Superman used layers of the earth to help lift the kryptonite landmass out of the earth and send it into outer space.
I dont care what people think, this was a good Superman movie. I love Man of Steel and Smallville and their versions of a different Superman. But Bryan Singer did something that was rare and unique with this film I think Brandon Routh was just as good as Chris Reeve, Tom Welling and now Henry Cavill. Not to mention, Jesse Eisenburg I dont think will be a believable Lex Luther. Its hard to follow what Gene Hackman, Micheal Rosenbaum and Kevin Spacey did for the character...
***** Yeah it did Brian, Superman 4 was never finished and Singer wanted people to forget about Superman 3 and 4. Superman 3 I still like, especially the fight between Good Clark and Bad Superman. But people forget that Superman Returns was a success. I even boycotted the movie before I saw it, then I changed my mind and gave it a shot, and I liked it. I think Brandon Routh was a good choice to play Superman, and I think if Chris Reeve was alive at the time to see it, he would have liked it also.
i think this movie is a bit long and dull but it has its moments like this scene and that scene where he falls from space. Also i like it how it feels like a classic superman film
***** I can agree with both of you, I would rather have seen more action in the movie, than Lois Lane, Kate Bosworth in my opinion is what ruined the movie for me. She is the worst Lois Lane ever, not to mention her character I dont think would have been so cold to Superman.
Yes it may be embarrassing to see superman get his ass kicked but he couldn't fight back against them because kryptonite was all over the island so you need to understand that and yes I love superman as well
+Mike T It can be literally ripped from the comic book page *cough* Deadpool... and people will still find something to bitch about. Whether its ONE line delivery or a missing tiny piece of fabric on the costume. Hell there are some people who already think the new spiderman actor sucks just because of how he delivered the line "Hey, everyone." Or how the screenwriter sucks since he should of made spiderman say "Whats up, everybody". The amount of bitching with these comic book movies is unanimously amazing. Almost no one is satisfied.
It was definitely far more intense. I really enjoyed Man of Steel, but in Superman Returns he isn't just bruised or beaten. He's rendered powerless, kicked while he's down and STABBED WITH A KRYPTONITE SHIV. That's just plain BRUTAL.
Now for those people who think superman does not fight he tried fighting back against lex luthor by grabing his foot but his men were there with him and he was also surrounded by kryptonite and after he grabed his foot his men started to beat the shit outta superman while he was powerless to fight back
Wolverine would torn off that guys fingers before cutting off his arm then brutally killing everyone last one of those guys that's why I like wolverine better because he doesn't care at all if there human pissing Logan off is the last thing you ever do
Exactly! The scene with Hackmen's Luthor and Reeves Superman is done perfectly the tone, the music the performances.....the way Reeves looks at the kryptonite neclace and holds out his hand and the way in which Hackmen approaches him with that grin "Mind over muscle" is perfect. This is why that movie is still a classic today and still will be after the what looks to be "in your face" action version of superman in "Man of steel".
Based on what I've seen of Eisenberg's performance in the latest trailer, he is still the annoying narcasistic piece of shit geek that he always plays.
I wish Brandon Routh was cast as Superman in the new Man of Steel coming out soon!! I love Brandon! He is such an awesome actor, and honestly he has the perfect characteristics for Superman. Even as Clark Kent, he gives just the right amount of awkwardness, clumsiness, shyness, and humor that Clark is. I will always think Routh is the perfect actor to play in any Superman movie. He is just so amazing and perfect! :)

