This is an older clip. From when the Niteshift sported only 50hp carb-fed four-strokes. Magnificent little motors that were so extraordinarily economical.
So she only had a few speed settings. And the one employed on this shallow day was full taps. You gotta keep your speed up when traversing shallow sandbanks in the surf zone. Because if you don't, it can be too shallow to get back up on the plane. And you will be mowed down by the next set. Sitting duck with motors in the sand.
The other takeaway from this eventful launch is that by choosing a diagonal angle to the waves, my Dad lost less speed at impact than he would have if he had taken any of those waves head-on. This works best in a catamaran-style boat but also applies to monohulls.
Don't slow down. And use as much diagonal angle as you dare to keep on the plane all the way out.
Here in Port Shepstone (umzimkuluadren...) the sardines have long gone past!
You might still catch one or two lost shoals in the Durban area still.
