WTF Happened to FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA?

  • In our latest WTF series, we take a look at some of our favorite stars and filmmakers who have seemingly disappeared or altered their careers over the years to the point that begs the question; WTF happened? Now, before you think we're just picking on celebrities or running some gossip rag stuff, think again! We take a fun (and sometimes funny), researched and fair approach, looking at all angles that led our subject to wherever they are now (which isn't necessarily a bad place at all). If anything, it answers the question on where these fine folks went, how they got there and where you can find 'em now.
In this episode, we look at legendary director Francis Ford Coppola, who gifted us with such cinematic gems as The Godfather Trilogy, Apocalypse Now, The Conversation, The Outsiders and Bram Stoker's Dracula, before pulling a near disappearing act in the later part of his career, dipping in to direct vastly different films, such as Jack with Robin Williams, an adaptation of John Grisham's The Rainmaker and then some truly odd, underwhelming flicks like Youth Without Youth and Twixt. Coppola has also worked heavily as a producer and even has his own wine, which you can pick up at most liquor stores, but his absence from greatness on the big screen has left us wondering WTF Happened to Francis Ford Coppola?

He's made a lot of truly great movies but it's obvious that his passion and energy put into movies now isn't what he did in the 70s. And honestly that's fine, he's earned the right to do whatever he wants to do at this point. Just for making Converstion, Godfather movies, Apocalypse Now, The Outsiders and writing Patton he's a moviemkaing Hall of Famer.

When you create Apocalypse Now and the Godfather movies, there is nowhere to go but downhill. Coppola reached the apex of film-making -- celebrate the gems he left us. If Michelangelo wanted to make clay bowls after painting the Sistine Chapel, that in no way negated his previous accomplishments. Even Einstein burned out working on his theories. The light that shines twice as bright burns half as long. If only any of us had the same spark of brilliance as these luminaries.

The answer is very simple: he's interested in cinema, not movies. He's trying new things. And I'm on it. As much as I love Scorsese and Spielberg, I can see Coppola shaking his head with The Irishman and West Side Story's remake, like saying: "dudes, we know already you can do that. Try something different". And I love him for that.

As we grow, we start to catch onto formulas and patterns of Blockbusters - when they become more obvious and repetitive, we get bored or even disappointed if it's ridiculously hyped up. That being said, I love both sides of cinema: there are many occasions where I'll need my popcorn flick fix and others where I want a slow-burning drama, thriller, etc.

Francis seems to make his best work when he’s under immense pressure and literally having the worst possible time during a production. He is definitely one of the greatest film makers of all time. However his outlet for doing so has changed so much over time to where we are now. Studios don’t really make films like he makes or wants to make these days. Which is a real shame.

being a director must be extremely tedious, we the audience just see the finished movie and judge accordingly, but the director is seeing all the behind the scenes stuff, debating costs, and other tedious matters, it can't be much fun, so if they do make one masterpiece in their career, it should be enough, and movies just made for box office moneymaking should be just that, with no regard for artistic input, but making movies must be a nightmare, it's like when you listen to music most of your life, and it's magical, you just listen, and you mind is captivated, emotions are awakened and we don't know why, but as soon as you learn how to play an instrument yourself, and write and make your own music, listening to stuff is never quite the same again, coz you scrutinise and judge from a musicians' perspective, the magic is gone, so I can't imagine what it's like making an epic movie, seeing all the wheels in motion, all to reach the end and finally see the premiere on a cinema screen, but you still know all the bits behind the scenes in your memory, only us first time viewers who don't direct can confirm that the movie is an epic treat to watch, so we shouldn't be too harsh on directors who make bad movies, but only as long as they did manage to produce a gem or a masterpiece, and Apocalypse Now really is a masterpiece, still stands up today, and can be watched over and over too, not in the least bit cheesy.

I make short movies of my own with budget and no budget. I work on production before and have experience behind the scene. What you are saying is correct and while I don’t direct studios movies but I make them my own with my crew and I think my experience of being a director is fun. I think being able to shoot actor and watch them dissappear into their role and as a director it is fun to watch and I love writing and editing film because it give me so much energy creating an art form that I love. Movies is frustrating if you only doing it for money but not for me because I feel it with passion so I truly enjoy everything about making movies and love working with people around me every day.
The thing I like to make is indie art film mostly that with a tighter budget and the thing you are talking about are people like Coppola who are working under pressure because he’s creating a massive movie like apocalypse now which will take a lot of time , schedule and money since it’s a big movie. I don’t make film to that extend so the experience feel less stressful since I’m not trying to craft such a massive movie like that on location with thousand of actor and prop and set pieces which would be hell to direct but I respect people who do that of course

Actually, Dracula was a very big movie when it was released. It was advertised everywhere, and from what I recall, it was a box office success. Most audiences loved it, although it was critically mixed. FFC's use of period tech at that time was decades ahead of current filmmakers trying to do the same thing. We see movies like The Lighthouse, shot on all period lenses and in B&W. Dracula was a piece of art, with a powerhouse performance by Oldman.