I don't really like superman returns, Brandon routh didn't really suit me, but I absolutely loved Kevin Spacey's performance! He nailed it! Am I right guys?
This is the story for Superman we all wanted but never got. To humanize him was unthought of. Yet that humanization is the quintessential drive of his entire rise to ultimate power. Lex Luthor is necessary for Superman.
As a kid I always wondered how he easily got beat up by those guys and now I realize it’s because the island he was on is completely made of kryptonite the one thing that weakens him
My cousin and I saw this movie at a dollar theater with my aunt and grandmother. I cried when it looked like he was going to die. It was like watching Santa get beaten by thugs.
This movie was meant to be more of a dramatic story of Superman re-establishing himself on a world he left for five years and the inner struggle he endured to find a place he felt he was needed. Although I don't think they found the appropriate actor to play Superman, the story was incredible.
except for the fact that his plan was doomed to failure and was completely stupid because he was about to comment genocide of half the us wiping his money making plan, he did not have weapons of a large scale enough to take down any army and he had no way to make food because it takes years to crate a habitable landform
What should have happened is after he grabbed Lex's foot he pushes him backwards onto the ground. When Superman tries to get up, he is kicked in the side again by a henchman, but when Clark tries again and rises quickly enough so that when the henchmen goes to hit him again, Superman punches him in the face and takes him out of the fight. The second henchman will try to attack him and Superman will grab him by the shirt and throw him into the rocks knocking him out of the fight. Clark is quickly punched down to the ground by the third henchman, who then grabs him in a headlock and Luthor proceeds to beat him. Clark manages to get in a kick which knocks Luthor back again, and allows Superman to back up towards the edge of the cliff. As they are about to fall off, Superman goes to the right and slams the henchman into the rocks, weakening him and allowing Superman to shove him off, knocking him out. Then, when Superman is distracted from doing this, Luthor stabs him with the Kryptonite and the scene plays out where he pushes him off the cliff. This would be better because while the outcome of the scene is the same, and we still see Superman defeated, it isn't as humiliating because he at least beats the nameless henchmen.
Yeah, this scene could have been the opportunity to see Superman actually fight in this movie. Maybe he even still has his powers but they are weakened to be relative human level.
by far the best lex luthor. While Eisenberg has a playful madness in him, this luthor is just so menacing and cruel. You believe his hatred for superman, while Luthor in man in steel is almost like a bully from high school.
+SkudKapp'd Productions Kryptonite is like poison to Superman - prolonged exposure to a small amount would kill him - and he's literally on an island made of it. The fact that he's not dead from the beating or the fall shows how strong he really is, imo.
In an early script, Lex revealed to a weakened Superman that he had one of his henchmen send false signals to set Superman up into leaving Earth for Krypton. Lex must have whispered it to him as he's stabbing Superman. Probably realizing that he left Earth, Lois, and (unknowingly) his own son, for nothing was the worst torture than what Lex gave him. It may contribute Superman's reaffirmation to never leave Earth again, and watch over his son.
0:10 Kryptonite! 0:17 You're asking yourself 'How?' 0:20 Didn't you dad ever teach you... 0:22 ...to LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP?! 0:44 You took away 5 years of my life. 0:46 I'm just RETURNING THE FAVOR! 0:52 I'm still Superman! 2:29 AHHHHHHH!!!! 2:39 Now fly. 3:42 So long, Superman.
Entities with powers should also know how to fight (like Batman, he doesn't have powers, but he's incredibly smart and is an expert at fighting), because without their powers, they're nothing or useless.
In this version the Kryptonite prevents him from moving very well. It’s like if you had a fire set within your insides, or if your bones were made of metal, pulling you down. That’s what it’s like for Superman to be around Kryptonite. That’s why in Superman: the Movie, Superman has difficulties staying at the surface of the pool much less moving. Although some versions of Kryptonite just takes away his powers and doesn’t make him unable to move very well.
You do realize that would t have helped much right? Not only does kryptonite drain Superman from his powers, but it does weaken him. It’s not like blue kryptonite where it’ll just have him lose his powers and has him live like a normal human.
Kevin Spacey was a far more better Lex Luthor than Jesse Eisenberg in my opinion. The lady actually felt sorry for superman as Lex Luthor and his goons was beating and torturing him like a dog
The look on that woman’s face shows everything that she did not want to see him suffer or get beaten to death by those crooks. She did save his life by throwing those kryptonite shards away.
This was extremely hard to watch when I was little watching Superman getting beaten like that when he always just tried to do the right thing and would give his life to save others and yet he still gets all the shit
WoodstockProd You mean this scene that served no purpose because Clark outed himself as superman a few years later ? The scene where he could easily save his dad but didn't ? The scene where jonathan did every possible thing to get killed ? I refer to you "Everything Wrong With Man Of Steel" where they summarize with great humor why this scene failed on so many points.
thibaldus3 those guys nitpick the hell out of EVERYTHING, even movies they claim to like, they're nothing credible. and how the hell did he out himself? he's maintaining a separate identity
They nitpick the hell out of everything. Doesn't mean they don't have a point. I'm sorry I just think the treatment of Pa Kent was done terribly. Hence all those "Pa Kent is a Dick" memes. While I see where they were going when they made the movie, the only thing his actions managed to do were: 1) instilling a warped sense of morality on his son ("What sould I do let them die ? Maybe") 2) making him doubt himself so that he might never use his powers in public to help people. 3) Let him feel guilt for years and years for letting his father die. (Also the scene with the dog was beyond predictable and corny. The guy behind at the theater couldn't even supress a chuckle at this moment)
@@TheProtagonist2020 You think that's hard to watch just think what will happen if he faces Doomsday and ends up getting stabbed in the chest right where his emblem is a Doomsday's bones extends deep into his flesh.
I remember watching this at the cinema and some little girl behind me got so upset she started crying and screaming and shouted "leave him alone" I got a bit upset myself but what made me angry the most is when Lex mocks Superman
When I saw this scene in theatres, I was around 8 years old at the time and I remember crying in the theatres, because Superman was a character I looked up to as a child and I was obsessed with him. P.S. This is still a much better movie than Zack Snyder's garbage.
