Installing a New Wood Cook Stove in my Off Grid Log Cabin

- The wood stove I've been using for the past two years has functioned well as a source of heat, but it was less than ideal for cooking. This week, I remove it and install a LaNordica Rosa L cookstove, complete with an oven and removable rings for stove top cooking. To test out the oven, I bake a loaf of bread, which turned out perfectly in the easy to control oven where I kept the temperature at 450F for the full 45 minutes of baking time.
Check out my other channel to see the installation in a little more detail with explanations, and visit my Patreon channel to hear what's going on in my life the other 167 hours per week.

What a wonderful addition to the cabin. Fresh baked bread is awesome.
You bet ya!
Cali coming in hearing the oven door close is perfect. Reminds me of my mom's old dog. Pawed at the door whenever she'd open the oven.
My heart ❤😢is crying,I love the old very good Stove,he have good Stones inside, which keep the heat it very good and is also very easy to Clean,no way will get me a new one solong it not broke down!
Absolutely one of the best smells in the world is homemade baked bread!
Congrats on the cooking stove upgrade
Oh my God! I live near the factory of nordica in Veneto Italy. thats crazy seeing this at the cabin!
I like how you show how you sometimes do things with just the natural light to illuminate your way. It helps people see the reality of living without light switches to willy nilly flip on everywhere. I think even for those of us who will always remain in town, it makes us more thankful for all the conveniences we take for granted.
Shawn, that is like saying goodby to an old friend. You built the cabin around that stove!
:)
What are you going to do with that stove?@@MySelfReliance
@@hithere7382how about sending it back to China where it belongs?
He built his city
He built his city
Around that stove!
I was thinking the same thing. Kinda sad.
It looked to be a difficult job to swap out those two stoves. The new stove is quite an improvement.
A good stove from Italy. Hi from Dolomites.👍
I was just there this past summer as part of a 5 country Alps tour@@derov4132

@@derov4132Ciao.
Thanks Shawn for letting me vicariously live out my dream through your wonderfully created world. It blesses my spirit to watch your channel.
Hi Shawn, quick tip for you when using baking paper to line a bowl. If you quickly scrunch it up into a ball, open it, and scrunch it up again, it will then conform to any shape you put it in. So it will fit right in that bowl without popping out.
Great video. Enjoy your new cook stove.
Thanks for the tip!!
This is true. An old trick my nana taught me ❤
Oh boy! It's taken me sixty years to learn this clever tip.
Thanks!!!
I could have used this tip 2 hrs ago. I used binder clips to hold it in place, LOL.
Hey that's no fair you leave us hanging and we didn't get to see you cut into the bread!! LOL 😂 LOL. THAT NEW STOVE IS BEAUTIFUL!! Thank you for sharing all your videos with us. You are quite an awesome man, and your wife is very lucky to have you. Your cabin looks so warm and cozy.
There are so many times when I watch this channel and think, "This man needs a hand truck." This is definitely one of those.
Or at the very least sliders!
There was a hand truck in the cabin. I don’t know why he didn’t use it (on camera)!
Bull headed determination.
There’s an old saying “ strong in arm, thick in head!” 🤔😆
@@warrenstanford7240 Funny saying, but I wouldn't apply it to Shawn. Watching him build that cabin by himself is a masterclass in self-reliance. Moving the stove by hand stands out because he's never been shy about using levers and pulleys.
A LaNordica wood stove has been on my wish list for a while. So nice to see them in action.
They are wonderful.
On. MY bucket list as well. Saving for it as we speak!
Now I see why you hadn't greased those hinges on the wood stove, new wood stove in the works. Yep, freshly baked bread rocks!
Thank you for all the fireside peace you extend to your viewers. Love the dog.
