Being a Newfoundlander, and one that has visited the battle fields of northern France, Beaumont Hamel is a true testament to sacrifice. Yet it wasn't the only place where those brave souls gave the ultimate. This video is amazing and brings together the full story of a proud province and former country. Amen

Dr Sarah Lockyer, Casualty Identification Coordinator for Canada’s Department of National Defence explained that at Confederation Canada took responsibility for Newfoundland's armed forces past, present and future. As such our "boy" was brought home to Canada and lay under the Maple Leaf. As a descendant of two unknown soldiers I'm ok with that now.
I have been to Beaumont Hamel not from newfoundland but my Grandfather was and I take time the Moring of the July1st to stop and think of them who fell that day and thank them! Lest We Forget!
Just as I thought long time recognized ,my grandson mentioned this to me and 14 of age and was surprised he brought this up

With regards to identifying remains, has there been any thoughts about creating online DNA accounts for them? That way as family’s upload samples, they might be able to match with them.
It was an honour to stand on those fields and read the names of these heroes. Never forget what so many young men sacrificed.

@jamesbilodeau8188 Since everyday before 1949, including then the two world wars. Which is the point. Newfoundland fought in those wars pre confederation. The entire piece is to get the rest of the country to recognize that while NL'ers have grown to be proud Canadians, the date July 1st already had pre significance in NL.
When talking about "Germans on Canadian soil" the boats were in NL waters and the wars were both before 1949.

Canada Day in Newfoundland is a testament of our resilience. We sacredly morn the fallen and commemorate this battle in the morning. The traditional BBQ with friends later is our Irish heritage coming through... yes we're celebrating, but we're also having an Irish wake for the fallen.

For WWI?
We have a small military there is no point in conscription anyway. We’re meant to be operating as support for our allies, peacekeeping and humanitarian work the CAF just isn’t made to fight its own wars because of how Canada views its military.
Besides, the CAF is bleeding members right now and suffering from a recruiting crisis but it isn’t in a war, it has no reason to draft folks in.

The LEAST Canada coulda done was to have todays ceremony ON March 31st (Newfoundlanders ACTUAL/official joining Canada date).....but no, because it officially is done ON July 1st, a 'Canadian' holiday, the Newfoundlanders have to endure the "fake'n'phony" langauge through paultry translations.
This doesn't commemorate Newfoundland joining Canada. It commemorates the date it happened. This happens every year in Newfoundland. This is not a one off from Canada showing thanks. It's a holiday in Newfoundland before Canada day.