I don't know how you can compare two totally different movies This was following Christopher reeves superman franchise, MOS is a reboot of superman. Both were good to me but this one was so underrated.
@grayspeak They wanted to, they even had a planned script with Brainiac. Starring the same cast and directed by Singer again, but WB stopped production when the movie only made 450 million instead of 500.
bimapringgo how could he have know the entire island was made if kryptonite, i mean he's never dealt with that much before and the black rocks almost completely cover the green crystal. You get what I'm say? Of course he wouldn't have known. Because how could he have known to look over an entire island for kryptonite in the first place?
They did such a great showing you what makes Superman, a Superman … take his powers away and he’s just like everyone else but what separates him is his undying belief that humans can be good
I kind of want this Lex Luthor vs Henry Cavill's Superman. I mean look at this flourish! How great would this be against a Superman that was actually defiant and trying to fight back?
The real problem with this part of the film was how, after only 10 seconds of sunlight recharging, he simply flies down under this island that weakened him to that extent in the first place, and somehow lifts it up out of the atmosphere while under even more exposure than when he landed. THAT's the problem with this, not that he was tossed around by some thugs while weakened.
This scene made me tear up on rewatch. It just makes me think of Jesus being beaten for no reason. It hurts because they're trying to kill a man that just wants to help and do good. The music makes it emotional and it's just a sad scene. This is coming from the same guy that would reenact this scene in my wet sandbox with two Woody dolls.
There are many movies that does references to the old movies doesn't mean they're sequels. Planet of the Apes 2001 for example. Rise of the Planet of the Apes. And Superman Returns.
I used to think that 'Man of Steel' was the superior Superman film over this for the longest time. But, I soon remembered seeing 'Superman Returns' in IMAX at 8 years old. The feeling was magical. I grew up watching Christopher Reeves (The Superman) and everything from the opening credits, the John Williams theme and even Routh's spot on impersonation of Reeves made feel excited and giddy. MOS and B v S are just action-packed, CGI, popcorn movies. Not that that's a problem but, it kind of is.
CinematicsFanatic You know I'm right and you have no credibility at all. Man Of Steel is clearly way better and a lot superior to this turd and you know what I'm not worried about your putrid idiotic opinion because you can like this turd as much as you want over the goldmine masterpiece that's Man Of Steel but guess what pal you're never ever getting this version of superman ever again because Man Of Steel is The Superman Movie we're getting from now on balls to the walls super action packed and not any of that sissy crap we've gotten from this refuse whether if you like it or not so deal with it and don't even bother watching Batman V Superman Dawn Of Justice once it hits theaters and just stick with this turd and the watered down cheesy donner movies. But I can't be mad at you anymore because that's like me getting angry at a mentally deficient retarded person who can't grasp and process certain things in life like a normal thinking human being can do, so therefore I realize that Man Of Steel is not the Superman Movie for you because it's way way way way way too complex for your ADD addled brain to fully grasp and process how awesome and great Man Of Steel truly is but I do understand that Man Of Steel is too extreme for your short attention span and limited intelligence especially with the huge intense action scenes with Superman and Zod going toe to toe with each other gave you seizures at the theater. So obviously Batman V Superman Dawn Of Justice is not going to be the Superhero Movie for you since they're going to really really amp up the action on that one so my advice to you is to keep your punk ass at home and jerk your dick off to the donner movies and including this piece of turd while us real men watch Batman V Superman Dawn Of Justice when it hits theaters March 25th 2016
In this scene, to me, Lex Luthor represents human nature in its nakedest form. His fear and jealousy drives him to destroy someone who is purer than he’ll ever be, under the guise of helping humanity. Bullshit. You’re helping yourself. That’s the thanks Superman gets for all he’s done. However, Superman is an idiot in this scene. Luther tells him to “look before he leaps,” and he’s right. How many times have we seen Luthor cut Superman’s balls off because the big guy is too damn easy on him? It could be argued that the real savior of the world was Lois. What if she never got that intuition to come back? Superman would have died and Luthor would have gotten his way. For someone with his powers, that’s absolutely laughable. A hero can’t afford to be that naive.
It wasn’t Superman’s fault he fell into a trap. He didn’t know until Luthor punched him and he saw his fingers bleeding. Luthor is alway prepared like Batman is. Batman and Luthor are the only two intelligent people in the DC universe not to mention Batman is Lex’s heroic counterpart.
@@srikanthramprasad565 all the more reason not to take him lightly. And it IS his fault for getting into that trap. Storytelling aside, instead of standing there like a moron and absorbing all that kryptonite, Superman could have zipped in at super speed, snatched lex and his goons, dumped them in a max security prison, and been done with it. That’s the way to do it if Supes wanted to exploit his abilities to the utmost. But of course, that’s not his style, right? He’d rather be all wishy washy and sit on the fence for awhile. Anyone who’s dealt with narcissists will tell you, there is no reaching them. There was nothing to be accomplished to stand there and reason with LEX, FUCKING, LUTHOR. If it wasn’t for pure blind fate, he would have been fucked. Luthor couldn’t have asked for a better situation. They took a god and humbled him like a stray dog in the street, and it was completely avoidable
He's literally on an island made of krytonite. Just a shard of it can bring him to his knees after a while. His whole body must be crippled with pain. I'm surprised he was able to even stand when he first got there.
I loved Man of Steel but Jesse Eisenberg as Lex still feels like an April Fools joke. Shame Kevin Spacey probably won't be in any other Superman movies other than this turd.
I don't know which is worse Man of Steel or this. Both had different flaws. Man of Steel was a bombastic structural mess with highly questionable character choices (not the snapping neck part I mean) Superman Returns was more like the traditional Superman we all know but nothing happens in the film at all. Plus Kate Bosworth I found to be incredibly unlikeable.
***** He's good for that role, but this is Luthor as an adult and old man. Eisenberg really is not that mature and grown up yet to really look and sound like Luthor. I mean, from watching great actors like Michael Rosenbaum I know probably spelled it wrong lol. Gene H. and Kevin S. it's just hard to take him seriously and see him seriously as Luthor..