What an awesome home you have made this time!! Especially making things easier for your lovely lady!😊 give Cali a hug from Indiana please!❤
Well done! I so wish that I could live more rurally in a small cabin and be more self sustaining. I miss living in a home with a wood cook stove! Brilliant installation and removal of the other! Nice meals and yes, there’s nothing like freshly baked bread! Well done! Beautiful home!😎😎😎Thank you! 🙏❤️🩹🕊️✝️✡️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Food always tastes better cooked on a wood stove. Grew up living with my grandfather. We heated and cook on a wood fired stove back in the 50's.
The new stove is nice, the cabin is essentially completed and now you're living in the comfort you created. I think one of the best parts of your videos is watching you cook healthy and delicious food, I love vegetables and egg together and fresh baked bread is the nectar of the Gods! Great video Shawn, I hope to see you have a fun and relaxing winter, you deserve it.
Hey Shawn if you get yourself an old broom handle and cut it in half. Lay underneath your pallet or whatever you're moving, makes it a lot easier to move around and won't damage flooring. Great looking cookstove. Nothing like the smell of bread baking. I foresee some excellent pizza in your future.
Truly you are jack of all trades. You can build a cabin with your own hands, and make the most beautiful loaf of bread ever. You are blessed with many talents Sean.
I've just recently discovered your channel and am enjoying your excellent woodworking. Your other half is a very lucky lady😊
As a woman without a lot of strength, here's how I move big heavy things in the house. Rug, towel,or blanket underneath to reduce friction. A good stout flat strap is very helpful to lever things around too.
Better yet get two of your strapping menfolk to move the item. 🤔👍
A box for hot water attached to the oven would be handy. It contains enough water for a quick shower.
Also maintains some heat as a "heat battery" as a bonus.
And add some much needed humidity during the dry winter months. 🙂
Ovens and home made bread. Nothing better , how perfect 😍
Thank you for letting us share your cabin life vicariously! 😊Callie is precious!
Nice addition to the cabin. That will expand your menu. The smell of bread baking will certainly add a homie aspect to the cabin. I will be curious to hear how you like this wood cook stove. It seems to be a popular style. Enjoy it.
What a cute little wood stove. My MIL cooked on a wood stove until the mid-late 60's but her's was at least twice as big. It was huge!
SHAWN & OUR CALI !!! You got a oven there also HIGH FIVE TO YOU !!! That is grand looking !!! Oh Shawn that is how you tell when bread is finished with the thump on it !!! I used to do that a lot with my bread or buns at home up North !!! HEAVEN has the smells of firewood cooking stoves fresh baked bread & DEER ONES Cooking in the ovens the roasts you will be making now !!! Thank you for serving our country !!!
An oven! And bread!
One thing I won’t miss is that knocking noise coming from the old stove.
How you shift these heavy objects is incredible.
It looks nice and cozy inside. 👍 quite the process moving the stoves. Wow, I thought I spotted the white stuff falling. We’ve had a taste of it, mostly melted now. It’s letting us know it’ll be here soon to stay, a very nice new stove. Good job, well done. Bread baking is one of the best smells❤️👍. Fresh baked bread is one of my favorites.
I marvel at your individual ingenuity and am GRATEFUL you haven't injured yourself. Still loving your channel content all these years. Thank you for sharing it and giving us all something to look forward to at the end of every week.
Very solid looking stove. You will love that oven as you have already learned. Next thing we know, you will be baking cakes and cookies! I grew up with a wood cook stove on our farm in Kentucky in the 50's. It was a bit bigger than this, had a warming oven above the cooking surface where one could usually find something to snack on and a reservoir on the side which the kids were responsible for filling every night.
Mr. Shawn I appreciate you taking the time to share what you’re doing, I always learn something from your videos!
Baking bread, frying bacon, coffee perking, and a hickory wood fire are wonderful fragrances Shawn!
Great to see that You and Cali doing well up there in your cabin and glad
to see you put in your wood stove
have a great weekend Thanks.🎄🎄

Is that fire box smaller? Hope you don't have to keep getting up to add wood. My father said back in the day, if your wood stove just can't heat your cabin, put rocks on the cooking surface. The rocks will add more heat. Thats what they did in Sweden. Love the oven.