Apocalypse Now: Redux is one of the best films ever made IMHO. And along with that, I can watch Godfather I/II, and Bram Stoker's Dracula again and again without getting bored; but also see something new in them each time I view them. Not many movies I can say that about; and he made 4 of them!

    • @ianmansfield68

@Taylor Lemoine I think Part 3 is ok, definitely the weakest of the 3 and it has it's faults as he says here, but I agree with you it holds it's own. Part 2 is that rare thing IMHO - the sequel that is better than the original; and part 3 shares many of the classic GF set pieces - the family wedding at the start; the shoot-outs that come out of nowhere; the tie-in to real life events (death of the pope). All great stuff and it passes my acid test of movies - would I watch it again? Hell yeah!
LOL - he gets a pass on any shit movies he makes - totally agree! I've never seen Jack but I remember an interview he did once where he justified the Cotton Club by saying the budget had already been blown when they hired him so his hands were tied. It's actually a really bloody good movie as it is - can't imagine what it would have been like if he'd had full creative control from day 1! In the same interview he mentioned that the critics had described his flops as the 'among the best quality flops' in terms of artistic/cinematic achievement. Love his self belief.
I really, really hope we get to see 'Megalopolis'.....

Nice video. I had this same question when he came to my film school department at SFSU over a decade ago. I asked him the same question, just more politely. He had just completed Tetro and I liked it. I honestly did not like Godfather 1 but liked part 2. I found him good but not great. From his answer he simply said that he never really wanted to be part of the Hollywood system. He is an artist who wanted to make a living for his family (They are also an intelligent group of well-off artists with high expectations). Most of the epic directors from his era were like that. Some made a bunch of hits and others made only a few. Don't forget that the producers were and are demanding (People always forget about the producers but attack the directors, screenwriters, or actors). Honestly, several filmmakers get stressed and burnt out from making hits. Very common. When he got done with the big projects at his heyday, that made him accomplished, he switched to wine and wanted to make private art projects again (Hence, Tetro). It was during this era when he was not making good films (Jack, Godfather 3, etc.), he was really just kind of trying for the money and to remain relevant for the fans and the work. Don't get me wrong, he still worked well, just not making art with a passion and yet he was still able to get away with it. Think Peter Jackson and King Kong (Good CGI, not great movie making). What I hear from filmmakers in the industry is that when you make one really good film (Or 3-5 in Ford's case), you can kind of do whatever you want. Good movies and art are hard. It is very rare to be successful like he is. The industry is demanding and the audiences are unforgivable. Only a few artists in the world have a perfect record. Even some of our favorite fine artists or musicians make their best work during a set period and then kind of fade or retire.

and other sources. In the last phase of production, "Coppola had offered his car, house, and The Godfather profits as security to finish the film" - Wikipedia. Back when he was young and hungry, he needed his movies to be good so he could make something else, but that isn't the case anymore - and I fear this is what has happened to Spielberg, too. His movies have been lackluster ever since Minority Report. He doesn't have the drive anymore. Lucas lost the drive after Star Wars in 1977, sadly. I think Scorsese still has the drive, but not always. It's going. @@yourstruly4817 it's like these MAGA Americans who long to take America back the 50s. The 50s were not a good time for a large section of Americans. Hell even teen pregnancy was higher back then than it is now. All I'm saying is the past is not always as glamorous as it seems.

I agree with almost everything. There is one problem only: you give "One from the Heart" just a foot note. And I think it's one of Coppolas best films. As well as "Rumble Fish". But I agree with everything else.

For Apocalypse, he said about he's money that it was 29% of the bill!
I don't know how much it cost, but, If you take a 10 million for a great production, it cost an arm!

Well it's probably due to his age. There's always a time where he needs a break and retire after making 4 masterpieces in his career. It's the end of an era for him

There is a "Complete Novel" extended and re-cut version of The Outsiders. It's actually difficult to get the theatrical version now, but I never thought it failed anyway. The Godfather part III does have problems - the absence of Robert Duvall and the appearance of Sofia Coppola - but Duvall wanted too much money and Wynona Ryder never turned up in Rome to shoot. He should have recast her with the numerous great actresses around but he put his daughter in it and it's the worst thing he could have done. It is still a very good film though. I think Coppola peaked too soon (Godfather I&II, Apocalypse Now) and he's been struggling to reach anything like those heights ever since. But he didn't originate those projects; Mario Puzo's book was a massive best-seller and John Milius' script for Apocalypse was one of the most talked about scripts in Hollywood. Now, I think he's making little movies he has complete control over and he likes the ability to experiment within them. And why shouldn't he? He's earned it.

Marvel movies are for children, and man-children. I don't begrudge them enjoying it, but it's hard for me to respect adults who say they enjoy these big budget superhero movies that aren't Deadpool.

Film is an art form. You don’t stop just because your work isn’t accepted en masse. It may never reach the heights it once did, but to stop isn’t in the nature of an Artist.
You Do because you Are. You don’t just stop because your current work isn’t the same as thirty years ago.