Sonic you need your own live action movie that should be super action packed in the veins of Man Of Steel and Transformers
Nolan Fultz My young brother really respects you a lot sonic
Jeahav Valentin I'm not Sonic, I voice Sonic. Why would he want a live action Sonic? That's a terrible idea. Just make it 2D or 3D animated, like the opening to Unleashed or the OVA.
This scene was a great callback to an earlier line Lex said something about his time in jail.
“Even the biggest guy can be brought down with a little brainpower and sharp bit of metal in your pocket”
This scene was heartbreaking to watch in the cinema as a kid 😭
But Kevin Spacey is by far the best Lex Luther there will ever be. I'm still gutted they gave the role to Jesse Eisenburg of all people...

@@TheSuperMarioSonicFan How,... krytonites will also weaken her.
YES
I know it’s late, but at least, get Batman involved since he may be investigating Luthor ever since he got released from prison. Plus, he is Superman’s both greatest ally and his friend

We really could have had used Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor again instead of Jessie Eisenberg

+titanfighter12 yep! that is totally mutual.
+titanfighter12 As did I Eisenberg was fucking awful its a shame this film had a great Lex Luthor but the film and plot were shit
+Casual Philosopher Eisenberg was great. No more real estate mumbo jumbo...just a billionaire mad scientist.
Im a die hard superman fan, and I love em' to death. This was hard to watch, when I was 6 I was in the theatre crying. I almost cried just now.
Say whatever you shall about this film, but that "Now fly" line is pimp.
@Luc Germain Mostly it's the kryptonite that makes Superman weak which is why Superman was just like a normal person here.
@Luc Germain Okay.
“Now fly” is a really powerful line and the scene handles it really well
And the kiriiiiptonite.
Kevin Spacey was the best Lex Luthor!