Reminds me of my grandmother's old electric stove. It has a separate compartment that they used to toast bread.
Love the new stove looks more like what you and your Wife can at the same time. God bless.
This episode reminded me of when my Mom would make homemade rolls and tell us we couldn't run in the kitchen out the back door while they were settling back in the 70's. Those rolls were so good I wish I knew how to make them; it was a receipt she was taught by my grandmother. Likely similar only smallish balls of dough placed in the pan in a grid pattern, four across in the standard sized pan, put a little butter on those and you knew what bread was meant to taste like! Already watch the Shawn James episode so I'll leave this one to the cook stove side of things. Looks like a great choice.
Wow! Cool to see those slidy things work in real life! Have always been skeptical as to whether or not they work, but skeptical no more. Nice new stove, by the way 😊
I popped in to visit my 98 lb, tiny elf of a mother one day. She was moving a full wall of shelves and entertainment unit from one room to another BY HERSELF with those sliders.
Yes…they work, lol.
But! Be sure the floor is clean…no sand or grit. They can get ruined, but also, the grit can become embedded, which will scratch a floor.
Shawn this might be the best episode ever. The new stove is outstanding,
Excellent choice of the stove for the cabin. In 1967 I went up to Thompson Michigan with my grandparents the man that had the cabin it was name Stahl cook breakfast on the stove, which was Wood, fired, bacon and eggs, and all the rest, but it was a similar stove to what you are cooking on now, I can still taste it. I just love for a long time your TH-cam channel I watch. Emily is also love her channel. This was exciting because it reminded me of breakfast morning in Thompson Michigan. Very good choice on the stove. Wish I could be there.
Excellent choice, those kind of stoves are the best for off grid living.
Cali outside in the first clip made my hand instincively move to open a door and let her in. What a sweet girl, the best.
lol. I let mine to. So funny.
New stove is a game changer when it comes to preparing all types of bread and food, great choice of stove
I must say that you're an intuitive man Sean, you instinctively know that your viewers do in fact want to see every single thing you put together especially the new oven. It really does help to see just how things are done properly. Kudos and thank you mate from a beach in SE Asia 😌 🙏 😎
Nice stove! This is the first time I’ve seen someone actually us stovepipes and chimney instead of single wall pipes. With a stove like that you can season your cast iron all the time. I like it.
looks like Calie is slowing down a bit ❤
Shawn use oil on the bench instead of flour, it keeps the floor cleaner and stops criters comming in .
It's also better for the wood.
Flour dries out the wood and makes it splinter.
I was a Baker for 25yr.
I know these things.
you only need a little bit.
Mike.
@@sidb37I think he means it's better to keep the workung surface oiled, to keep it smooth and stop the dough from sticking; rather than dusting it liberally with flour, some of which could fall to the floor and attract ants.
Yes Cali we see you have made yourself a new outdoor cave under the porch, where you can keep an eye on whatever other lifestock is going about, hide from Dad when he is looking for you and at the same time stay fairly warm. I have not seen anything from Emily of late Shawn, so presume she is okay and no set backs from her concussion episode?
This content is pure dream. "These heavenly smells..."
It's really heaven, I just love this two partners
What an awesome amazing Stove that's perfect for all your needs plus it's efficiency is priceless ❤
I almost had the same oven in the place I lived before and I loved it and still miss it. I never had better chicken wings and other crispy stuff. Also cooking on wood is something very special. My stove model had what we call a “water ship,” a kind of bain marie, a pot integrated into the side of the stove with a connection to the water pipe. This means you always have several liters of hot water available. Another addition is the water pocket, also with a connection to the water pipe. A closed system with internal hot water also integrated into the stove. A type of boiler with a water pump that allows one or two radiators to be connected in the adjacent rooms.
What a cool cook stove! Bread success!
After years of watching your videos I still look forward to the next one!!
