Growing, Harvesting and Storing a Year's Worth of Food in Cold Cellar Under a Log Cabin

- Winter's coming and I've been focusing on harvesting, preserving and storing a year's supply of food in my cold storage under my log cabin, including a freezer full of meat and shelves full of root vegetables, squash, pickles, freeze dried meals and more. This week, I harvest the last of the garden, build a door for the cellar and build heavy shelves to store the pails of grains, corn, pasta, milk, rice, MREs and freeze dried vegetables and fruit.

Having been an avid watcher of this channel since the beginning one thing is clear…. You are a dedicated husband and father who takes his role very seriously. You know, no matter what you put out on your videos some people will try to corrupt them and put their own spin on it. Normally with a bunch of false info and or downright lies. I hope you just keep on doing what you are doing and as far as the sorry assed people trying to drag you down, they can take long road to no where an stick it where the Sun don't shine. As a subscriber from the start, all I can say is you are absolutely right, let them say what they want because me and the rest of your loyal viewers know better. Love ya, and keep on keeping on.
My grandparents had cold root celllar storage under the lean-to room (wood stove provided heat for entire drafty living conditions upstairs) while homesteading in a 1 bedroom trailer (1960) in Willow, Alaska. No hot water & only cold running water inside during non-freezing months. Of course, the outhouse was a necessity -it didn't take long to "do your business" in cold weather.
I spent much of my summer childhoods (I am now 72 years young!) with them catching & canning salmon & eating moose. Of course, Gma baked all bread, etc.

Willow is a beautiful place. I lived in Eagle River for 8 years, then Anchorage for another 16 years. I drove nearly everywhere you could drive. I loved the drive to Valdez, and Homer too. Fairbanks was fun, the University museum was cool. Nice memories of your grand parents!

Your core-audience loves the content that you show us regularly and don't care much/at all about other channels commenting on your channel. We all follow you for quite a while and we know you well enough to not wasting our time letting us distract/influence from this rubbish and you might wish doing the same !! Your last cabin was very successful, which I Veiw, occasionally by revisiting on this channel.. Your last cabin was an inspiration to show what could be done with hard work. At this time. I recall that you said that you had a business before which failed due to the economic slump.. you should be very proud of what you have achieved in the past six years from the very early stages of me viewing your channel I don’t know if you recall I had a broken back and each day I looked in on your live coverage. It was a great comfort to me in on a man who had to make a new start that in someway gave me encouragement for myself to get better, I am now back on my feet . And yourself, you are back on your feet, working out in the forest each day, pushing forward positively and providing a new home for you and your wife. Your latest venture is a great improvement in how you can live off grid I find this channel, most rewarding and inspiring. We’re not so long back. Your first video of this new build was just a field. You should sound proud of what you have achieved in the last six years. The person or persons Who cast vindictive comments about you about your wife and your two girls and family they should be ashamed of themselves as they are lowlife, moronic idiots and have nothing better to do than cast comment and slanders comment about you and your family. These people are the lowest of the low, and you should take that comment with a pinch of salt and forget their vindictive hurtful comments, the reason why they make comment upon your way of life and your successful channel, is because they are jealous of your success. Great video as always. I was glad you addressed those bogus videos about you. I saw them and ignored them also and a slow day I checked one out, I turned that off pretty quickly. I know BS when I see it, wish I would have reported it looking back now though. I don't know if TH-cam can keep up with the reported videos now, there are so many that should be reported, and some unknowing people likely report videos that shouldn't be singled out just out of spite for their own unknown reasons. I enjoy watching you hard work and planning, I used to do quite a bit of it myself. Always looking forward to seeing your next video.

There will always be people out there making crap up about others trying to get views for their channel and those that love gossip. One reason for anyone to depart society and live like Shawn is people. People are the reason I love my dog so much. Keep it simple Shawn. You have a great life, wife, daughter, and of course there's Callie. While there are some good people in the world, humanity itself is in a downward spiral. Shawn, show me one person that hasn't made mistake in their lives and I am one of them. Only people that do anything in their lives can make mistakes. I had a good going business in Florida. Once my husband died and I had to trust someone to help run it, I was run into almost bankrupsy, I had a way to bypass that but still I was left without money. Thanks to my sons I was able to work my way out of that hard time. Also Shawn, you don't need to explain any of your personal life to anybody, people belive what they want to anyway. I admire you for what you are doing, The only thing that counts is that you are happy.

In a marriage things change with time... And your path is not necessarily her path anymore.

My brother and I ( in our 60's now) always loved the outdoors, fishing and hunting. We lived in Canada for 7 years, and have much respect for folks who actually can do this life style. For us both it's a dream come true.

I have been learned that a good way to store your potatoes is to dig a pit so deep that when you have filled it with potatoes nothing goes over the lowest point of your cellar floor. That will keep them fresh for a long time.

I have been following you for years and think that you are a fantastic, creative, enterprising man with exceptionally many qualities. If videos are made where shameless lies are made, something needs to be done about it. Because everything you share with us is wonderful. The nature shots, the qualities of your buildings that are built by hand. I have a huge appreciation for what you show us. I'm not a patreon because I can't afford to be. Otherwise it would have been me. Let your family know that they should only watch your videos and not the videos that tell lies about you and your family. And don't share anything you want to keep private. It is you who has to share what you want to share. And please continue with your fantastic projects and recordings in nature.

Use 1/4" hardware clothe under the wood flooring. Mice can't get through it. Use it over the insulation before putting up the wood "walls" = no mice! Always lots of work to get ready for winter. We still have more to do but it has rained every day and some of it was coming down hard. Crazy weather this whole year. Thanks for sharing. God bless and protect.

Dear Shawn James I fallow you since 22/04/2013 and I like to see your skills on agriculture, construction and your explanation about few and simple things.
You don’t have to explain nothing about your personal family you show us one hour a week of your life in forest and I think is sufficient, this is my opinion.
The others that say meaningless words about your life don't listen to them
I am from Europe I live in Portugal and to me is funny because we do not have such a climate like that with winter full of snow.
I leave in a country of sunshine. So it is a pleasure to see how you do to survive in that condition.
You must work and collect in summer to live in winter.
So you are organized and there are things you have to do if not is gone and winter is coming.

I think its a position of strength to admit to having been through hardships and come out the other side. Some people have small hardships, others have great hardships, but each can be a mountain to the person going through it. It goes much more easily when you have a listening ear or someone who can give a few tips or a helping hand. The worst someone can do is say either "I know how you feel" or "I envy you". Both are lies. No-one needs that. I enjoy watching this chanel because Shawn is doing what I used to do but can no longer do, but with a nicer house.
Most if not all of my hero's are dead. I am proud to say, at least we still have you, truly an inspiration. Thank you!