LOL I know he's weak from the kryptonite but damn! He still weighs 220+ my man threw him like he was 90 pounds!
If you're strong enough, 220 pounds would feel like 90 pounds. Just ask Batman, the guy can lift bad guys by the throat one-handed. lol
Lol I wanted to argue, but couldn't even do it once you evoked Batman.

"What did you do?" "Oh, I just kicked them." Now that's Bruce Wayne! oops, Lee.

Watching Superman getting kicked around and beat up all while screaming "I'm superman!" like a lunatic is pretty depressing....
It is! That is so sad.
It will be cool to see him get beat up by Doomsday or Darkseid but this is just horrible. It's not nice to watch. But it was amazingly done for those reasons.
Yep
When did he scream "I'm Superman"? What film did you watch?
@@godphoenix66x 0:52 he says ''i'm still superman!''
I LOVE THIS SCENE! ALONG WITH THE MOVIE, IT MAKES ME CRY EVERYTIME! JUST SEEING SUPERMAN GETTING TORTURED MAKES ME SAD. PEOPLE HATE ON THIS MOVIE WAY TOO MUCH! :'(
With good reason.
Better then The Dark Knight no.
@@RobertK1993 The critics(And fans) say otherwise.
Yeah and then everything else is very meh
I nearly cried during this scene. To see Earth's greatest hero reduced to helpless crawling heap as those three guys beat the crap out of him was just heartbreaking.
Although some Batman fans often point to this scene to say that "Superman sucks! If Batman was in that situation, he would have beaten the crap out of those guys!"
Well duh, Batman doesn't have Supes weakness to Kryptonite. That's like saying Bats sucks because in TDK, Superman could have easily flown and rescued Harvey & Rachel
No one has Superman's weakness which is Lex Luthor's downfall not to mention Kryptonite is also deadly to humans as well.
If wolverine were in that situation oh my god those guys would pieces in seconds
If they’d had fast-paced scary music playing the scene would have been just brutal, but the sad music makes it something else entirely. The fact that a lot of people have openly admitted to crying during this scene really sells how effective it is, even if the movie it’s from is rather unmemorable.
2:45
Since when did Kumar join Lex Luthor and his gang?
*****
Yeah it did Brian, Superman 4 was never finished and Singer wanted people to forget about Superman 3 and 4.
***** that scene was powerful man!!!
*****
I can agree with both of you, I would rather have seen more action in the movie, than Lois Lane, Kate Bosworth in my opinion is what ruined the movie for me. She is the worst Lois Lane ever, not to mention her character I dont think would have been so cold to Superman.
she's fit though xD
This scene still bothers me.... Seeing Supe's get beat makes me super uncomfortable. No pun intended.
Same here! I hate this scene so much! It always bugs to this very day. Superman getting beaten by mere men, it's f***ing embarrassing.
Monster Master Gojira I agree I hate seeing Superman getting his arse kicked in this movie.

I was never really a fan of Superman but this scene made me cry as a kid
Now this is Lex Luthor!! Jesse was ok he should have been a different character. I love this movie version of Lex.
It was definitely far more intense. I really enjoyed Man of Steel, but in Superman Returns he isn't just bruised or beaten. He's rendered powerless, kicked while he's down and STABBED WITH A KRYPTONITE SHIV. That's just plain BRUTAL.
It would be more brutal if Doomsday was in the movie if done right.
This is hard to watch first he gets beat up then he gets stabbed with kryptonite and pushed off a cliff.
This scene made me feel more emotion than anything that happened in Man of Steel.
And Batman v Superman

Now for those people who think superman does not fight he tried fighting back against lex luthor by grabing his foot but his men were there with him and he was also surrounded by kryptonite and after he grabed his foot his men started to beat the shit outta superman while he was powerless to fight back
Wolverine would torn off that guys fingers before cutting off his arm then brutally killing everyone last one of those guys that's why I like wolverine better because he doesn't care at all if there human pissing Logan off is the last thing you ever do
@@gamingwithcrash209 WOLVERINE IS 1000 TIMES BETTER THAN BOTH BATMAN AND SUPERMAN

I wish Brandon Routh was cast as Superman in the new Man of Steel coming out soon!! I love Brandon! He is such an awesome actor, and honestly he has the perfect characteristics for Superman.