Hey Shawn, if you crumple up the baking paper first, then open it out, it is easier to manipulate into your bowl or dish 😁
I love these kind of videos ,with you and Cali , ( family And Friends) doing stuff in & and around the cabin.. Your cooking too!
My grandfather had a wood cook stove. We had Sunday dinner cooked on it. The cook stove was in a separate room from the modern kitchen.
I've been following this channel from Australia for a few years.
Never gets stale.
I also like baking bread too 😇
Your bread looked heavenly!😊
Like your new wood stove. I used to bake bread a lot years ago but haven't done it for a while. You have inspired me to do it again. Thanks.
Hello what a great way to start the weekend
Shaun’s cabin is Beautifully built my himself with his bare hands awesome
Love love love It!!!!!
I’ll buy a cabin he built any day
Thanks for sharing Shaun
You’re the best beyond n Above all measures!!!!!
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Love the new stove 😊
The place inside is beautiful!!!!
Everything Shaun cooks is mouthwatering 👍🏾🥰
All the wood stoves I had up to 20 years ago always had a damper in the stove pipe. It made controlling the heat a lot easier. Especially the cook stoves. 😊 It kept the heat in rather than just blowing outside.
I remember when the other stove out in the elements as you built the cabin… this one is going to live a much softer life 😂🎉🎉🎉
Congratulations and enjoy!
The little deer in the window looks so magestic with the light shining behind it.
I’m glad it has glass front. Best part of ambience
Great looking stove!
And Very Expensive!!
That new Italian stove looks amazing! Congrats!
Beautiful stove. Looks super high end and efficient. Thanks Shawn
I have a single family residence in urban Seattle, and installed a conventional wood heating stove in 1987. I have a gas furnace, range and water heater, but during the winter I almost exclusively heat water and heat the house with the wood stove, using scrap wood available for the labor of getting it from nearby industrial outfits, such as a lumber yard.
I do quite a bit of cooking on and in the wood stove. When temperatures are moderate, I don't stoke up the stove a lot, and do more cooking in the stove, right on the coals, usually with the stove door closed.
Using cast iron makes that quite practical, but with some care I find that even plastic handles on frying pans and such are heat resistant enough to avoid damage if you avoid exposing them to direct flames.
During the coldest part of the winter, I need to stoke up the wood stove to get maximum heat from it. I would suppose that would be a major limitation on your wood cook stove ---- it has plenty of space for cooking, but it looks like limited space for burning wood for maximum heat.
I've considered replacing my stove with a wood cook stove, but the heating capability of the stove is a lot more important than the greater food cooking ability and capacity. I can always use my gas range if desired, but I prefer to avoid switching on the gas furnace.
And during the summer, a wood cook stove is going to get the house hot! That was perhaps the biggest advantage of gas or electric ranges over coal or wood cook stoves, I would imagine.
So I've rejected the idea of replacing my heating stove with a cook stove.
I will look forward to hearing about your adventures of cooking on your wood cook stove! I find that space heating, water heating and cooking own my wood stove is an enjoyable adventure for me, and I look forward to hearing how things work out for you.
Perhaps you will convert me?!
Darn nice stove, but I liked the other one as much. You’ve come a long way my friend and you have a knack for tackling whatever you put your mind to. Keep up the great work!
You have chosen an Italian stove! Ciao Shawn, you are always the best! 💪
You will love it! We looked at the Nordica stoves a lot but decided to go with the Regina cookstove. It’s super versatile and heats our house wonderfully. Congrats!
I started watching years ago with a few thousand subs, I told everyone I knew to subscribe guess that's how it happens, now 2.13 million subs never could have hoped for this much success for him soooo Happy. great stove and really like the buck on the window sill
Corn meal works great too at the bottom of a Dutch oven. It keeps the bottom of the loaf from burning and the loaf slides right out.
your channel just happened to come up on my youtube of things to watch and im hooked. seen a bit of canada but not that big beautiful untouched wildnerness out there its interesting to see the day to day of living off grid in this beautiful cabin you built and that new stove is fantastic. you look to be a good cook as well.. and your dog is so sweet-great companionship out there. i too like some solitude as well and i can understand wanting to live out there and no electric bils or mortgage and the usual stuff we deal with. your soul must be content out there and happy.