The beating was so brutal and pure humiliation for the once mighty Superman. I was crying watching this scene.
I think this is a really good movie, superman is known for this kindness and humility. he portrays him well..
People love to hate this movie, but this is just pure fucking excellence.
This movie was meant to be more of a dramatic story of Superman re-establishing himself on a world he left for five years and the inner struggle he endured to find a place he felt he was needed. Although I don't think they found the appropriate actor to play Superman, the story was incredible.
This Lex, and Smallville's, are the best Lex Luthors. Jessie Eisenberg is gonna blow it big time.
Kevin was good gene Hackman better
except for the fact that his plan was doomed to failure and was completely stupid because he was about to comment genocide of half the us wiping his money making plan, he did not have weapons of a large scale enough to take down any army and he had no way to make food because it takes years to crate a habitable landform
yeah he was an idoit
Gene was great, Micheal was great, kevin was pathetic (still a great actor) jesse are going to be a total fail
Kevin Spacey was great as Lex. Better writing could have worked, but he was great regardless.
I really like that it’s better than seeing Superman get his ass kicked
0:09 Krrryptonite
by far the best lex luthor. While Eisenberg has a playful madness in him, this luthor is just so menacing and cruel. You believe his hatred for superman, while Luthor in man in steel is almost like a bully from high school.
This just goes to show, Without his powers, Superman is weak
+SkudKapp'd Productions Kryptonite is like poison to Superman - prolonged exposure to a small amount would kill him - and he's literally on an island made of it. The fact that he's not dead from the beating or the fall shows how strong he really is, imo.
+Cal Jones that is true. it's like a human getting beaten up in a nuclear reactor
Kryptonite does not remove his powers. It is more like having polio or a rapidly spreading cancer.
You wanna know the saddest part about this? Superman would still save any of those men who beat him up if they were in danger.
Yet he's responsible for their deaths in the very next scene.

Maybe")
2) making him doubt himself so that he might never use his powers in public to help people.
3) Let him feel guilt for years and years for letting his father die.
(Also the scene with the dog was beyond predictable and corny. The guy behind at the theater couldn't even supress a chuckle at this moment)

This movie was made long before Arrow. So if it is a reference Arrow was referencing Superman Returns.
I'M STILL SUPERMAN!
I kind of want this Lex Luthor vs Henry Cavill's Superman. I mean look at this flourish! How great would this be against a Superman that was actually defiant and trying to fight back?
How about Henry Cavill vs Bryan Cranston while Jesse Eisenberg as to son support him
Had DCEU Superman been there he woulda just Incinerated the thugs with heat vision
And Superman Returns.
agree man, this is a HOT scene
I used to think that 'Man of Steel' was the superior Superman film over this for the longest time. But, I soon remembered seeing 'Superman Returns' in IMAX at 8 years old. The feeling was magical. I grew up watching Christopher Reeves (The Superman) and everything from the opening credits, the John Williams theme and even Routh's spot on impersonation of Reeves made feel excited and giddy. MOS and B v S are just action-packed, CGI, popcorn movies. Not that that's a problem but, it kind of is.
Shut up you have shit boring taste Man Of Steel is still a superior movie over this turd
wow. classy.
I cry when I watch this! :(
Definitely a very sad and heartbreaking scene 😢😭💔
@@bludluva totally agree with you.
He's literally on an island made of krytonite. Just a shard of it can bring him to his knees after a while. His whole body must be crippled with pain. I'm surprised he was able to even stand when he first got there.
Everyone: Oh no, Superman! So sad!
Me: Damn this scene is hot!
Do you like to see Superman being humiliated this way??
same lol
Why this is hot?
It was hot 😅
@@sebastianramirez8288I do
I believe lex did this for himself and on behalf of all criminals that Superman has imprisoned, this was injustice to Superman, but justice for lex
"Krrrrryptoniteee!"
1:46 He became the man that break the balls of steel.
Jealous ha
*****
I guess I have to mildly accept him as the new Lex Luthor, doesn't mean I have to like it, but there are other things to Troll about with Superman then him lol
Spinky After all the bad things we said about Eisenberg being casted as Lex Luthor, if he delivers an excellent performance he'll probably become a legendary actor.
Spinky Have you seen the newest trailer? I think Eisenberg is going to be amazing!
Great Scene
0:10 Nostalgia Critic bought me here
same LMAO thanks for the timestamp