Awesome cook stove Shawn... Fruits(bread) of your labor!
The only thing that video was lacking was a shot of you slicing a couple pieces of fresh baked bread, and slathering some butter on them!! Yummy!!!
Fresh bread. Yummy! Love the stove ❤
I love life in this beautiful and wonderful way
Coincidence! I just baked a bread myself today! Thanks for filming Shawn. 😁👍🏼😁👍🏼
What a coincidence, I just ate a slice of bread.
Enjoy new stove. Bread looked delicious
Great videos!!! I love your stove. I just purchased mine from Lehman’s. Congrats 🎉🍾 I can’t wait to live in my log cabin. I’ve learned a lot from your videos , and I get enjoyment watching you and Callie!!!! She’s adorable. I love her patience. When I visit Canada I would love to meet you and your family.!!!!!! God bless you.
I think you are using parchment paper. A trick I learned a long time ago is wad it up really good, straighten it out and wad it up again then it is so much easier to conform to the shape you need it. Love the new stove!
Nothing is ever easy with you is it? If it wasn’t really difficult I think you’d just skip it. My God you’re a tough bugger. But I wouldn’t miss an episode. So much respect and admiration 🇨🇦🤗😉
You make me hungry and envious. God bless you
What a beautiful cabin, and a beautiful area!
When moving something like this some short pieces of 1” pipe for rollers can really be a huge amount of help
I was wondering why a new stove, but seeing the side oven addition for baking and the pull out cinder tray will be a great addition for cleaning.

Watching you struggle with all that heavy stuff makes me happy I have that Nice Dolly stuffed away in my Garage. Turns out that its used more than you can expect.
Beautiful stove Shawn, but I said that about the one that moved out. You'll get much enjoyment with the oven. Bread, cookies, muffins and Christmas turkey. Have fun, the hard work last year is paying off!!!
We all just love Cali! What a sweet, beautiful, fortunate doggie…to live this life…man…♥️
Awesome video, that cook stove is so cool! How well will it heat the cabin in the winter, compared to the wood stove larger fire box?
That was my thoughts as well..and why I would consider installing the old stove elsewhere in the cabin as a second source of heat...
Great upgrade on the stove, sorry to not have been leaving any comments. But, I had been dealing with severe chronic nerve pain in one of my legs. From 26 operations and procedures, that were to help walk again. But instead each one made it worse, and I had to go through the process of deciding to have my leg amputated above the knee. I order to get rid of the pain and to walk again with a prosthetic leg. But now I can’t wait for the 29th of this month to have it done!
nice stove and bread looks beautiful.
Firebox half the size? Hope you get the same heat output at -40, totally understand why you made the switch for cooking but I wouldn't get rid of the woodstove until you used the LaNordica for a season. I would have both.
Yes! My La Nordica is the PITTS! I used it for just over two years and was cleaning it two months ago and noticed the boiler has a hole! Discovered it was no longer under warranty but there is ‘0’ customers service anyway. It was a huge financial investment and my only source of heat here in cold wet NW Europe. I couldn’t get it hot enough for baking bread (due to boiler I guess). Ok for warming stuff. I DON’T recommend La Nordica products. Peace🙏
This stove can heat up to 1400-1900 sq feet. My home is 1900 and it gets toasty. I cook and bake on it exclusively all winter. Its a great stove. I cant speak for other lanordica stoves but this one is a gem!
Mmmmm...fresh bread is like nothing else. Wish we had smell-ernet!
You're moving up in your off grid cabin Shawn. Those types of stoves really kick out the heat but they're a pain to move around and your first meal on a new cook stove. 👍
That loaf of bread looked absolutely scrumptious.
I love this stove. Very good taste Mr James.❤
